I think that this is just a false belief by many. Oh, he struggles in zone and Graham uses more zone... Except that he was the second best corner in zone coverage when targeted in the whole league last year according to PFF metrics. Now, is he better in man? Yes. That is where he's his best... but even a heavy zone team is going to only be in zone 65% of the time. Also, he was a man heavy guy early in his career, so it's not like he is locked into one way of doing things... his most defining trait is adaptability. If Graham can't figure out how to utilize a lockdown man coverage corner, then maybe he shouldn't be a DC in the league. I'm certain he will figure out.

I remember that game, and didn't Timmons do that more than once?

It's like when they exploited the rules until the other team started complaining and they had the rule redefined. I dont think they set out to exploit this but more likely some if the building staff noticed it and then went to Belichick and he said sure keep doing it. Ive said it before the guy was so OCD that he just had to have everything available. It's why I dont buy the 4 tape story and why Goodell destroyed the evidence because it proved that it was still an ongoing issue that he had to have it. Im sure he has bookcases full of binders on every team/coach with breakdowns, plays, tendencies. Belichick to this day won't admit what he was doing was wrong. He doesn't see wrong or right just the need for the information.

He did it at least twice both in Florida if memory serves. They were forced to wear black jerseys in that Florida heat and trying to hydrate and he blew chunks.

I remember when posters thought the Steelers were the bad guys and wouldn’t pay the man

Or they were letting the Browns or other teams set the pay

The Steelers are doing what I suggested they would do

I was right they are right

    Naturally

Funny, I thought he said "the people upstairs". I didn't know if Joey was talking about his agent or God. :)

Funny that some fool thinks that letting the cornerback market get more expensive before signing Porter was the smart thing to do.

here is a thought joey. sit on the bench. keep waiting for your money while the others honor their contracts. you haven't really practiced. you may be good but playing half azzed won't earn you a thing. sit there and stew and the steelers will own you for 3 more years after this. rant over. :smiley1::hi::cool:

Y'all know the Steelers helped create this problem by sitting on their hands all offseason while other cornerbacks got paid, too, right?

Don't get me wrong. I'm not thrilled with how Porter is handling this either, but he's just following the example of his leaders, Watt and Heyward.

LOL... Joey Porter a man without a single Pro Bowl appearance, a man without a single All-Pro selection and you are comparing him to DPOY TJ Watt and 6 time All-Pro Cam Heyward? Can you see the difference???

Joey is going to make $4 million this year, and if tagged $24 million next year. If the Steelers don't think he is currently worth $30 million how is waiting going to hurt them?

Re: TJ. I don't think even Porter's camp is suggesting that he should be the highest paid non-QB in the league.

Re: Contract. His salary this year, the tag next year, and the tag the year after that will all be calculated in the contract offer.

The bad news for us is that the contract for Witherspoon had all of that AND the 5th year option year.

So Witherspoon's 4 year $33mm/year contract extension only had one "non-cost controlled" year.

If we try to do the same time frame with Porter (to maximize how long we can amortize the cap hit from the SB), then Porter will have two "non-cost controlled" years.

I think that's why his AAV will be higher than Witherspoon's.

I'm hoping that we can (1) control the guarantees better than we did when we caved with DK (probably why the contract isn't signed yet) and / or (2) can make the contract more back-end loaded like we did with Herbig and Benton.

My guess is that this gets signed Friday. Maybe even on Saturday right before the first game like Troy P did (that was an away game...so Porter maybe even has more time than Troy did since the team won't have a flight to catch). Waiting as long as possible and hoping that Gonzalez signs makes sense for Porter.

Because contract costs continue to go up almost daily. If they franchise tag Porter next year and even the year after that and he is playing Pro Bowl-level corner, the cost will likely be $40 million per year.

That's how the NFL works. The cost of signing him has already gone up while other corners are getting contracts at higher rates and are setting the market. Any NFL player that could sign a contract today that is playing at the same level at a later time is going to be much more expensive for the team to sign.

    Exactly

And zero guaranteed money per se up front

Steelers have the advantage and they are playing it smart

I’m amazed how many here can not comprehend this

I think he threw up 2 different times. I was a huge Timmons fan. I remember barking on this board they should have gave him another chance after we couldn't stop runs up the middle but got ignored lol.

He proved me wrong though. Dude went AWOL with the Dolphins then disappeared off the face of the earth never to play another football down ever.

Just pay Joey Jr.. I'm tired of not having great CB play. They've pi$$ed away poorer money I'm sure.

Porter's a household Steeler name. We saw Jr. In dad's arms at the SB

Just give him a damn contract and get his over with. He's a talented player at a difficult position that doesn't get in trouble in the prime of his career.

Yes I've gone back and forth on this issue and realize in this case he can pull the sentimental card.

Ok. Apparently you don't know who Cam Heyward and TJ Watt are. :)
