Do people really think that if Porter blew out his knee badly and there was a chance he would never be the same player, that the team wouldn't use that against him and sign him to a lesser contract?

This is common sense that has to be used here. I want him to be in camp, but I understand the dynamics of being a player. I played the game and was banged up often. I've been on the field with teammates that were badly injured and were never able to play competitive football again. The game is no joke, and nothing is promised when it comes to health.

    1. I think he's top 4.
    2. That's not how the contracts work in the NFL.
Example: Dak Prescott has been at a time the Highest paid Qb in the league, and nobody thinks he's the best Qb in the league.
Jaxon Smith Njibga is the highest paid Wr...he isn't the best Wr in the NFL.
Will Anderson is the Highest paid DE..he isn't the best DE in the NFL.
    J. Gibbs is the highest paid RB in the NFL, but he isn't the best RB in the NFL.
    Need I go on?
Do You see what Im getting at??

Of course you are . Hell you have been down on JPJ since he's played.
1st it was you said he couldn't tackle, he fixed that, and then you said he got too many penalties, he fixed that, the man is the best CB we have had since Rod Woodson, and people act like great CBs grow on trees. There is a reason he's the best CB we have had since then, because they don't

I don't think JPJ is better than Ike Taylor... yet.

    He is. IMO
Ike was very good, and better at tackling, but JPJ is already a better cover man than Ike was at his best, and He is still getting better.
JPJ isn't playing with the safeties that Ike played with either.

Capology is really a simple science.

"Top-five money: approximately $28–32 million per year in the current market
Reasonable Porter extension: about $24–27 million per year, preferably over three or four years
Maximum I’d offer: roughly $28 million per year, with strong guarantees but an escape after two seasons
The answer changes if Pittsburgh believes his 2025 performance is sustainable and if he repeats it in 2026. At age 25–26, he is young enough that paying for his trajectory makes sense. But paying him like Sauce Gardner, Derek Stingley Jr., or another established multi-year shutdown corner would be aggressive."

This is what he is worth to me.
I could easily put in incentives, I know I saw where the Steelers don't do much of that... but you have to advance. Porter thinks he is top 5, then it's up to him to get it.
But I am non-negotiable on the numbers.

    That’s nice

I have always been factual about what I post about Porter and any other player

Sometimes the truth includes the negative

JPJr has improved and had a one good year last year I just don’t parlay that into a top 5 contract

Perhaps the Steelers feel the same way

I hope the both sides come to a fair agreement soon

If not he has a year left and they can then tag him

    Those are facts

I get your point but a lot of cb’s recently have just signed contracts. Cb’s who may be;eve are better than Porter. He wants paid more than them. If Dak and Mahomes were up in the same year I doubt Dak gets paid more. Even with all of thus why not put incentives in the contract? That seems to be the most fair.

I guess the question I was asking is where does your number come from?

Aside from being in the range you provided? Currently, the top 5 CB contracts by AAV are: 30MM, $30.1MM, $31MM, $31.1MM, and $33MM.

Does knowing the actual top 5 CB range change your mind about the numbers you have here?

Other potential questions that a player would no doubt ask:
    • Where does your range come from? Because it's not the top 5 CBs in the NFL. And the Gonzalez contract will be the highest contract of all of them by the end of the offseason. Porter will be in the top 5 too. Assumes both sign. So the top 5 CBs when the season starts will likely start at $31MM
    • Why is Witherspoon outside of your range for a top 5 CB?
    • Why do you think that Porter is so much worse than Witherspoon?
    • Why do you think that Witherspoon is worth ~ 15% more than Porter is?
    • How could you think that offering so much less than Witherspoon is anything other than telling Porter you don't want him to stay?
As described above, the stuff about when he becomes cuttable isn't the question when we're only talking about AAV. That's a question about structure and guarantees. If he had a huge AAV, a small signing bonus, no guarantees and a contract that was massively back-loaded then he'd be cuttable in year 1 no matter what the AAV was. This obviously won't happen for Porter. But that's almost the correct description for Benton.

You're low-balling Porter with the number you have. And telling him that we don't really want him on the team*.

    * Note: I really like Porter and would pay him right around Witherspoon (probably a little more) if the structure was reasonable. But if I could flip him for a 1st round pick I'd do that. Having a very good CB like Porter is really important for team success. But it doesn't matter without a QB. And I'd rather have 2x 1sts so I can move up to get a QB I like. I don't think Rooney would sacrifice the present like this though.

I like porter as a player but i can't stand the situation , he is a riaing cb was drafted for his family legacy we are trying to fill a superbowl future roster team and you get whiney to be payd as a best in the league holding inn when we just turned the page from Tomlin he refused to to play the run vs the bills showing doesn't play with a steelers heart , could become he head case if he doesn't accept 25 milion a year than Trade him and sign asante next season for 18/20 milion if healthy i don't see big difference and seems loving play for the Black &gold . We have him dean everette and a first round pick at lower price . Go f.. k yourself in Dallas with your friend pickens. I thoughed was a family member not an enemy growing around

I seem to recall early last season they weren’t even giving Joey the #1 receivers to cover.

Gibbs probably is the best RB. Him or Bijon. Smith Njigba might be the best WR this year. Will Anderson isn’t as good as Myles but he might be 2/3. JPJ is a top 10 corner.

Just remember that if the Steelers tag him twice, he will never sign with them, he will leave in free agency, and the team will get nothing for him. Even if they trade him under the second tag, he will not be worth as much because he will not be under contract at the end of the season and the trading team won't control the situation because he is a free agent. They won't get as much as they would if he was under contract for future years.

There are downsides to not signing him in regard to what the team gets in return for drafting one of the best cornerbacks in the NFL. That also has to be a consideration here. The team may only be hurting themselves if they end up letting him walk.

Id gladly take 3 more years of JPJ with tags. Those should be the best years of his career.

The funny part of all of this is you don't want to pay him big money. If the Steelers lose him in a couple seasons when he walks as a free agent, they will probably have to pay a middling cornerback $25-30 million dollars a year when they could have had a potential Pro Bowl or All Pro player for nearly the same money.

So many people want to stand on that hill and scream into the wind about this stuff. If he continues on his trajectory, getting a strong contract this season will be a bargain for the length of the contract and he will be making far less than many corners who are lesser players. That is how the new NFL works, and the teams that are smart enough to sign the right young players are on the right side of the ledger with terrific play at reasonable rates as the cap grows exponentially every year and they are under contract and team control.

People are entitled to earn what the market will bear, no matter what they do for a living. If you can't handle the price of admission, get used to rooting for bad teams. One of the things that makes a champion is special players. Porter is emerging as one of those. Special players cost money. It is not greedy to ask for market value.

By the way, I never said he was worth $33 million. Where did you even get that number?

$25MM would have been low even before the significant increase in CB contracts this offseason.

The team can't just make up numbers they'd like for him to play for.

Letting the best player we've drafted since TJ walk because he wouldn't sign a laughably low deal relative to the market for his position is how you get a crappy team.

I like JPJ and think he’s probably a top 10 CB in the league. Closer to 10 than 5 though so if he wants to be paid number 1 money that’s just being greedy. There is a way both sides can come to a fair contract.

Well, right there is a problem, in bold.
He isn't a top 5. So No, it doesn't move the needle for me.
Actually, I might be more prone to dealing with him had he not done the sit in.
The deal is that Porter wants me to gamble on potential. "Likely to Achieve" is a incentive that works both ways.
The decision may be that the trade value benefits me more than investing on a gamble. Personally, I like Porter and I want him here and happy.
I have no idea what Omar and Art will come up with, they'll do whatever is they do. This is just how I would do it and it is worth noting that I am not nor ever was a GM but I do know quite a few.
And I might have stayed at a Holiday Inn once or twice.

Nobody isn’t disputing he isn’t a special player. It’s the way he is going about things going all the way back to minicamp. Yes I know Watt did the same thing in his negotiations but he actually had a lot more to backup his reasoning for wanting to be the to- paid guy. He had DPOY accolades multiple pro bowl and All Pro accolades and consistently led the league in multiple stats important for his position.

JPJ while having some really good stats himself also only has one year where he wasn’t high in penalities. No pro bowls, no all pros, not even voted in top 100. Yet he wants to be paid as the top cb thus more than the 33 million. I think he is being so arrogant and ridiculous with this whole thing that the Steelers are like we aren’t going to waste our time negotiating with you until you at least show some good faith and start practicing. Who the hell does he think he is? It’s personal between his Daddy and the Steelers and he always listens to his Daddy. He was one of my favorite Steelers he is now becoming one of my least favorite Steelers.

IMHO we can't allow our feelings of despair in the secondary drive JPJ's value. As @jeh1856@jeh1856 pointed out he looks like he can become a top 5 CB but he isn't there yet and when he is, the Steelers will pay him accordingly, It would be jumping the gun a bit to pay him that now just because of how badly we need him out there.

You don't think that underestimating the value of the current CB market might have also led you to underestimate the value of a contract for Porter? Regardless of whether or not you think he's one of the top 5 guys at his position (which isn't the same as top 5 paid at his position as described in detail by many upthread). Rising tides lift all boats.

The idea of bonuses is about structure, likely to be earned bonuses are included in AAV. So you can't say "I want to give him an AAV of $28mm, but then include $2-4MM in likely to be earned bonuses". Because those bonuses are already part of the $28MM aav. Unlikely to be achieved bonuses wouldn't increase the AAV (e.g., for Porter: > 1 INT, getting to a probowl - for real, not injury replacement).

My understanding is that the Steelers don't really like including individual performance bonuses. Maybe because Rooney prefers cost certainly. Maybe because they don't want to include perverse incentives that see playing trying to do things that are better for their bottom line but worse for the team. For example, if Minkah had a big bonus for DTDs he probably takes that one to the house instead of having us keep possession and improve our chances of winning. I'm sure we can all imagine a case where a CB with INT bonuses maybe plays more risky and gives up a big play because they were literally going for the $$ on a pick. But they'll almost certainly include a bonus for making PBs and all-pros. I think that's pretty standard (but I could be wrong).

Re: trade. If we can get a 1st for him, I'd seriously consider it. CB is a very important position. But you trade a good young CB if you think it means you can get a good young QB. And another 1st would be significant ammo to move up. Especially if it was from a team that isn't that good...but those teams aren't likely to trade a 1st for a CB in a year where we expect several good QBs IMO.

Again: You say you like Porter and want him to stay. Why do you think he's worth so much less than Witherspoon? Personally, I think Porter is slightly better. And I'd do the thing we see multiple times in the top 5 CB values in my last post to you where we beat it by $100k.

But as I have tried to say many times upthread, while people in the media (who I think generally don't understand how contracts work) make a big deal about AAV, it's the guarantees (and the structure in general) that matter way more. I wouldn't be surprised if right now they are in a similar place on AAV and the real discussion is on guarantees. Because if I'm Porter, I'd be fighting pretty hard to have at least as much guaranteed as DK got. And it's going to be harder and harder for the Steelers to hold the line on this when they make decisions like they did for DK (who they likely wouldn't have gotten without the extra guarantees).
