first off, forget last year. I don't need to hear larry had a good year. no, no he didn't as far as pass coverage and yards after contact.

larry foote will be key in this game for us and I hope he's up to the task.

locker can run and CJ can run, it's going to be up to foote to keep these two from breaking our backs on plays designed and when they breakdown. this has never been a strong suite of foote and has cost us in the past.

when will they have enough confidence in our backup ILB'ers to replace him on the field?

Wilson and Williams are the players left to do it, if garvin is inactive. Wilson probably has the best chance earlier in the year, but foote has to show up in this one and not get out of position. he also has to make the tackles and not give up the extra yardage that he's known for.

    thoughts?

I would love to see Williams get a chance, he can't be too much worse in pass coverage then Foote and would be able to close much faster when Locker and CJ run but experience counts and that makes Foote our best option still. Maybe Willson but I have no thoughts on him one way or the other, just one of those guys that has flown under my radar.

Foote might can't cover but you risk a blown assignment with the new linebackers in the game. They are probably not sound on calling the defense yet but maybe Timmons can do that now.

I am not one to accept that Foote is the key to stopping Johnson. To me the key to that is the athleticism which is Troy and Timmons. Those 2 hold the key. While that D last year didn't have a bunch of splash plays, many overlook that Troy only played in, and not the whole game, 7 games. SEVEN. Two of which he didn't play the whole game in. The key to stopping the running attack of Tenn is solid Dline play and these to guys above.

I'd like to see Vince Williams get some field time but it won't happen.

This is kinda what I was thinking.
I was pretty sure Foote was the one in charge of "calling the defense", and makin sure everyone is on the same page.
Until we find sumone else to handle that, we are probably stuck with him in the game, in the middle.
I also agree with Tarheel, that a healthy Troy can make a big difference in stopping the run
I also think McClendon might penetrate more into the backfield, and be more disruptive, than Casey was..
    We`ll see...
I have a feeling we are going to see a bit more rotation of the ILB`s, than we are used to, as well.
That could be good, or bad, if it happens.
I`m not scared of having Timmons, or Woodley, there, to take away the "outside escapability", on plays that break down, either...
Foote may be old, and a "liability" in some ways, but I just think he is fundamentally sound enough, that with the others in there to help, we will be ok....
    Here`s hoping...
`Cause he IS gonna be in there... "It is what it is", in other words... Hahaha...
Those are my "thoughts", that ya asked for...
    GO STEELERS!!!:steelflag:

Farrior had the numbers and good play as well... Couldn't cover for jack though. Foote is dependable and apparently the only guy inside that has grasped the mental part of setting things up. We could use another "smart" athlete but those seem to be a penny a dozen these days.

maybe not sunday but i think this year the coaches want playmakers on the field reguardless of experience or just being a rookie. years past i think they wanted to bring players along slowly but williams to me is a playmaker. i was excited when we got him and he showed me some flashes in preseason. i really think he sees the field quite abit this year. imo

I sure hope you're right because once he does see the field I don't think they'll be able to get him off of it. I'll add that I believe he has the football intelligence to run the defense as well.

when Timmons is in coverage and troy is in coverage, foote is the spy for the qb taking off for those big gains and first downs. Timmons can call the defense, that is not what we are talking about here.

foote has let us down before in this aspect and locker is not bashful about taking off out of the pocket. i'm pretty sure we have someone else that can call the defense or they wouldn't be the backup. that's not the issue. if foote got hurt play 1 we are not without someone else that can do that job.

I do expect as the year goes on we will see more time from our backups. foote though, has to bring his A game or we will be in trouble. as someone brought up in another thread about these young qb's we will be facing this year, they're first thoughts when our rush is felt is to take off running. larry has to be able to stop this and not get out of position like he often does when this happens.

it will be a back breaker which this defense and younger team can't keep overcoming like in years past. everyone is a year older and if we are to keep troy on the field all year, they have to take some of these LB type pressures off him. foote has to do this. we can't count on troy to do his and foote's job. he won't last.

I read an earlier post saying when is Timmons gonna start calling the shots?
Then we could replace knowledge (Foote) with athleticism and playmaking ability, or something along those lines.

I see some upside with our inside guys, but for whatever reason... Foote hasn't relinquished the reins in the coaches' eyes at least. Until then, he'll boast pretty good stats but the middle will be a smorgasbord as far as coverage goes until someone steps up or the terminology is refreshed. 3rd and long has been our opponents' swan song for too damn long... Week in and week out for a looooooong time

    http://www.steelersdepot.com/2013/08/above-the-neck-play-could-keep-vince-williams-above-the-line/

this is very good news that is quite telling about our young backups. butler has said in the past all his ilb'ers will learn both spots and some OLB. garvin has been doing both in camp.

if Williams is able to make the calls or Wilson, there is no reason why they can't see increased playing time. butler has said Timmons knows how to make the defensive calls in the past. I do like the aggressive play from these young guys and hopefully soon we will reap the benefits from them.

they kept these young guys for good reason I would hope.

Mac. Until he is on the bench I have the faith within the coaches and the organization Foote is the man to beat out. Seems odd that he left and came back and has not be supplanted

This is his last year as I see it. You have to give props and respect he has been not great but pretty darn good as an ILB

Welcome to the board Dobbler .. I agree Foote is not the answer to ILB but the ILB comes after the defensive line and McLendon and company should pave the way.

Foote is in his last year and someone will need to take the leadership role. Perhaps Timmons... ?

    We shall see ....

Gotcha. Pretty darn good has to do because as I said he has not been replaced. I think its more likely he is doing a great job then his competition sucks. Say what you will but Foote seems to handle the inside very well.
