He will be in uniform; extension or otherwise. Burden of proof is on Peezy Jr to prove he is worth the contract. Now, do I still want him extended?! Absolutely. That hasn't changed and I hope it does.


That said, hope must be paired with clarity. Peezy Jr has not clearly demonstrated he is worth Top 5 Cornerback Money. Now, he will have Top 5 Corner moments but those need to translate to games.

He gains nothing if he doesn't play, so yes... he will be in uniform. To be fair, Porter has a huge opportunity to make himself a ton of cash this year. If he has a 3-4 pick year and plays similarly to last year, he could come out of it with the highest CB salary in the league. I still would prefer we pay him, but he doesn't have to take less than he wants. I think if 28 million was enough to sign him, it would be done already. Instead, he is going to have to prove it. If he does, then I could easily see a 34-35 million/yr contract for him after the season, here or otherwise.

Well, its short of $22m now... I would imagine its closer to $25ish next season (or slightly more) with some higher contracts coming in. We'd have to be pretty certain that we are okay letting Porter walk if we tag him though. It won't be well received (especially if he plays well). If he has a strong season, I'd have no problem just paying him out. We will be letting Heyward and Ramsey go (and likely one of Highsmith or Watt). We'd be able to afford it assuming we are going the rookie salary starting QB route.

 

He might be in uniform in week 1, but I'm not sure they're going to sign him to a new deal before the season starts.

 

I believe they could tag him a second time for 20% more or something like that

You know me, I am still waiting for Porter to put on a helmet and start practicing again before talking about a second tag!


Having never taken a single team snap in practice in this new defense Porter is going to be miles behind where he needs to be come opening day.

Patrick Graham always talks about "Communication". To me this would get practiced in team drills.


I am still ASSUMING this a fake injury, and as soon as JPJ signs he will be back on the practice field doing team drills.

I’m very disappointed in JPJ. At a certain point you need to accept reality and recognize your agent works for you not the other way around. It’s evident there far apart and I think JPJ is being greedy and his agent is probably feeding into that. He’s always thought he was better than he was. He thought that back in the draft and was upset he didn’t go in the first and now he wants paid like a top five guy which he hadn’t earned yet on the field. He sits this out it’s gonna hurt his career if the Steelers play hard ball and don’t trade him. Then he could be forced to play on the franchise tag next year which is below his asking price at 24 million. So two years 0f a nfl career is a long time. He should learn from Leveon Bells mistakes.

Even if the offer is 4 years $27 million that’s a heck of a deal. I feel like it is selfish and I hate when the players poll this crap of holding the team hostage.

 

I hope JPJ advisors are smart.

 

This isn't really how contracts work. At least if you're talking about "top 5" in terms of $$$ and not cap%.

Cap inflation is very high in the NFL, so the new contracts are always worth more $$ than the old contracts.

And there are always good players at each position on rookie contracts making peanuts, so they can be top 5 players who aren't paid like it.

Until they get to their 2nd contract.

Then they get paid more than players who signed in previous years.

AFAIK, CB has been in a weird situation because there wasn't a big deal signed last year. So teams who are trying to sign good young CBs to big deals are trying to figure out (with players and agents) what the values of those deals should be.

But there's a disincentive for players to sign before the other big name CBs sign. Because the guy who signs earliest probably makes less than he "should" based on how other contracts get signed that offseason.

This is why it was so good for the team when we signed Minkah very early in the offseason...and it was not good for Minkah because the market was quickly reset right after he signed. If he would have waited until the deadline, he probably would have made more money.

And again, because I think it's been a little while since a big CB contract was signed the "penalty" for players to sign early is even higher this time around.

My guess is that this "impasse" comment is mostly just posturing. I'll expect this deal to get done right up until kickoff of week 1.

 

The tag value for next season (and the 2nd tag the season after) will already be factored in to whatever long term deal we'll offer him.

That deal will assume he makes the 1st tag value in year 1, the 2nd tag value in year 2, then they'll make assumptions about what the unconstrained UFA values would be in years 3, 4, and maybe 5 if it goes that long.

Waiting until next year will only push the price for JPJ up because of cap inflation.

And if he plays under the tag next season, then the price will go up a lot more on an APY basis because (1) he'll get a 2nd year of cap inflation and (2) the resulting contract will contain one more unconstrained UFA year (if the extension would be the same length).

The incentives are aligned for Porter to sign this offseason (unless he's crazy like Bell)....but also for him to wait as long as possible to sign (especially since NE announced they intend to reset the market at CB for a contract that I don't think has been signed yet). He'll do all he can to wait for the NE contract to get signed before he inks his deal.

 

JPJ sees those other CBs getting 30 million APY and he's probably asking for top 5 CB money.

The "Podcasters" have said JPJ will never be an All-Pro, because he will never have enough Ints to make people vote for him. JPJ has never had more than 1 Int in a year.

He is a shutdown corner that will make the Pro-Bowl because of his cover skills, but will never be considered one of the top 4 CBs in the league.

There are only 4 Outside CBs that get the All-Pro (1st & 2nd Team) and 1 of these slots is always taken by some RANDO that has a fluke year and posts like 5 or 6 Ints with a pick 6.

 

If JPJ is going to be the highest paid CB in the league, I doubt it will be with the Steelers. If JPJ signs first Gonzalez will get more than him to be the highest paid CB.
