In reality, all three guys will be lucky to become career back ups. I mean, the odds are against any of them ever becoming a franchise QB. I liked what little of Allar I've seen so far, but he still has a long way to go.

This was my biggest knock on him. He played awful against the best competition. Whenever he faced NFL caliber talent, he looked behind that. Now... that isn't always a perfect indicator of success at the next level, but it will definitely take some big games when it matters for him to get past that. It isn't irreversible, but definitely a bad trend. Thankfully, he shouldn't have to play in a meaningful game for a bit... so he can improve and make sure he's ready if he ever gets a chance.

 

In fairness, he earned the dog house... That play vs. the Seahawks was atrocious, and he never flashed anything in the limited opportunities he got. He even looked pretty meh in preseason too. I don't necessarily think he is in McCarthy's dog house... He might just not be cut out to be an NFL back.

 

I don't know for sure if he's in McCarthy's dog house, but why did he barely play in the Packers game? Could it be they know he sucks? I mean, the guy has shown nothing so far, and that's pretty disappointing for a 3rd round pick.

 

I said it was a great move at the time personally. The pick isn't entirely about a Stafford failsafe so much is it as a future pick. The hope is that LA doesn't see Ty Simpson until 2027.

 

I like Simpson in the draft process. He only lacked game experience. ( Few college stats )

Then what would you do with next year's draft? If there is a chance that we have the next franchise quarterback already on the team, we have to find that out ASAP.

I would rather see him play every down on the preseason, as opposed to parking him

 

Get a two-possession lead going into the 4th quarter and jam him in there for reps. Ah, two possession leads.... when was the last time we had that in games?

 

This is 100% true and I hate it when it happens, destroys a lot of young careers. But the Steelers have painted themselves into a corner here.

Mike McCarthy has completely transformed the offense and the play-calling. Everything I’ve read and heard says he pays extra attention to the details and demands a lot from the players. It’s his system, and the offensive results from his past years have been solid. He’s a good teacher as well, not just a scheme guy. He is both.

KJ would love to be in McCarthy’s doghouse—the same as any bubble roster player. It sure beats the alternative. I agree that he wanted to see the other RBs in the first preseason game. That was no accident.Today’s top coaches view training camp differently. A sharp contrast to Tomlin’s very Spartan approach. The fact that many players these days seem made of glass and get hurt easily is another story. McCarthy notices this and limits practice to no tackling. I think restricting live tackling to just two practices a week leading up to the first preseason game is part of the evolution of how depth charts are built and who ultimately makes the team. But Mike does not follow that path.In particular, this makes evaluations for the defensive line, linebackers, and safeties much harder.

Agreed! Sometimes it's difficult to learn from what you do see in the pre-season because you naturally watch the result rather than the process. I watched Howard and Allar to see if they left the pocket early, I watched to see if their eyes remained downfield when the pocket collapsed, I watched to see if they fixated on a receiver, I watched to see their release mechanics, and I watched to see how they threw on the run. It was all good!

But alas, it was pre-season game #1.

 

Especially so because of the lesson Rodgers is giving the young QBs:

The Pittsburgh Steelers have one quarterback telling another quarterback to stop watching the people he is supposed to throw the football to. Rodgers wants Allar's eyes elsewhere because the receivers are supposed to handle their own jobs. Once a route is called, the rookie should know where and when his target is expected to arrive. His attention can then shift toward the players who are actually capable of ruining the play.

For Allar, that means studying defenders rather than tracking a receiver through his route. Their alignment can hint at coverage. Their hips can expose which direction they are prepared to move. Their eyes can tell a quarterback whether they are reading him, carrying another player or turning their attention somewhere else. The football still ends up with the receiver, but Rodgers is teaching Allar to find the answer by studying everybody trying to prevent that from happening.

 

From everything I've heard, he lets the coordinators coordinate. He leaves the 1s and 2s on offense to the offensive coordinator, and spends his time with the 3s and 4s so that he can be hands on with Howard and Allar 100% of the time.

Decided to check. Not one drafted rookie qb threw an interception week 1, in around 100 throws. Only Taylen Green didn't play, so last year's Browns rookies threw two interceptions.

We both are in agreement about the pick. We are also in agreement about the silliness of the fallout of not selecting another position. I stated similarly during the pick after the draft.

 

And .... they are already pretty well positioned for a SB run this year and maybe next? It's not like they had a gaping hole.

 

Not having a contingency plan at QB is what I would consider a Contending Team Destroying issue. Finding WR anymore is almost as easy as finding loose change. Granted, some WRs will definitely be better than others but the amount of talent at thar position just grows and grows over time. Thank the NFL for making the league pass happy.
