Does this mean we can stop complaining about this trade now?

He's probably one of the better backups in the league.

If someone has a QB go down, maybe they can get a day 3 pick for him...or at least a pick swap or something.

He's not a starter. But he's shown that he can come in cold off the bench and play at an acceptable level. Which is exactly what you want from a backup. Or maybe a transitional guy to play in front of a high pedigree rookie for part of a season.

I needed to see Allar hit those layup throws he was often accredited to missing often. Still has some work to do but he is much improved from his Penn State days. Howard needs to work on speeding up resetting his base on his throws. If he can do that?! That will yield major dividends.

I'm pleasantly surprised by how he looked tonight.

Hope he continues with the momentum.

I am interested to see if they change the order we bring the QBs in so we see Allar against the opponents 2nd D and Howard against the 3rds.

I'd say a 6th at best, but I'll take that over nothing.

    Me and you both.

The arm wasn't going to be the issue for me. How he would look in terms of dealing with pressure from a mechanics standpoint and feathering his touch on his throws is what I was looking forward to from him; his command of the huddle and how well he would carry himself on a snap to snap basis.

So far so good. Just has to keep that up.

Early projections on where Allar ends up on the all time TD list 1 - 5?

    I'll go a conservative 3.

Leave me alone. It's been a long time since I've had any hope in a young Steeler's qb.

George Pickens may start complaining about the trade if this offense starts slinging the rock.

Pickens will have to settle for garbage time, when Prescott gets most of his yards, and be blamed for not catching those dirtballs in critical moments.

    For now.

Having a BU QB is a lot more important in today's NFL than others are willing to give it credit for. Given how teams are already going down quickly with injuries, just a matter of time before fate yields its reward. Even if it doesn't, Pittsburgh still wins as Mason can steer the ship.

Remember in 2023 when Pickett fell apart that Mason had a pretty damn good run. He is now in a situation where the play calling and the weapons are either better or much better. I hope A Rod doesn't go down but if he does, Mason would be up at bat.

Gotta love we saw from the QB talent perspective tonight, and from McCarthy's passing game.
Offensive line needs work both in run blocking and pass pro, it was subpar.

I’ve head it over and over since hiring Big Mike but that truly WAS QB University on display out there in this Exhibition. Yes sir, indeed it was. Each one brought their own unique style and experience to display and all three RAN their offense, never mind the throws, they RAN their offense almost like they’ve been schooled to do so

    Wow!

Any idea on the injury to WR Brandon Smith?

I am rewatching the 2nd half of the game, and they announce that Brandon Smith has been ruled out around 9 Minutes left to go in the 3rd QTR. Before Drew Allar came in.

Don't know about Brandon Smith but Bernard and Skowroneck played well, good to have depth

Just asked Grok about keeping 4 qbs:

"Yeah, after that performance tonight, the case for keeping all four just got stronger.
Allar looked sharp in his debut — 10-of-13 for 154 yards, two passing TDs, and a rushing score. Howard was efficient too (7-of-9, 86 yards) and handled the two-minute drill cleanly. Rudolph was solid as usual (10-of-11, 93 yards). None of them played themselves off the roster.
McCarthy has already said he doesn’t know why they wouldn’t keep four, and the Post-Gazette (and others) have been floating it as a real possibility for a while. With Rodgers in his final season and two young guys who haven’t taken a regular-season snap yet, cutting Rudolph to go with pure youth behind a 42-year-old feels risky. Keeping the veteran as the reliable No. 2 while developing both Howard and Allar makes sense in this specific situation, even if it’s unusual.
Roster spots are always tight, but this feels like one of those years where the Steelers might just do the unconventional thing. We’ll see how the next couple of preseason games shake out"

    Just saw the highlights…

Looked like Boykin had a really nice game. He can cover a lot of ground quickly, and had his nose in a lot of plays.

Allar has a Howitzer attached to his arm, wow. He can easily flick a ball 30-40 yards.

Howard had a really nice 2-minute drill score at the end of the half.

Both QBs clearly belong in the NFL, the future is bright.

    i don't think they'll keep 4 QBs.
    Complicated decision.
perhaps dead cap is an issue. Mason's is 1.6 mill. Allar's is 1.6 mill. Howard's is 62,000.
perhaps put howard on practice squad? risky since he might get picked up by another team. risky because he might just not re-sign with the steelers the team that just cut him.
i don't think Allar's going to the practice squad. I'm starting to think Allar wasn't a perfect fit in Penn State's RPO offense. He's better than that. He's more of a Matt Stafford strong armed pocket passer. Attaboy to MM for figuring it out.
Do you cut the only veteran back up QB? risky.
Your thoughts now that the packers game is over?

Steelers aren’t really in cap danger are they?

Can they get rid of some of the dead cap hit for Rudolph in a trade?

Got to be honest, I like the young guys. At the very least, I think you need to keep all 4.

i was impressed by allar and howard. i know howard didn't look quite as on as allar did, but its been over a year since he has actually seen game action. rudolph didn't look bad either but it seems like allar and howard would look down field more often than rudolph did.

that being said, no one did play their way off the roster. but, i would like to see allar on the field before howard next game to see what happens when the competition being faced is a little better. to see how the two of them look in a different order.

even though rudolph didn't look bad i am still in the camp of keeping two younger QBs over him simply because one of them or possibly both of them will get better. i doubt rudolph will get better than he already is and i don't think allar or howard is really that far behind him.

but alas, this was only one preseason game. next game they both might suck and rudolph looks like the second coming...so who knows?

I don’t think Mason is good enough to just keep because he’s experienced. If Howard and Allar play the same way they did tonight, then there’s no reason to keep Mason around IMO. Both Howard and Allar had a better feel of the pocket, made some plays downfield, and both are athletic enough to extend plays. The most impressive plays to me were Howard’s near TD as he stepped up in the pocket and hit the middle of the field for a big play… and Allar’s throw with a free rusher coming towards him. It was just a slant, but a really impressive play.

Mason is okay, but if we feel like both young guys are projecting upwards, then I’d be fine rolling without Mason. He’s an okay player, he’s just too much of a statue that struggles with his pocket awareness.
