the problem is not what tomlin says , is what the player think of him and follow him ..in other words tomlin doesn't fear anybody , and the locker room becomes an anarcky place

How do injuries factor into the equation?

I disagree the Steelers biggest problem is their best players getting injured and their lack of ball security.

I agree. Very little can be done about injuries Players are responsible for ball security.

I agree the discipline of this team is a HUGE, ongoing problem.
I would also say if it isn`t the "Biggest", it is the one most controllable.
Injuries have been a large problem recently also, but I just don`t buy that is all that preventable.
You can only do so much about keeping the players "in shape", Injuries are often freakish, and unavoidable in the sport of football.
Turnovers have also been a major problem, and I would put them in the "somewhat" controllable category.
That`s on the players, both, to hang onto the ball, and on the defensive players to take away the ball.
I`m sure we all remember Tomlin benching every one of his runningbacks, in the debacle against Cleve, last year, but how much good did that do???
Sure, the next week they all came out carrying the ball with two hands the entire time, but...
Sometimes, you gotta show faith in a running back, and give them another chance, right after they fumble.
Now, I`m not saying multiple chances, or continue to play a guy that frequently coughs it up, but I don`t think "zero tolerance" is always the correct approach, either.
As far as the discipline goes, too much has already been said here, that I agree with, to try and quote it all.
I will just say it`s extremely disappointing to continually be beating ourselves thru stupid mistakes and penalties...
And, HOPEFULLY, last year`s results, will get rid of that maddening, lackadaisical, "flat" approach to games that frequently led to us losing to teams we "should" have beaten.
    GO STEELERS!!!

Well Freak could have a point with the anarchy thing because we do seem to get a lot of penalties on ST and in the green and red zones so maybe this is our way of fighting the system ya know? LOL. Who knew?

I think everybody knows how I feel, no use reiterating my thoughts.Just one quick question, do you find the Steelers to be entertaining to watch?Do you think you see good football on a consistent basis?

With an 8-8 season what do you think? Hopefully we will see consistency this year.

I guess discipline could be a problem but I'm not sure. To me, the Steelers problems the last couple of years were caused by a team that had gotten old and the back-ups weren't up to snuff. The Packers had 16 players on IR during their Super Bowl year in 2010 and still won it because their back-ups played very well. The old Virginia basketball coach, Chuck Noe used to say, "You can only coach 'em up so much." Poor personnel decisions have been hurting the Steelers as much as injuries or any lack of discipline.

Well I'm going to get beat up but I have to defend MT. I don't think it is his fault, I think he is actually a victim of circumstance as I have witnessed him get in the grill of a few players. I think the problem is the lack of depth, I believe the players know it and Tomlin understands that while the discipline problem has to be addressed, what can he do, the lack of depth prevents him from benching players, especially along the oline. Haley';s dink and dunk west coast offense doesn't work here not because of discipline but the oline, we always had a huge line and big backs for a power run game but the only ones left aren't too good and plays get blown up right after the snap so we look horrible, it was why the sandlot style of BA's offense seemed to work, we didn't like it but it worked better than the type of offense Haley wants as we don't have a good enough oline to pull that off. The other part about penalties on the oline, remember, some of those occur to keep our QB from getting killed, I saw 2 holds during the preseason that happened when we got beat so bad that a hold was the only thing that kept Ben from a season ending injury, improve the line and maybe the discipline problem becomes a mole hill instead of the mountain we all think it is.

The dink and dunk offence Haley runs is exactly the type of offence a team should be running if they have a weak Oline. 5 and 7 step drops, which were common with BA, are the opposite of what we should be running if we have a weak Oline. Just because Ben was able to scramble to keep plays alive doesn't mean the play calling was good, it means Ben made it work. As Ben gets older, slower and more banged up, his ability to scramble is going to be limited. We're starting to see it already as he's gotten hurt more the last few years than he ever did before.

Are they entertaining? Sure. We can't put teams away so games always end up being close. That's entertaining football. Do we play good football on a consistent basis? Not even close. We are a very inconsistent team, not just from week to week, but from one play to the next.

No it's not. It's a thread where intelligent and well informed Steeler fans can have a cordial discussion about their thoughts on the coaching style of Mike Tomlin and whether or not it's effective. You'll find differing viewpoints and varying opinions but that's what makes the world go around and it's what makes this MB interesting. If we all had the same cookie cutter opinions on all things Steelers how boring would that be? Why is is that we can't criticize without being labeled as a negative nanny or show support without being labeled a kool-aid guzzler? Why can't we all show a level of respect for each other's opinions and support our own opinions with well thought out and insightful discourse and debate?

But more importantly we were 24th in penalty yards per game, so the penalties we are committing are big ones (Pass interference, personal fouls, holding, ect...). Also, 26th in turnovers committed. Another sign of poor discipline. Lastly, I believe their is a correlation between our injury problems and the discipline on this team. The players are not coming in shape, we are drafting guys who are not hard workers and don't take pride in being in great shape, and our strength and conditioning program sucks. I would say these are all reflections on the head coach.

We've got entirely too many troublemakers here. Too many 40-year-old adolescents, felons, power drinkers and trustees of modern chemistry. :lolol: (I got to watch that one again and again)

Jack you made some good points here!

Lack of turnovers and too many PI calls suggests to me that our problem is the DBs.

And part of the problem with the lack of playmaking by the DBs is that somewhere along the way, we moved out of Blitzburgh. We're not getting adequate pressure on the QB which leads to turnovers.

there were also games we had over 100 yards in penalties too. add that to the offensive turnovers and timing of those penalties and that knocks the heck out of consistency on offense. it's not always about how many but when.

Because teams were picking us apart, so DL had to have the LB drop into coverage more. Hopefully the secondary has improved enough where they don't need so much help. Also, I believe DL is going to be turning the DE loose. Could see a big shift in TO and sacks this season.

So I say the lack of pressure is negatively impacting the DB play and you say the DB play is negatively impacting the pressure we get on the QB. :hmmm:

    The duel is on! :duel:
