I think it will be interesting to see what McVay's entire career looks like.

It would have also been interesting to see Tomlin coach a team that throws caution to the wind re: cap management too.

For now, these guys are comparable IMO. It will depend on what the rest of McVay's career looks like. We saw how Reid's career went from good coach to great coach when he benefited from the fact that people can't scout QBs for the NFL.

McVay basically admitted that he didn't think he could win with the guy he developed (who's been really good in DET). So I'm not sure what his level of confidence will be after he loses Stafford (who will also end up in the Hall of Fame IMO...maybe not 1st ballot, which is where I think Ben should go).

Stafford is currently 500 yards ahead of Ben on the all time list.

He's currently 38 and about 7-8k yards behind Manning for 3rd overall.

He's ~ 16k yards behind Brees for 2nd (and another 9k behind Brady).

Like Brees, he's a very good QB who deserves to be in the Hall. I personally think Ben is better. But it looks like there are several posters here who disagree in the Ben vs. Brees thread.

I never see you make this many excuses for the Steelers considering all the injuries the Killer Bs had in the playoffs .

Not saying you're making this argument, but if we're taking away SB appearances that happened because the QB who got them there was drafted by the previous HC, Cowher loses one too.

O'Donnel wasn't in Ben's league. But the offense he led that year was great...until that last game.

I never blamed Tomlin for the playoffs loss in 2014 and 2015......

I believe McCarthys Texas Coast incorporates both McVay and Shannahan style offenses into his.

Apparently he spent the year away fine tuning his approach. We’ll see how that translates to this season.

Must be a fluke that he developed Goff so well he not only traded him away, but two 1st round , and a 3rd round draft pick for a Qb already Developed. LoL

You keep you stupid playoff wins.
    SBs matters.
2 SBs apiece, both lost one , and won one, and one didn't have to trade away 9 first round picks for players already developed.

Anyone that says a HC that has traded away 9 first round picks for players that were already developed, and has won the exact same amount of SBs as Tomlin , and thinks he is way better clearly has an agenda.
    Tomlin: 2 SBs, 1 win

McVay: traded away 9 first round draft picks for players already developed by other HCs 2 SBs , 1 win.
Yeah he's so much better. LoL
Sorry fact mean little to you ,but hey feelings. LoL

Tomlin somehow took a Qb that just came off his 3rd year in the NFL, but didn't develop him, and yet McVay took a 12 year vet , and somehow developed him.
    You are a f**king hypocrite

Yes I would have like to see how we would have done with trading away 9 first round draft picks , and that's not counting the 2nd, and 3rd rounds for player already developed like McVay has done.
Can't wait to hear the McVay lovers tell me how he developed M. Garrett, and T. McDuffie this year. LoL

    It's a different system.

To be fair to McVay (and their front office), I was really impressed with how they've bounced back into contention here. I assumed that they'd get crushed by the cap after they kind of shot their wad to get the championship once they moved to LA.

I think it will be interesting to see what happens post-Stafford for him.

It is funny how some still seem to think Goff is bad because McVay threw him under the bus (and off the team) after they couldn't score in the SB.

But he wasn't a product of the system and has been at least as good in his 5 years in Detroit as his 5 years with McVay [ETA: 5 years with the rams, only 4 years with McVay...he had 7 starts as a rookie before McVay got there]. Although he's had 82 starts in DET and 69 with the Rams (62 with McVay)

Detroit values on the left, numbers with Rams on the right.
    • Yards: 21,451 to 18,171
    • TDs: 149 to 107
    • INT: 47 to 55
    • TD%: 5.3% to 4.4%
    • INT%: 1.7% to 2.3%
He's an above average QB. Probably not elite, but very good. And still probably has lots of time left.

We would love to have Goff under center in Pittsburgh IMO. Although he wouldn't get the same numbers here.

Without looking, I wonder how many people would correctly guess how many playoff games we played where Ben, Bell, and Brown started and ended the game healthy...or even just started if people want to count the AFCC game against the Pats where Bell played ~ 20 snaps / 6 carries / 0 receptions?

Hint #1: they all started 3 games in the 2016 playoffs (WC, DIV, AFCC). Bell left that game pretty early. So we could count this as 2 games or 3 games.

So how many other playoff games did all three of them play in.

    Hint #2:

    • Bell was the last one drafted. He was on the Steelers from 2013 - 2017 (5 years).

This, and I agree. Im not saying McVay isn't a good HC, Im try to point out facts, and show how McVay isn't a greater HC than Tomlin.
    Put it this way.
Tomlin got a Qb that just came off his 3rd year in the NFL, a Qb that clearly didn't win His SB because he was scoring a lot of points to say the least, and yet Tomlin haters will say He had nothing to do with his Development......Yet....
McVay gets a young Qb can't win a SB with him, trades him away, and 2 first round picks, and a 3rd for a 12 year vet that had multiple seasons of over 30 tds, and 4000 yards passing, and even a 5000 yard passing season before he ever went there, and yet they want to credit McVay for developing him. LoL
    It hypocrisy

    I don't disagree with you.

One thing I'm interested in kind of trying to follow is how many of the "Tomlinisms" stick around for the long term.

For example, talking about the 2nd year jump is something that I don't think we did before he was here...it was far more likely to talk about sophomore slumps IMO.

When old guys get the day off, will reporters still talk about "contusions of the birth certificate"?

    That kind of stuff.

Any casual NFL football fan who isn't wearing rose-colored, black and gold Steelers glasses will agree that McVay is a much better HC than Tomlin. The proof is in the record. Tomlin has a very poor, losing playoff record. McVay on the other hand has a winning record... and won twice as many as he's lost.

Why the game he won on the road in Denver don't count for you?...Just to make Cowher look bad?

I learned how to cherry pick stats and numbers from you, like your favorite from 2020 when you dismiss the 11-0 record and only focus on the last 5 games to make Tomlin look bad ;).

I mean,96 games is 6 seasons of 16 games per season and this is not a small sample size. The steelers were a .500 team since that time or just above(49-46-1 including the playoffs)
