They must really like the back-up safeties abilities to cover and play CB!

Lake was absolutely going out of his way for this kid. I really think the TE situation is forcing some of these promising guys out.

I can't recall Moore ever doing a damn thing. Strange move, but they probably know more about these things than I do. ;)

Thought for sure Hawthorne would be brought back eventually.

Puzzled, I liked Woods better also. Even Dunn. Moore is a small wr who is quicker than fast.

I think it strange we have 2 wr on the PS instead of adding Green or Hawthorne for developmental purposes. Heck, there's gotta be a TE with PS time left who is out there.

I agree there is no reason to have two WRs on the prac. Squad. That is probably our biggest area of strength . Justin Brown will be the first called up if need be,so why do we need Moore . Really confusing.

Hawthorne is a mistake, should have held onto him, Lake talked him up pretty good, I trust Lakes judgement. Couple of guys on that PS we could have easily left off, losing Hawthorne is a head scratcher for sure, threw away a pick.

If the team wanted Dunn and Hawthorne, they would have had them.

...and I wouldn't be at all surprised if Moore wasn't on the PS a month from now.

I realize that Colbert's draft record has been pretty stellar, but think about this. We chose an underperforming RB and Cowboys and Eagles castoff in Felix Jones over Jonathan Dwyer, A COLBERT DRAFT PICK. We chose a NT that's bounced around for the last five years in Fangupo over Alameda Ta'amu, A COLBERT DRAFT PICK. I know you can't hit on every pick but it seems to me that when the Steelers had opportunity to choose between a homegrown player and somebody else's castoff, we chose the castoff and not our own draft pick. I just found this interesting.

I disagree with your logic and I think you're being a tad hypercritical of the organization. In rounds 4-7 of the draft you are hoping to get guys who can compete for a backup spot. When we ate that dead money last year after cutting Ta'amu, I was surprised he was brought back. Fangupo wasn't bounced around for 5 years, he was in last year's draft.
Jones, a former first round pick, is a much cheaper (possibly less than) one year rental. If Bell didn't hurt his foot, he likely isn't even here.

My mistake on Fangupo. The guy's 28 years old isn't he? I thought he'd been in the league longer than that. I'm not being hypercritical at all, I would have just thought that all things being equal, we would have gone with the guys that we drafted over another team's castoff. I don't think any of us would have been surprised if Dwyer was chosen over Jones and Ta'amu was chosen over Fangupo. Those competitions were that close. Now obviously the team thought differently even though the rumor's floating around that "the coaching staff" wanted to keep Dwyer over Jones. Ta'amu I thought played well in the preseason so why give up on a meaningful (and yes, 4th round is meaningful) draft pick so soon, especially after sticking with him after his bout of stupidity last year.

At any rate, shouldn't the fact that we drafted them and they were homegrown provide some kind of advantage when the competition is close? How is that question hyper-critical?

Dunn doesn't surprise me, Hawthorne does, I don't question the teams actions too often but I don't see the logic in not even attempting to develop a 5th round pick. If they let him go next season it would make more sense but how could they possibly know what they have or don't have in him this soon. Waste of a pick IMO.

I don't question cutting a 5th round draft pick if he doesn't play well. I don't question cutting a 5th round draft pick if he's hurt. But when it comes to that last CB spot, and especially the practice squad, Hawthorne is virtually going against nobody. There is no competition there. They guy they originally kept guy over him they liked so much they cut him a day later. And the circumstances of Hawthorne's drafting (formerly a bigger prospect, had some injuries, sort of a project with big potential guy and fits the Steelers' mold) indicate that they thought he was a guy they could develop in the long run. And with Thomas and Golden active, we've got plenty of emergency cornerbacks so there's no rush. These guys like Green never had a shot. So to not even give Hawthorne a spot on the practice squad after several opportunities to do so tells me that they really, really just don't want the guy. They loved him in April, and now they just don't care. So to me the question is...

What could Terry Hawthorne have done during his time recovering from surgery and then few healthy weeks to convince them he's not even worth keeping around in the future, and to throw away that draft pick and all the beliefs you had about him a couple months ago? What did he do? I didn't hear anything bad. If it was based on his performance - look at Landry Jones. He looked so bad in camp he shouldn't have made it past July, but they kept him because of the bigger picture, and promise of the future, and uselessness of his competition (JPW). Suckage from Hawthorne was to be expected. If it's because you like this other practice squader's special teams play better, then why the hell did you even draft him?

I don't get it. Either you like the guy or you don't, but I don't know how you go from liking him enough to take in the 5th all the way down to determining he's so bad he's worse than the guys you already know for sure suck, based on like a week of work and a non-serious injury. Hopefully there's more information that we don't know, because on the surface it looks stupid.

I also like the upside of Woods better than who I consider a very limited Moore. I'd have rather they picked up someone else.

:this!: The only thing I can think of is that sometime between drafting him and releasing him they became convinced he would never remain healthy long enough to make any contributions.

Perhaps he was asking too many questions about why Jonathan Dwyer was cut, and Tomlin got mad.

This move - regarding both players - is a bit of a head scratcher, to be sure. What does Moore have that needs protecting that we couldn't get in any other WR currently wandering the streets?

Alot of these moves are head scratchers to me as well. Hawthorne, Ta'amu, Dwyer all rings into something more than what the average fan knows. Even keeping a blocking TE on the Injured reserve/return list is questionable. You telling me we could not fine someone off the street to do what Spaeth can do?

:lolol: possible. Maybe Tomlin saw him drop a football on the way to the locker room.

I don't know much about Moore but I tend to agree with your thoughts, the very least I would have liked to see Woods back here.

they are still sifting through cuts MT said.

i'm not sure our roster is set yet if that's the case.

hawthorne was injured a lot in college too.

fangupo was a guy they were interested in last year in the draft so he is fairly familiar to them. it seemed to me he was ahead of ta'amu throughout most of training camp. keeping him active did kind of surprise me , but maybe they didn't want the cupboard bare if they tried to PS him.

My guess is there is more to the story with these guys. Taamu I thought was going to get cut from the beginning of this year. Issues off the field and not setting the world on fire to dismiss the headache. Hawthorne while being physically gifted is injured a lot, even in college. You wonder if they saw enough out of him to say he will never be a big time contributor. Dwyer had his chance to nail down the starting RB job. Last year he came in totally out of shape. This year he had problems hanging onto the football. That is one thing Tomlin does not put up with is bad ball security. Bell was drafted to be the future and Jones fits the new scheme more than Dwyer. Plus Redman is a clone like Dwyer but is a better short yardage back.

And who knows maybe there were personality issues with Taamu and Hawthorne. My guess is there was plenty of film on those guys to warrant the cut.

I think lumping redman as a dwyer clone is way off base. redman is a far better receiver and pass protector then dwyer will ever be. that fits what we want to do in this offense much better.

The only way to describe some of these moves is BIZARRE and PERPLEXING. I just don't understand giving up on draft choices like Hawthorne and Ta'amu so soon. Ta'amu showed some ability in the preseason and Hawthorne never seemed to have a shot. The PS would have been a good spot for him this year to learn and realize some of his potential. You can't coach size and speed and he had a fair amount of both and fit the mold of a Steeler CB (ie Allen, Taylor, Lewis, etc.) going all the way back to Mel Blount.

Since the Steelers are giving up on these DRAFT PICKS so soon are we to assume that they are admitting that they failed in the draft process? I realize you can't hit on every pick but the cutting of Ta'amu and Hawthorne just doesn't make sense.
