I am definitely weighing my options to take a pay cut at 62
Running my own business
Keep my earnings as a partner
To under 25k
But
That wouldn’t be fair

The right decision for my wife
To short her of my ss
When I die

 

Then out live her

 

I’m so close to retiring
But
Still seems so far
Don’t need to make a mistake now
Life is difficult
To say the least

 

Not sure my body is going to hold up until I am 67
Sometimes everything hurts

Retirement has been on my mind this year a lot.

Getting old in a tech field. Pretty sure I would have major difficulty in getting another job as I'm working on AI to currently take away my job.

Can't stand my job or people anyway and I know its taking a toll on my health. And like you said don't know how long my go years will be but my girl has health issues and feel like we have got to enjoy our time sooner or later. Otherwise why I have worked so hard?

 

Gotta say... I hate that a majority #1's didn't play at all tonight. They are going to be shaking off a lot of rust in week 1.

 

I thought it was just me not liking people
I am leaning towards my old age and lack of patience with people
Life is full of difficult decisions

Started this cleaning business 3 yrs ago
This is the hardest I have worked in 30 years
Unlike when I was younger, the body got used to it, now it just hurts
Couple of options
Find an easier job
But
Have to put up with other humans
Or
What I already put into motion
Getting rid of the hard jobs
And
Keeping the easy ones

It's a good thing we are playing the Falcons, they might be the worst team in the league considering their QB situation.

Nope I have read the older you get the less crap you put up with and seems to be true. I can feel how much more people irritate me now vs before.

But yeah I feel your decision now. I'm just letting AI take mine away and hope for a good severance.

And hope the best for you. I know that would be a hard descsion to make.

 

Oh yeah I'm 55 and yes very well aware of the rule of 55. Fortunately I still have my health and have worked hard on staying healthy the past couple of years.

I see my friends who are not healthy and have been to a few too many funerals in the past 3 years so my perspectives have been at the forefront on my mind.

My Jackson annuity will be matured
That will be added monthly income for the rest of me and wifes life on top of SS

Just made the Steelers decision to keep 4 QBs a lot easier put him on IR to start the season.

 

Sounds like you’re in a tough spot. The way things are trending, robot maids are the future and they’ll likely be here in about five years. As a result, I think people in the cleaning business are being slowly wiped out. AI is already scary-good and getting better at cleaning every month.Here’s the reality. Most companies, at the ownership and decision-making level, want to make as much money as possible with the lowest possible costs. The upside of robotics for people who are about to retire (or already retired) is that caregivers will become cheap! But all of society’s cheap labor is at risk from AI. Workers aged 18–55 in these fields will be replaced. Taxi drivers will be among the first to go, followed by people who assemble parts, clean/ garden for a living. The good news for them right now is that even though their careers are disappearing, AI and robotics are still very expensive to use except for certain automation tasks. But that fact will not last for the next 10 years... I think.

The latest analyses show that AI uptake is actually far slower than all the techbros predicted. Businesses may prefer automation, but customers often don't.

The problem this creates is that the amount of money which has been upfront invested in AI infrastructure - data centres etc. - is going to take much longer to turn a profit. Like, MUCH longer. The business model for the AI suppliers was predicated on a massive revolution in working which has yet to take place.

So the issue is whether the cheapening of parts (which is not necessarily going to happen - there is currently a worldwide shortage of RAM, for example) and the widespread adoption takes too long for the initial investment to last. And when it doesn't turn a profit in the time predicted, it may well be the AI companies laying off the workers. It will be similar to the dot.com bubble bursting in the early 2000s.

Toward the end of my mid-40s. I've read a little about these decisions and trying to understand how the US system works (grew up in Canada).

Just trying to get a feel for the basics because I assume that the details will change by the time I get there.

Personally...wondering if it's better to take early to limit the tax burden and allow investments to keep growing by spending down the SS money before touching retirement investments.

And I'm just a W2 guy. I'm sure this (and many other) decisions could get more complicated if you own / run your own business. Especially if it's still generating profit for you in retirement.

I get the sense that taxation sucks in retirement if you're accumulated a fair amount of wealth...but I suppose that's a good problem to have.

I think there is some truth to this, especially when it comes to the money being poured into data centres and chips compared with the profits AI is generating right now. AI adoption itself is actually growing pretty quickly, but most businesses are still experimenting with it and haven’t figured out how to turn those productivity gains into significant profits. And yes, while customers may appreciate AI for simple tasks, many still prefer dealing with an actual person when something is complicated or important.

So I do think there is a genuine risk that some AI companies have spent too much, too soon, and we could see failures, consolidation and layoffs if the returns take longer than expected. That said, I wouldn’t assume the entire AI industry is heading for a dot-com-style crash. Even when the dot-com bubble burst, the internet didn’t disappear—it kept growing while the weaker and overvalued companies disappeared. AI may very well follow a similar path. And yes… go Steelers!
