How can the O Line be such a mess?

I think this, or I want to believe this. I just hope its enough. The only problem I see in this thought process is they won't be going against backups, and now they will actually be scheme against, but I still think what you said will be true. We shall see

which lineman are you most worried about? I’m concerned about Cook. I believe we protected him a lot last year with a heavy set with either an additional oline or Washington beside him. My concern is with a 3 wr set he will more than likely be left on an island which is concerning.

 

Well the Steelers have invested heavily in the offense line in the past four seasons.

A bust like Jones does not help. We could have had several player ( 7 ) made the pro bowl pick after him in the first 50 NFL picks that year. He was a miss. Frazier was a hit. Fautanu better be at least average as a starter. It too way too early to judge Iheanachor and Dunker.

 

Its clear that dafting and development was a disaster under Tomlin. We can only hope it gets better.

It looks like Fautanu has settled down a bit. I hope so. If they can’t get it right it’s gonna be hard to run a three wide receiver set. They will have to out Washington out there to help and it will be quick -asses and dump offs to Jalen.

 

I expect the OL investments are going to start paying off this season. Again this line coach they added is solid, he knows what he's doing and he's got a good group of talent.

Iheanachor is 22, and should be able to RT at some point. I think they'll throw him into the fire in fact but we'll see.

Dunker is 23 and I think he's got a good chance to succeed at G. May need to sit the pine for a while but his time will come.

Fautanu's 25 and coming into his own at the most important spot. Frazier is 25 and should be a top third type this year anchoring the middle. McCormick's 26 and a solid guard.

Not only do they have good pieces, but those pieces are young. If there's one position group where the future is truly bright for this roster, it's the Steelers OL.

Only a matter of time

 

Ok, we got it the first time.

 

i don't care who plays, just that they play well.

 

I've never seen a four-bagger like that before.

 

I thought my dementia was starting to kick in because every post looked the same to me.

 

Yeah I don't see a way around Cook being replaced rather quickly. Playing a rook at RT isn't ideal, but it's better than playing someone who isn't good enough, as Iheanachor should improve with time and snaps. There will be ups and downs, the TEs and WRs will chip and assist a bit as we go through the season, etc., but there is at least a chance you arrive at some point with a starter in the position.

The interior looks solid overall. RG isn't ideal and unfortunately Dunker didn't show enough to expect early impact, however 2/3 of the interior is sound. Also Guard generally is a position with quick translation to this level. At least there is an option there now with Dunker on the depth chart. So to say two thirds are filled and you have a young player with some upside backing up the weak spot isn't the worst place to be.

Most offensive lines don't have all 5 positions manned by top end starters. You can't pay all of them either, so there has to be a mix of good and not so good, vet and youth. Steelers have a young line, and that's not necessarily a bad thing.

If Fautanu doesn't play well then I am afraid it's likely Rodgers will get hurt, and the season will be a wrap. But his development curve looks reasonable thus far, because his pass pro was respectable in year two and should improve further. I don't think he's going to be elite or anything this season. He may be solid though and that's enough to let's say get into the playoffs and maybe make a little noise.

If we lose Rodgers then it means we draft high, which isn't the worst thing given this QB class. Looking at this roster however I doubt we get into the top 5 picks, even if we have Mason at QB. This season feels iffy as hell due to Rodgers being on his last legs, but just saying that if you look deeper there's a lot of really nice pieces and things look bright going forward. OL is a really important element in maximizing the most important position on the field after all.

 

There's optimism, but there also needs to be results. Fautanu is a solid player, this is his first time at left tackle, so we will see. McCormick is also playing a different side, but he is also a quality player. Frazier is a very good center. I'd imagine we roll Iheanachor out there sooner rather than later. There's real upside here... We just need to see results. We don't need All Pro players at every position, but we need the right players playing well. I actually have faith that this unit improves over time. There's a good amount of talent there (even with backups like Dunker), and our coaching at the position is vastly improved. It just doesn't happen overnight.
