Especially when in his case I think they're mostly "on air" or at best with out contact.

We know basically nothing about Howard.

    Hopefully he pans out.

It is going to come down to Howard entirely. We know what we have in Mason, and its not a whole lot. He's an okay back up... If Howard can show a level of promise, then I think Mason is getting the axe. If Howard struggles, then we will likely see him get cut and try to stash on the PS.

If he plays one series exactly how does that count as “beating”

    What if the Steelers lose

Do you happen to have rubles laying around

On a team with a competent defense Rudolph has proven he can win half his starts. His ceiling might not be much higher but that's why he is a backup.

Preseason game are complete waste of time...This is always against very vanilla defense(with a vanilla offense for your team)and this is against players who will be out of the NFL when the preseason will be over.We learn nothing about preseason, good or bad

Our 2019 defense was the best steelers defense in the last 15 years(after the Fitzpatrick trade) and this is not close....Even Delvin Hodges was able to win 3 games with this defense

If he can win half his starts that is a good backup to have

Half the starters don’t win half of their starts

Last season 62 quarterbacks had a won/loss record

Only 22 had a winning record

It is funny, the only time I have ever heard McCarthy compliment Mason's arm was when Mason and Howard were both practicing together. :)

Having Mason throw after Howard even made Mason's arm standout.

Steelers coach Mike McCarthy indicates that the decision to have Will Howard take QB2 reps during OTAs is because veteran Mason Rudolph "has seen a lot of football" and therefore doesn't need the reps.

"Mason has impressed me. He throws the ball better than I thought."

This is true to a point. The 2023 preseason is a prime example of this. Pickett looked like the 2nd coming of Joe Montana during preseason... only to crash down to earth vs 49ers in home opener. Still... Howard and Allar need to get as many snaps as possible even if it's against vanilla D's.

How tough is the NFL on QBs? Consider that quarterback ratings can drop 50% or more from college to pros.

    Screenshot 2026-07-28 101527.png

What does this mean for Allar and Howard?

Are they more like Roethlisberger or Rudolph? Just taking the average drop from the above we can predict where they might end up:

    Screenshot 2026-07-28 101711.png

That's a bit sobering for even the biggest fans.

How is that talking out of both sides of my mouth.
Are you actually trying to say a whole year of practice, and 8 preseason games equals no preseason games, and no practice???

I think it's not good for evaluating guys you think will start.

But I also think that preseason games are likely invaluable for back of the roster guys. Especially low pedigree guys who probably don't get many chances to show they can make an impact.

I think reducing the number of preseason games probably helped established vets at the end of the roster at the expense of young guys at the end of the roster.

It was idiotic that the league was basically selling tickets to these games like they were regular season games (I think that's what they do).

I think it would have been better for teams if they kept the extra games, but put a limit on the number of snaps you can play vested vets (or some other criteria for guys who've played in the league enough). Then you still give the established guys the benefit of injury protection by reducing the football they play. But you don't take the opportunity to shine away from younger guys trying to scratch their way to a spot on the PS or the back of the roster.

The starting QB gets credit for the win or loss, regardless of how many plays they run or if a backup finishes the game. Unlike Major League Baseball, where relief pitchers can be awarded a win based on the score when they enter, the NFL does not use a situational relief rule. [1, 2, 3]

An excellent example of this is September 11th, 2023 with (ironically), Aaron Rodgers. They played the Bills, Rodgers was injured after the first 4 plays and left the game. Rodgers went 0/1, had no stats and no scores......but he gets credit for the win because he started (https://www.statmuse.com/nfl/ask/new-york-jets-record-with-aaron-rodgers). It ends up being 1 of the 6 wins that Rodgers got while with the Jets. (went 6W, 12L).

If they lose, he still played and I win the bet!

You can buy paper rubels on Ebay, but i don't anticipate needing any......lol

The argument is that the Steelers went into a season without an experienced BU QB. Dobbs never took a snap in a real game. You moved the goalposts to say Dobbs has more experience than Howard which by the way, where did you get that Howard didn’t practice with the team last year? He was activated Oct 22nd. He got reps, ran the scout team and sat in every meeting as well as being in Rodgers back pocket all year. But it doesnt matter because none of that changes the original argument.

Both had the same amount of real game experience which is zilch. That is the very definition of going into a season with a BU with no experience.

    No this is not correct

They may be a waste of your time

32 teams know how to use them

And…..Do you know why they run a vanilla offense and defense

He singled out Mason as running the 2nd team offense, so Mason has to be happy. :)

He then said something like "The Kids" will be finishing up with the 3rd team. McCarthy also mentioned that he has used only 3 QBs in camp. This is why looking at his 2024 Preseason camp, Dak received no Reps, Vet Backup Cooper Rush had 6 passing attempts, and "The Kid", Trey Vance had 113 passing attempts. There was no #4 string QB to play.

Look for Allar to get some serious reps during preseason.
