Bell lost focus and got out of shape when he held out,
He had two to three more very good seasons left in him if he resigned and stayed focused. It was sort of a self fulfilling prophecy that he was on the decline

    Facts!!!

I had a coworker who was in a frat. His wife was in a sorority. This man said he had a meeting with a money man because his kid was 10 and they didn’t have anything saved for his college fund. How in the hell are you a college grad, pay dues and haven’t set your kid up with anything?

All that so say you are preaching the gospel and its crazy that athletes make this type of money and don’t put anything away for their kids.

1 million kids invested in a boring fund for 18 years in the market is about 7.7 mill. These athletes are making a ton of money in a short amount of time. Put that auto invest on and its definitely generational but at 24.. I was not thinking about the stock market, unfortunately… so its easy to say, hard to do.

saved the team from what? Not winning playoff games?

I’’ll keep repeating it, you have to improve or surpass what we did with Bell to claim he saved the team from bad times.

We weren’t better without him unless we count the covid year with the hot start that ended with a Cleveland loss AT HOME because we couldn’t run the football or refused to run the ball

I have to agree with those who think theres more going on than we know. Its not just being good at your craft and young. You also have to have a good relationship with your bosses to get promotions/raises etc…NFL football and the player owner agent relationship dynamic is probably no different.

The longer these things go the more personal it gets for the player. Very easy to develop a chip and become spiteful of the whole situation. JPJ has to remember the Steelers have been around and will be around a lot longer than him. He hasn't been around long enough to play the "face of the Steelers" card in the negotiations.

We were ceratainly better than we would have been if we payed him lots of money and cap space and he was what he was in NY. A mistake like that wouldn't have been terrible if we made it now, but when we were paying Ben a massive overpayment like that would have made the end of Ben's time even worse than it was.

You seem to think we would still have gotten something close to prime Bell. Based on nothing. And it's the opposite of what actually happened after he left.

We haven't won any games in the playoffs since we got rid of DJ or Claypool or Mitch or Bush or Fields or Wilson or ... Lots of other guys we rightfully got rid of.

Does that mean we should have kept all those guys too?

It's possible that your right but it's pure speculation.

The data we have says the exact opposite thing.

Most people are bad with money. They don’t understand taxes, they spend what they make, and they assume the next paycheck will always be there. That habit is survivable if your peak lasts decades. A doctor, lawyer, engineer, or IT professional can stay near the top of their earning power for twenty or thirty years. Mistakes get padded by time. Income keeps coming while they learn. An NFL career does not work that way. The window is short—often only a few years at the top. Many players are young when the money arrives. They have little training in how money actually works. Taxes, agents, family pressure, cars, houses, “investments,” and a lifestyle built for a paycheck that can vanish after one injury or one roster cut.So they live like the peak will last. Then it ends. That is why so many former players look rich on paper and thin a few years later. They did not fail because football paid too little. They failed because a brief, high-income spike met youth, taxes, spending, and almost no margin for error.

Nearly all NFL players have agents.

I'm sure all of those agents refer them to financial advisors...who are hopefully at least half-competent and not just grifters.

The sad thing about the lack of education on the topic is that it actually isn't that complicated (although it's hard to have a high savings rate). But there's a massive industry around telling us that we're all just too stupid and couldn't possibly do it ourselves.

Again, a book like Simple Path to Wealth (or his free blog...google Stock Series JL Collins) gives the basics of index investing (and some other financial stuff too). Or google "Boggleheads 3 fund portfolio".

I do think you're right that it's really tough for young people to "strike it rich". Happens with lottery winners too. And I think can really destroy people if they aren't careful with it.

Agents are usually good for a player while he’s in the league. That’s when they get paid. The relationship is built around the contract, the next deal, the next check ... When the career ends, so does most of that help.Financial advisors work the same way. They take a cut of the money while there is money. When the account shrinks, they disappear.

Then comes the rest of life. The cost of women. Divorce is common, and it often splits what is left after the tax monster takes his share. NFL players should not get married until they are 30. Most guys out of the league by then, light on real money skills, and suddenly dealing with taxes, family issues and people who were only around for the peak. This is why the players union should focus a lot more on life after football. Hire people to give former players financial advice / social work at no cost for 10 years after the last snap, not just while the checks are still coming in.The league already extracted the body. The cost of playing football can be high. Somebody should help them keep what they earned.

I feel very strongly about this.

He is not top 5 and I am not even sure he is top 10. I am not going ot argue with you .. That is my opinion right or wrong and you strike me as the type that likes to prove your right. We will agree to disagree.

That logic is dubious at best, and unfair to Porter. The Steelers have a history of dragging things out with the bigger contracts. They waited until the week before the start of the season to make an offer, and a lowball one at that. They try to put the pressure on with time and their self-imposed deadline of the start of the season. Is it irrational for Porter to enter this with a little distrust? Not really, especially when you remember that his father ended up finishing his career elsewhere.

I wouldn’t say they have a history of lowball offers. They made Watt the highest paid at his position. Porter approached this suspiciously from the beginning. I’m not sure that was fair to the Steelers. You said it yourself alluding to his Dads career here. This is and has been personal and I blame Joey and his Dad for that. The Steelers can no doubt be hard headed especially when you push them and I believe Joey did that from the beginning.

Entering into it with some doubt about the team and pushing them is not the same thing. I think you and others are assuming the worst of Porter, which is unfair.

Not at all. Look at his actions. He faked an injury that was obvious. He has no tenure, no accolades, it wasn’t the tight way to go about it. He admittedly said he is leaning on his Dad through all of this which is obvious.

Given that he is still limited, I'm not entirely certain that he faked anything. Even if he did, the team went right along with it, and continues to do so. The Steelers gave extensions to three teammates who were drafted with him, none of whom have proven themselves as Porter has done so far. I think some of y'all are just looking for an excuse to bash the guy for not giving up millions of dollars to help out the team.

Thats not how rich people live. Generational wealth to me is never having to worry about money, your children never worrying about money their children never worrying about money. it’s not thinking about budgeting or let this money sit in a portfolio so I can earn a million a year off it. These people are buying mansions, luxury cars, boats, sending their kids to the best schools. 30 million even 100 million dries up fast and how many football players even makeup that portion in the league, most players dont come close to that.

Generational wealth is F-U money, 30 million isnt F-U money. Elon Musk has F-U money although technically I think he has what is called dynastic wealth.

It’s insulting when they say “I gotta feed my family”. There making generational wealth no matter how you slice it. JPJ already grew up with a silver spoon so he has no concept. This is all about ego and it’s personal for him. It is so insulting. I can’t wait until pro sports salaries come back to earth. It has to happen at some point.

Why does it have to come back to Earth? The only way that happens is if the sport itself collapses, or at least has a massive drop in popularity and profitability.

The three teammates signed before Porter didn’t sit out or fake an injury. Look would you equate Porter to Watt in his prime? Because that is how he is acting. The bottom line is the Steelers clearly value the cb position at a certain level. They never valued it as highly as the rest of the league. JPJ values himself much higher than the Steelers do. It’s obvious at this point he needs to be traded. I just don’t like how he has gone about this. The Steelers aren’t Lilly white in this but I will always, always fault the player more so in these situations. I think it is the height of selfishness and arrogance. In this situation fueled on by Daddy and the Agent.

Bingo. That is inevitable. With the advent of AI and Robots I can definitely see that happening. At some point everyone will be just as athletic as pro atheletes. Not only we as a society become more woke each year which will erode the quality of the game. But the main thing of its downfall will be oversaturation, player greed and ownership greed. There is already so much I dislike about the nfl and professional atheletes. 20 years ago we never thought Hollywood would tumble. Look at it now it’s irrelevant. The same will happen in professional sports. The beginning of the downfall was when pro atheletes began to tell us how to think, how to be.iebe a d how to act.

I'd argue that if you can't say F-U to your employer when you have $30mm, you won't ever be able to do it. Because you'll be too dependent on income (instead of wealth).

I sat down on a bench one day at a small town festival and another gentleman was sitting there. Nice guy and among others he was James Harrison’s agent.

He said he gave financial advice to every one of his players and he said not one of them ever took it.

95% are broke in 5 years

The biggest problem he said was the mother’s. “You owe me”.
