Indeed. The last 10 games show that the Dog Days, once again, have possessed this team in spite of the once mighty offense and putrid relief and certain starting pitching. Now they've all looked in the mirror and saw reality. No need to make any high priced changes for now. Was fun while it lasted. Too many key injuries. Next!

 

Less than 2 hours to the trade deadline. With two decent bullpen arms and a third baseman or OF who hits left handed pitching well, this team could have been good. Chen Berrington didn’t do a bad job, just an incomplete one. Injuries have ruined things too: Cruz, Griffin, Horwitz (most consistent hitter over the last two seasons). Cruz and Horwitz coming back soon. My money says that's the end of the line for Ozuna. They will need roster space.

 

Not that it really matters right now but Horwitz returned yesterday and was 0-4 with 2 K's. This is likely how things will be when Cruz and eventually Griffin return. Lots of rust. There's no magic or chemistry right now, especially when Skenes (this year) and Keller (for a long time) suck so bad. I'd put Keller on that outgoing bus that Ozuna will occupy pronto, nothing worth saving spaces on the roster for them. Make some call ups from Indy. Ride out into the sunset hoping for a great all around 2027 with the pieces you mention.

 

Weaver!!! They got Luke Weaver from the Amazin’s for Sammy Stafura, an A ball SS who they got for Ke’Bryan Hayes last year….

 

Well Weaver was on the highest payroll team in MLB and will now come to a better record team with a third of the Mets payroll.

 

A healthy Bucs team getting Weaver would give me some hope. Not sure this will make a big difference as we seemed to be in disarray at the moment.

I think you have to consider the pitching coach's role in Skenes fall from Grace.

I know that I stated before that I read he tinkers with too many types of pitches and that could be a problem, but there has to be other contributing factors. I read recently that he has thrown something like 70% fewer pitches under 95mph compared to the last 2 years. If this is injury or fatigue related and they continue running him out there, that's insane. Or, is it part of the new plan to protect him? Trying to increase his pitch count by taking the velocity down? (by the way, it's not working) With the exception of Ashcraft, no other starter is carrying their share of the load, and the bullpen doesn't even have words to describe what the h$!! happened.

For that many pitchers to fall off a cliff, at the same time, makes me think the pitching coach and his philosophies may be involved in the downfall.

I don’t pay much attention to the games any more so I did not know that Horwitz had returned. I hope the acquisition of Weaver will goose things up a bit.
