looks like the Raiders are going to sign him to their practice squad.

i think this was a terrible mis calculation by the Steelers FO. i think they planned on adding him to their 53 man roster once they IR Spaeth. they are already this at ILB and they let a guy they could help with a ton of upside get away. im usually with the FO and their decisions, but i think they blew this one.

i guess that opens things up for Hawthorne.

If the Steelers want Mcfadden they can sign him from the Raiders' practice squad and add him to their 53 man roster.

nope we sign him but he has to go to our 53 man roster not back to our PS... so we didnt lose him.. YET... if you loook he was the first guy cut .. they cut him on friday and all the rest on saturday... very odd.. first one cut and maybe the first back to the 53.

Time will tell depending on who they do decide to add.

IMO they should have IR'd Spaeth for the year; don't forget that he was out in camp for a while to have his knee drained, before he had the foot injury. But if they thought Spaeth's knee wasn't going to be an issue going forward, I would have cut David Johnson, then brought him back if/when Spaeth is IR'd.

And Hawthorne didn`t make the PS, either.
Haven`t seen if anyone else picked him up.

I hope Hawthorne works his way back at some point this year or next year. Seems stupid to draft him in the 5th and then cut him because he was recovering from surgery. They didn't even like the guy they kept instead (Green, who is gone already). He undoubtedly has more upside than the guys he was battling. I'd have liked to see him on the PS. I know people don't like handing guys roster spots because of draft status when they haven't earned it, but that's basically what we did with Cortez Allen, who we kept despite the injuries he had his whole first preseason. That was worth it.

I'd like to see McFadden back, too, but Oakland could hang onto him. He's good.

The McFadden cut sort of wreaks of a relationship that went sour. It makes you wonder if HE thought his spot was safe and wasn't working as hard in camp as the FO wanted. I can't imagine they have a wink and a handshake to bring him back. He wouldn't have wanted to leave just to come back. My guess is this is mutual.

When it comes to Hawthorne I honestly don't get it. He was a cover guy, but again I wonder if what they saw about his prep was lacking. Maybe he wasn't doing other things to make himself better when he couldn't work on his game physically. I would love to see those things commented on or asked about in the presser today.

Makes me wonder if maybe they still expect Spence to make a return late this season.

I guess there's no real reason to take Spence off the PUP, since you could just IR him once he comes off if he's not going to return... but maybe but no placing him on IR they're saying there is a chance (no matter how small) that he returns this season.

The raiders add McFadden to their PS yet they kept 4 QBs and 2 Punters on their 53. They will make changes and if they move McFadden up he's gone.

Maybe McFadden just didn't impress the coaches like he should have. He definitely wasn't very good on ST which is why they kept Kion. In fact Rolle outplayed both but his inability to be a solid STer got him cut too.

I think McFadden's problem was the rise of Vince Williams. Williams showed up to play and is looking smart enough and tough enough to be the #3 guy this year. That means McFadden would be #4, and Timmons and Foote don't have much of an injury history. Backup linebacker is a crucial special teams spot, and putting an inferior ST player on the field 8 times a game just because he's superior on the field when he plays defense (0 times a game) just doesn't make sense. If he was going to be the top backup, then maybe you make that sacrifice. But I think they love Williams, so they had to go with the ST guys from #4 and beyond.

Of course, I also like to think that Sean Spence is looking good enough to return late in the year.
