When you came up with these names, how did you define who was in what coaching tree?

To a degree, I think coaching trees are a thing of the past. Good assistants and position coaches move along too frequently now so it'd hard to say they learned it all from a former head coach.

Tomlin inherited good coaches from the Cowher regime that he did not hire (LeBeau and Arians), and a very strong core of players he did not draft (Ben, Troy, Hines, Faneca, Smith, Hampton, Harrison, Porter, and Taylor). Once those coaches moved on and the players aged out, the playoff wins dried up.

From 2017–2025 seasons he hired his own coaches and drafted his own players. That was his chance to prove himself without the inherited pieces — and he was found lacking. How much power Tomlin had in the draft is debatable ( a fair amount, in my view ), but aside from Watt, most of of hist first round picks did not reach their fifth year with the Steelers. The coaching-tree argument is not silly, unless you think hiring your own OC and DC which the head coach primarily does is unimportant. These men are on his staff.

A coaching tree shows the successful coaches a head coach hired who later got promoted to head-coach jobs by other teams. That is a strong sign they were good hires. Those Tomlin-hired coaches were average to poor from 2017–2025.

Not much different that Tomlin.2 of the last 3 playoffs win by Tomlin was against backup QB.At least the Pats take advantage of that and make to the super bowl with a team who was 4-13 the 2 previous years

Belichick has at least a coaching tree.Tomlin has none...Several coaches under Belichick have been great assistant during their career, with or without Belichick

Tomlin = Switzer......... but with a longer NFL career. Both inherited juggernaut teams. Both inherited great OC's and DC's.

While I agree that it's hard to say they learned anything from a former head coach, that head coach still has to hire or promote good coordinators, assistants and position coaches. How many good ones did Tomlin hire/promote? It was a pretty mixed bag for coordinators I think. I guess Arians (hired then later "retired") and Haley were the good coordinators. But then you can throw in some real stinkers like Canada, Fichtner & Butler.

Regardless of why the good coaches he had may have left, they left. They may have had totally unrelated reasons for leaving, they may have left because they saw the wring on the wall, they may have left because they didn't agree with his style, they may have been pushed out, but they all left and we may never know why.

He replaced them with complete garbage .....Randy Fichtner, Mike Sullivan, Matt Canada, Arthur Smith, Keith Butler, Teryl Austin.

I think the best comparaison for Tomlin is George Seifert....You can win a super bowl with him as head coach when the team is already established and can be successful for 5-6 years before things start to regress

Switzer was already a disaster after its 4th year,he was outcoached like crazy by Cowher in the second half of the super bowl XXX.The cowboys could not move the ball in the second half.He need to thank O'Donnell for this super bowl!

In defense of Siefert... he won 2 Super Bowls with 49ers and 2 different QBs in Montana and Young. The '94 49ers, unlike the '08 Steelers compared to '05 Steelers, had only a few players (Rice, etc) that were on the '89 49ers. The '94 49ers are ranked one of the greatest NFL offenses of all time... and Siefert deserves some praise for that. Siefert did bomb with the Panthers... no doubt about that.

If people dont like the term coaching tree, fine.

Put it another way, Tomlin was so atrocious at assembling staffs that no one gets hired when they leave here unless it was an established coach before they got here like Haley and Smith.

I think it was Tomlins worst trait. You need good people underneath you.

Yeah, Tomlin is a much better coach than Switzer. I like the Seifert comparison better but I would have Seifert ranked higher.

I also think it was part of the people that follow football wanting to create dynasties for certain coaches.

So if you had lunch with Parcells one time and ended up doing anything in the NFL or college, you got adopted into the coaching tree to feed the legend.

Kinda like Ray Lewis' stats, if he was on the field, he got credited for the tackle.

IMO, Tomlin was an average coach. The winning seasons streak (and two .500 seasons, 2012, 2013) don't mean anything to me, personally. Cowher and Noll had losing seasons... but they were both obviously better coaches than Tomlin. This is my opinion... and I know there's people here who disagree with me. :smiley1:

Like I said before, the statement that Tomlin was a good coach because he had 19 "non-losing" seasons is made in a vacuum. With the talent he had to work with, non-losing is ****ty coaching!

But, he is the founding, and only, member of the NLHOF Non Losing Hall Of Fame.

I think Joe Gibbs being the only member of "3DQSWHOF" is far more impressive. Three Different Quarterbacks, Super Bowl Winning HOF! :lolol:
