For the last preseason game let's start some of the backups.

Wilson did not run perfect routes. That is true. On both plays he drifted upfield instead of staying flat against man coverage, which made the undercuts easier. But Howard is still the main problem here.He’s the one who has to put the ball where only his guy can get it (or at least where the defender has a much harder time undercutting it). On the second interception especially, the ball was behind Wilson. Leading him properly would have given Wilson a chance to run under it and would have taken the easy pick away from the Jets player. That’s quarterback responsibility. IE accuracy and placement to a moving target.

 

Start Allar in the first half. Start Howard in the second.

I do agree on playing with backups to see what you have. That said, Germie Bernard, Daylen Everette and Gennings Dunker either play the full game or all the way into the midway point of the third quarter. All three need those reps.

Spears Jennings should play the whole game. Same goes for Gabriel Rubio.

 

The first pick Wilson was supposed to cut straight across the 9 yard line which would have made him wide open for the first down. Instead he drifted 6 yards deeper than he should have, running down to where the defender was.

Allar is ahead of schedule.

He’s leapfrogged Howard and will start vs. Buffalo. The 22 year old has earned this by outplaying him for 2 pre-season games.

Howard gets the second half… and if he plays poorly, he’s getting cut

 

Allar actually played well. His stats don't show it because of 7 drops.

He moved in a collapsing pocket well keeping eyes downfield delivering one. He showed pocket presence using legs when needed protecting the ball.

He actually did a lot better than people give him credit for. Also many of his WR were blanket covered because of their inability to get separation.

 

Yeah I've now studied this play more than I care to admit. Both ints were partly on Roman Wilson as well as timing issues on the route. He wasn't really open on the 2nd one didn't have separation.

Also good read and play by the safety on the "zombie". So part of this is taking two young players to school a bit for a rough lesson.

 

I'm afraid to see Iheanachor at RT. Afraid I'll be disappointed.

 

I would actually like to see some starters see some action to get acclimated too the hitting.

 

Like many things, it seems pretty clear that this is "both / and" not "either / or". They both screwed up on the play.

 

The DB ran the route better than Wilson. I think the lesson learned here by the QB's is just don't throw it to Wilson. Even if he's open just play it safe and throw the ball out of bounds.
