Comparing a 3rd round pick without experiencing that has thrown no picks yet, and has a very strong arm with a 6th round pick that has thrown already 2int, and has a very weak arm isn't really a comparaison on what the other teams want.
Some of the people on here act like we are the only team with a bunch of Qbs on it right now, and if a Qb goes down , we are the only team they can get one from.
24 Qbs have been drafted in the same time as Howard, and Allar has been drafted, and yet somehow people think that Howard the 6th round pick is on every teams want list. LoL

Again from the time we drafted Howard, 24 other Qbs have been drafted, and yet some people think that a 6th round pick with no experience on our team is on every teams wish list. Like they don't have 3 , or 4 Qbs of their own .

I think we'll keep all 4 QBs... with Howard on the practice squad.

The Steelers have shown a willingness to tolerate playoff failure for long stretches of time. Not saying that Tomlin didn't earn that level of respect, but McCarthy is a SB champion and well respected coach in his own right. I can assure you that ownership/FO sees McCarthy in a similar vein as they did Tomlin. The Steelers aren't going to fire McCarthy if he cuts a back up QB. McCarthy was brought here for the sole reason of developing the young QB's. His only role outside of pure wins is to ensure that the Steelers have their starting QB of the foreseeable future. Mason just isn't good enough as a player to warrant cutting potential (as long as McCarthy deems Howard as having that potential). If not, then they can easily take their chances with the PS. Maybe he ends up thinking Howard has no chance and lets him go. That is certainly a possibility... but if there is even an inkling of a chance that McCarthy thinks that Howard can be a quality enough starting QB in this league, then the right thing to do is to hang onto him. The only way to guarantee that we do, is to put him on the 53 man roster.

I'm not under a delusion that there will be dozens of teams lining up to sign Howard... but there are enough teams that have poor developmental options that they might consider it. It only takes one team. Heck, even Kendrick Green got signed to a roster off someone's practice squad. The point I am trying to make is that McCarthy is here to develop a QB. Its up to him to decide who is worth putting the effort into. Mason is no longer a developmental player. The only way Mason makes this team is if McCarthy deems Howard to not have enough potential to be at least a quality back up QB in the somewhat near future. The risk is minimal, as our season is over if Rodgers gets hurt and Mason comes in anyways (unless the defense carries him in a similar fashion to his rookie year). If that happens, I'd rather have a look at the upcoming QB class and see if McCarthy likes any of them more than Allar or shore up some other portion of our team with a high end pick.

    This is looking highly probable

Just to keep him from wandering off they may even keep his current salary that would keep him and not cost a lot

No other team is going to claim him off of waivers

If they like Howard fine but don't use a roster spot on the 53 he has no special traits, release him and sign him back to the practice squad.

Yup, Coach promised Wilson a roster spot to run bad routes just so nobody would steal Howard from our practice squad. What an evil genius.

His fan club acts like he has won 6 out of his last 7 starts instead of losing them.

I assume that the poll means the roster.

You have to cut a guy for him to get to the PS.

Mostly on a team that was trying to lose.

His line with the Steelers last season in actually NFL games against actual NFL players was:
    35 for 58 (73.1% comp%) / 310 yards / 2 TD (3.8% TD%) / 2 INT (3.8 INT%) / 6.0 Y/A / 5.0 AY/A.

Not world beating (particularly the INTs), but respectable for a back up.

And I wouldn't necessarily confuse thinking the team will keep Mason with wanting them to keep Mason.

I think it's unlikely that Howard has a better career than Mason (probably Allar too). Because most QBs don't end up having a career as good as Mason's. Especially guys drafted where Mason (and Allar) were drafted...or much later like Howard.

But I'd rather keep both young guys just in case one pans out.

That's different than what I think the Steelers (who are generally very risk averse) will do.

I think the Steelers aren't just going to give Howard the backup job. He'll have to win it. He looked OK (and finished strong) in the first PS game. And bad in the second one. Allar looks to be about as good as he does.

If by the end of the preseason Howard looks like the 4th best QB, then I think he gets cut (and they'll try to sign him to the PS probably).

1st one. When they say keep 4 the Steelers arent talking about putting him on the PS, they mean carrying 4 on the 53.

I was told only people who havent played sports think this way.

But seriously, I think many people overrate Rudolphs abilities as a QB. He’s a dime a dozen. The experience of a QB is not worth a whole lot when they arent very good to begin with.

If they cut Rudolph and Rodgers suffers an early injury and they dont feel comfortable with either Howard or Allar yet they could go sign Jimmy G or could probably pick Rudolph back up.

But it doesnt sound as if McCarthy is planning on cutting Rudolph either so carrying 4 might be the plan.

I think he's replaceable for sure.

But he's also a safe hand to steer the ship if your QB is hurt for 2-4 weeks.

Again, I'd go with the young guys. I think you're right about trying to bring in a vet like Jimmy G (Haley suggested the same thing) or trade a low pick for a Rudolph like backup.

But the Steelers have been pretty risk averse for as long as I've been watching them.

And I don't think Howard has shown that he's better than the 4th best QB on the team...which I think he needs to do to make the 53.

I don't hate the idea of keeping all 4, but it's basically a wasted roster spot because it sounds like there's nothing for the QB4 to do. And if they think Allar is better than Howard by the end of camp, keeping Howard only takes away from the potential development of Allar.

We'll see what happens in game 3. But "competitions" like this are one of the big reasons I don't like that they cut the 4th preseason game. Would be better to get even more info on these guys.
