O.K., lots of us like him, lots of us hate him...Personally, I`m somewhere in between...
Here is a link to his press conference, leading up to the season opening game at home against the Titans, for those who haven`t seen it...
    http://www.steelers.com/video-and-a...s-Titans/91893f0f-e47d-4af4-9a70-a5aaeabe72ec
    Quick questions...
Anyone think this is any different than previous pressers?
Myself, I thought he showed a little more personality, not so generic answers..
Thought he was a lot more specific about which players were doing good and bad, in regards to injuries, or performance...
Thought he was a little more direct in answers pertaining to how his team preformed in the preseason/what could we expect to change, moving forward...
And showed a lot more of his "dry humor/quick wit, snappy one-liner answers" to some of the press`s questions, although those mostly came in the last few minutes...
Hell, I forget now, because the GF distracted me for about an hour and a half, with a good dinner, and conversation(read, DRAMA), between the time I started typing this, and now, but...
basically, what I was wondering, is...
Why do I see him as a better politician, than field general?
He is obviously quite intelligent, and loquacious...
I love listening to him talk, but, I can`t help wondering, why, when he can give such a good, detailed, scouting report of all our opponents, he can`t come up with a way to stop them?...
    I guess my biggest complaints with him are;
    1) adjusting to what the other team is doing...
    2) clock management...
    3) using his challenge flags...
I`m not really sure how much effect a head coach can have on the outcome of a game, other than those areas, on gameday... Maybe there are "intangibles", I am not considering...
Other than that, he comes across as a pretty decent head coach.
He certainly knows what the other team can do... If you listen to his pressers..
    His players love him...
Unlike some other posters, I think he recognizes what needs fixed, since, he has tried to focus on special teams, and turnovers, and penalties, since he`s been here, I`m just not convinced, that he knows WHAT TO DO to fix them, he has certainly tried...
So, here is your chance, for supporters, and detractors, alike...
Tell us why Tomlin is, or isn`t a good head coach, in one thread,
    Any takers?
    GO STEELERS!
P.S. Oh Yeah, upon further review, I forgot to mention that it`s almost a 20 minute video, and I thought it was funny, at the beginning of it, I wasn`t sure if he was checking his watch, or checking "Crib notes" he had written on his hand, until I saw the piece of paper he had on the table while he was glancing across the room, trying not to make it look like he was looking down at his notes...
Like I said, why do I feel he would be a better politician, than General...
    Generals don`t get "teleprompters"... LOL...

    Problems I have with Tomlin:

    1. Spike/Timeout/Play scenarios. Ben is atrocious, but it's Tomlin's job to straighten him out and overrule him, and he doesn't (enough). This is pathetic.

    2. Occasionally seemingly sabotages the team for the sake of a larger point. I get the idea and don't entirely hate it, but sometimes it's just not a big enough point and too big a sabotage (intentionally butchering the RB situation against the Browns so that the RBs feel bad about fumbling, and/or get the message that fumbling is bad). Hey Mike, they already know that. It's not on purpose, and this isn't your garden variety fumbling situation. Let's actually try and win so we can get this awful day they're all having behind us, instead of letting it linger until the following September because it cost us the playoffs.

    3. The fullback situation from the moment he got here until the moment he signed Will Johnson. That was TOO long to be a big fat idiot, and it's been a bigger deal than people realize.

    4. Various things that can be loosely tied to him, but I can't really blame him. Things like a long string of injuries - Bad luck? Conditioning? Need a new coach? I have no idea. Occasionally the team has a terrible game (usually the offense). Out of synch, lackluster. But doesn't that happen to everyone sometimes? It happened under Cowher. Even the bad habit of beating great teams and then losing to garbage teams, or narrowly escaping by a field goal. And at some point the players have to be responsible for the effort they give. But I wish it didn't happen. I'm sure he could improve this situation somehow, but I believe the players like and respect him, and want to do their best for him. That's good.

    5. I'm sure there are other little things, if I think about it.

    Things I like about Tomlin:

    1. Everything else. And that's a lot. It's too much to even bother listing. There are things to complain about with just about everyone, players and coaches. Tomlin's got way more pluses than minuses.

    huh?

He's finished 1st in the division 4 times, 2nd once, and 3rd once. It seems to me he and the rest of the coaches have done a pretty solid job of coming up with a way to stop their opponents. If you go back and look at it the majority of our losses are due to self inflicted wounds. You know what those are interceptions, sacks, fumbles, or defenders simply being out of position. You don't have a winning percentage of .656 by being a bad coach.

I think the story of Mike Tomlin will be written over the next 3 years, as the team continues to transition from the veteran leadership of the past to a new generation of players.

I agree jack. we will see how he has built this team with his own players by then. carry over players happen with any coach and he did inherit some very good ones. when they are gone, we may truly see what his vision and results will be. colberts too.

I've often said, for the most part, I think Colbert with cowher's help was better then Colbert with tomlin of getting star quality players on this team. the saga continues.

Also caught the big smile on Coach T's face when talking about Jones. He knows what a force he will be in this defense

    Can't wait for Sunday

    Good point, and well taken.
I agree we have killed ourselves more often than the other team has flat-out beaten us.
I guess we are spoiled,, as Steeler fans, and expect perfection...;)
As far as how much the "discipline" problem is Coach T`s fault, I dunno.
I know he has a thing called "the news" that he shares with the team, after reviewing game tape, and any screw-ups are pointed out and listed, "in the news".
He seems like a very organized, and detail-oriented, focused, kinda guy.
I would think, "well prepared". However That doesn`t seem to translate to Sunday`s, for some reason.
Like I said, I don`t hate him, or think he is a terrible coach, by any means, it just seems there are some in-game type things he has room to improve on.
I`ve also caught myself wondering, since the topic has been brought up, about what exactly is a Head Coach`s "Job Description"???
They are responsible for hiring co-ordinaters, to call the plays on game day, unless they take that duty on themselves, and I imagine collaborate with them on the game plan from week to week...
Hire the rest of the coaching staff, to oversee positions, weight training, etc...
    And what else?
Design practices the way they choose?
Speak to the media at press conferences?
Cheerlead/"motivate" players, and keep morale up, in general?
Decide who stays, and who goes when it comes to the roster?
I`m just curious what a detailed "Job Description", for an NFL head coach would list as their duties/responsibilities?
I know that would vary slighty fom team to team, but, in general?

    GO STEELERS!
