And yet there is still those who don’t understand this and don’t understand there is nothing lost by waiting and don’t understand Porter has no leverage no matter how kindly I have been to explain it

Steelers officially offered him a contract tonight....

 

The issue is that some don't understand that the cost control is priced into the contract.

And the fact that Porter is less cost-controlled than the other two big CBs that signed isn't good for the Steelers leverage wise.

 

That's one of the more ridiculous comparisons I've seen on this board, which is saying something.

 

What some here are missing is that this isn't just about getting him on the field in 2026. It is about keeping him beyond that.

 

I still feel confident that this will work itself out before game day. I'm not worried.

 

I am relatively confident that Porter will play Sunday. I am not all that confident it will be with a contract extension in place, which makes me think he will be gone as soon as he can get out.

 

If it doesn't get done Friday Dulac will say he meant Good Friday.

 

They could in theory tag him the next two years and in that scenario including this year only pay around 60 million total or 20 per year. Now how disgruntled would he be? I’m sure very.

 

Is there any doubt the second year would turn into a repeat of Le'Veon Bell's situation? That turns out well for nobody. That's a good way to damage the locker room and signal to other players that they don't want to be in Pittsburgh.

 

this team hasn't drafted a good corner since Ike Taylor.. i wouldn't think they'd let the one guy they finally did draft well, leave over a contract dispute. it's not like we have money tied up with a franchise QB.. this is a passing league, teams need quality CBs more than ever. i'm confident they'll get him locked up soon.

 

Actually, it turned out very well for the Steelers. Bell saved the Steelers from themselves. A market-setting contract would have been a disaster. And how many players wanted out of PIT because of money after the Bell situation? I am sure Kahn is very comfortable with his negotiating position right now.

 

That is definitely the risk you run in that scenario. I wish they would sign him to a reasonable deal but I keep hearing they are far apart.

ummm… we haven’t won a playoff game since that happened. What folks forget is if he signed that contract he never takes the year off.

and lets be real, that contract would’t have set us back at all. It wouldn’t have been the end if the world if it didn’t work out and we moved on from him 2 years later.

T.J.s deal got done days before the Steelers first game. Troy's deal got done at the 11th hour. I see no reason why this wouldn't.

I don’t think we should trade him but they could franchise him the next two years. By then his best days are likely behind him as he would be nearly 30.

 

Ideally both sides of the negotiation can find some reasonable compromise.

But if someone goes full Mr. Big Chest, you pretty much have to trade them. Even if you get what looks to be a terrible return (like we did for AB).

Although I don't think AB was necessarily contract related.

We certainly wouldn't want Porter to turn into another Bell. But Bell didn't refuse to play until the 2nd tag. I don't think Porter would refuse to play this year or next year.

IMO, the real problem with waiting if you think the price is too high now is that the price goes up (quickly) over time. And trying to negotiate a new contract after we use a tag (or two) means that we have less cost-control / leverage for whatever that longer term deal looks like.

So waiting only wins if (1) the player has absurd demands or (2) the player declines with time. I haven't looked at CB aging curves, but I assume that they generally deliver on 2nd contracts if healthy (and that 3rd contracts are bad). CBs do get hurt a lot though. So it's possible that they age a little more like RBs than other positions? My guess is that CB injuries look different than RB injuries though.
