What Does a McCarthy Offense Look Like?

This. The 3B offense with Roethlisberger in his prime and a good OC didn't sniff 30 pts/gm but old man AR with a collection of pieces parts will?!?

 

There has never in the history of the NFL been a team that has scored over 30 points in every game during a season. The Steelers certainly aren't coming close to doing it this year.

 

Gotta say I like MM's style of camp. Attendees say there is so much going on it's hard to capture it all. I don't recall similar comments during MT's camps.

Mojo Moment...

The Steelers were in the middle of an individual period early in practice when the “Monday Night Football” theme song rang out over the practice field. That was the signal. Both sides jogged to the 2-yard line for five high-leverage plays. Running back Rico Dowdle said that coach Mike McCarthy used a similar tactic in Dallas that he called the “mojo moment.”

“That song comes on, we get together and get five plays with the team,” Dowdle said. “It can be at any point of the practice. Once you hear that song come on, you know it’s go time.”

During this particular period, the offense won three (or four) of the five reps, depending on how you want to look at it:

1) Jaylen Warren carried the ball into the end zone for a touchdown.
2) Mason Rudolph threw a TD pass to Ben Skowronek.
3) Drew Allar threw for the end zone and safety Sebastian Castro was flagged for pass interference.
4) Aaron Rodgers checked down to Dowdle, who was stopped short by inside linebacker Patrick Queen.
5) Will Howard threw short of the goalline to Darnell Washington, who may or may not have been tackled in a real game by Daylen Everette.

The point of the drill is to ramp things up quickly and unexpectedly, simulating a sudden change from a turnover or another high-leverage situation.

 

Conditioning including mental; imagine you're doing other drills across the field and suddenly you have to run over to the goal line and focus on play calls. I like it.

 

I hope a helluva alot better then what we saw the last 5 years. I can't wait to watch him call a game. Didn't follow Cow Girls or Packers closely during his regime.

Imagine that, a Offensive minded HC offense being better. Who would have thought that?? Problem is it takes all 3 sides to win. Let's hope nothing else slides back while the offense moves forward.

 

Then we get these dumb threads comparing Tomlin to some offensive minded HC, of course they're going to do things different and spend more time with the offense.

 

Problem,both sides of the ball was bottom 10 last season

 

Problem with Tomlin, too often he handcuffed his offense in the start of games or when we had the lead, even in the Bruce Arians and Todd Haley days

The only time the offense had some urgency was during the two-minute offense or when we were behind.

 

McCarthy runs a more classic WCO with the horizontal stretch sideline to sideline and lots of movement. I think this is why he likes Howard, because in his scheme his popgun arm doesn't matter. The arm strength is not as critical for his scheme, in fact Walsh designed it that way to allow for usage of lesser QBs who are wired to distribute quicker and mentally sharp.

Some of these newer WCO disciples have some minor adjustments in the classic WCO philosophy. SF is focused on the run game, and building to 30 carries per game through being efficient on the ground. LA does more vertical stretching of the field. Philly favors jumbo linemen up front. And so on. So that is why SF makes almost every QB look good. It's why LA had to pay big for Stafford when they already had a decent QB. And it's why Philly has won two titles with iffy QBs.

I am hoping McCarthy is about to do for Pittsburgh what Reid did for KC. Reid if you remember was rather vilified in Philly by some, and seen largely as a second tier head coach. But when he went to KC he was at a point in his career where he was ready to use the right pieces to win titles. This first draft looked very strong, the team looked sharp in that first preseason game, so far so good.

 

How did they manage to win 10 games and the division, I guess Tomlin should've been COTY .

 

Turnovers and some luck was the only reason.Same for 2023.I mean they were bottom 10 in yards on both side of the ball

And McCarthy isn't your dad, comparing a young offensive minded Ben Johnson to Tomlin a defensive minded guy in his 50s of course Johnson is going to be more aggressive on offense .

 

Every teams who was top 5 in this stats were 12-5 or better and the 4 teams who make the conference title game was in the top 5...The bottom 5 were all 6-11 or worse.Yards is not everything but this is still very important

 

I agree but you can't be outplayed and outgained so often and be a contender....I mean,the defense were also very bad last year,not just the offense
