I understand he might be under instruction to trust the play call more. I don't think he'll ever be the live to fight another day type of QB. I just don't believe that when the play breaks down he's thinking I'm not supposed to play sandlot ,at that point instinct takes over. If in the back of his mind he has no confidence in the play that's called he's more likely not to try and execute it. He has never been the type to trust where the play is supposed to go. He would rather wait til his man is open than to throw to a spot(timing patterns). This is why he sometimes holds the ball too long. You might not think he lost his gift to evade the rush in one season, but a near punctured aorta may have something to do with it.

Haley was also brought in to reestablish the running game in addition to keeping Ben upright with playcalling that results in him using quicker releases. Last year before his injury he was trying to do that and it was working. Not great but never the less he got sacked less then he will get sacked this year if they don't secure a decent Oline to protect Ben.

The Rooneys really are trying to emphasize a running game but I dont think they meant Ben running around as though his life depended on it. ;)

Until the Oline is fixed we wont see any offense this year either and no creativity nor imagination from Haley. As I have said in other threads Haleys playcalling comes into question because some fans cannot fathom the Oline is the real problem.

It's painfully obvious that the O line is the root of this underwhelming offensive display. I have a hard time believing the lack of ability is the reason. The question is why are they so bad? How do we fix it?

OK, aside from all the serious, sensible, and informative discussion here, I nominate Jim Tressel!...
    LOL...
In no way do I think firing our head coach during the season will improve our chances to get to Lomardi #7...
However, if you just want boring, MISTAKE FREE football, played by men of "high moral character"(well, except for a few that got kicked out, for breaking the rules...)...
    Jim Tressel is your man!
I say this, even knowing that it will remove him from his new post of "Dude in charge of student relations, and fund raising"(or somethin like that), at my hometown University of Akron...
He`s wasting his talents right now, teaching a class called "how to coach", or something very similar to that, and would probably "welcome the challenge" of how to restore the Pittsburgh Steelers to playing fundamentally sound football, and not embarassing their opponents, by running up the score...
Sorry, guys, I am 90% kidding, just because I don`t know a lot of head coaching candidates, in the NFL, or on the fringes...
But other than maybe Getting Ray Horton back, as a head coach, I don`t have a legitamite candidate...
For that reason, I am willing to stick with Tomlin.
I`ve seen worse...(Just not in charge of our team)..
    Seriously, tho,,,
Tressel`s resume, fits in pretty good here... Boring, fundamental football.
    Don`t make mistakes.
Run the clock out, once you get the lead.
Take your chances, rarely, when they have a good chance of paying off...
The rest of the time... just move the ball into the endzone, and stop your opponent from doing the same to you...
Don`t celebrate big plays... etc.. etc.. etc...
    Even keel... etc. etc....
Sounds pretty boring, but, the more I think about it, it led to winning football games, and isn`t that what we all really want, right now/
I would say, "style points" are a luxury we can`t afford right now...
Then again, I think Tomlin sees it the same way.
So why ain`t he getting it done?
No patience.. This is a 16 game season to get to the danse, and we just burned one chance...
A win woulda put us in 1st place in the division...
    OK, enough ranting, sorry.
    GO STEELERS!!!
GET BACK TO BASICS, AND WIN THE EFFIN GAMES!!!:steelflag:

What's funny about that is that when LSH dropped one that he CLEARLY should have caught Ben was VERY visibly irritated and I'm just wondering why he doesn't show that same fire to morons like Foster that just let him get plowed constantly. It's time for Ben to act like Brady and actually call these morons out. SOMEone on this team needs to bring some fire and really get in some grills. Ben would be TOTALLY justified in tearing these guys a new one and I think it would be great for the fans to see it too. I honestly think Ben's patience have in some ways been a detriment to the line. Have you ever seen the video of Manning absolutely RIPPING Jeff Saturday? It's got a ton of foul language because Manning is so mad but as the leader of the offense he felt like he had to call the guy out. Ben needs to really let these guys have it AND his receivers that are dropping catchable balls as well(ie Manny Sanders)!

Because LHS isn't protecting his life :lolol:

Seriously though, if Ben ever threw his guys under the bus like Peyton did to his line, I'd loose a lot of respect for him. One of Bens admirable traits is he always has his teammates back. You also know damn well he'd get shredded by people around here if he ever said something like that public, keep it in house.

Oh I was talking about what he said to him on the sidelines during an argument. Not in a presser or anything like that. Yeah he DID throw them under the bus when we kicked the crap out of them in 05. I really don't care about their feelings though. They are protecting our franchise and poorly and I would rather Ben's career be extended than Foster's feelings be preserved but I wouldn't care where Ben did it as long as he would do it and I think you feel the same way. I personally would like to see it because it would be a vicarious way for me as a fan to let them know what I think of them but I know what you mean. I don't think it would make him a bad teammate though because ultimately it would make the team better if they were held accountable.

You don` think they are "held accountable", in private?!?!
You and I will never know, but I am fairly sure, when the cameras are off them, Ben HAS to say..
"Dammit, I`m tired of singin yer praises, while I am runnin for my life/ gettin planted in the ground"...
    Know what I mean?
It`s way better to do it behind closed doors.. But, I agree, It does need done...
    GO STEELERS!

I would love to know the answer to that. Ben just doesn't seem confrontational to me. I mean he has taken them out to eat and paid before. I would say "where do you guys want to go"? And then they would say some place fancy and then I would say "well we're eating bologna instead because that's all your worth"! NObody wants to just eat bologna! LOL.

And how do you know he doesn`t?
    Cuz they don`t improve?
Nuthin good would come out of callin them out in public...
Maybe Manning, or Brady could get away with it, but then, THEY never "hold onto the bball too long"...
It`s "Never" their fault for getting sacked...
WOuld just lead to division among the ranks, here...
WE keep that kinda crap behind "closed doors"... ;)
    GO STEELERS!

Thanks for pointing this out Mac, before season even started I said there should have been 2 more coaches fired . And old Kirby was one of them, along with the Strength and Conditioning coach.

I'm just curious if it does but wish somebody would light a fire under them. I mean for the last 6 years we've been watching Ben get clobbered. I'm to the point that I would be willing to say that I would rather have kept BA and brought in an o-line specialist and paid him a ridiculous amount of money because I'm THAT sick of not seeing us run the ball and not being able to protect our best qb since before I was born and BA is the bane of my existence. The reason I say it like that is because I figure Haley is making more money than BA was since he was also a head coach before coming here. I wish the Rooney's would just shell out some big bucks for a whole dang STAFF of o-line coaches. I mean I wish Gilbert had his own coach. I wish Adams had his own coach. I wish Foster had about TEN of his own coaches! LOL.

I've seen a couple of you mention Ray Horton. Uh.....NO! He was TERRIBLE when he was here as a DB coach. Our DBs actually regressed under his tutelage. I was shocked when he was offered a DC job and don't think he earned it. Besides, he's a former Bungle.

If we really want someone to come in and solve our offensive line problems and jump start our ground game, Russ Grimm may be the guy. Hypothetically speaking of course.

It's still too soon to know about this line but how long before we just except it's the pieces and not the OL coach? They've had several.

several times when ben came to the sidelines , I could read his lips saying I have no time. ben usually says nothing about his linemen good, bad or indifferent. always seems like the same answer given, these guys are doing a good job. this is a qb sacked 40+ times a year. I don't see anything coming from him about them.

i'd keep moving them and trying different combo's until we get one close to right. it can get worse but not much.
