I would take Ben over Brees but that guy Dameshek is a Steelers fan.

 

I would take Ben too. He's been to 3 Superbowls compared to one for Brees. Ben had to play twice a year against Ray Lewis, Suggs and company while Brees got to play against the NFC south. Brees played in a dome and in mostly warm weather while Ben battled the cold, sleet, snow and rain in the AFC North.

 

Brees has had years where he only played 2 games outside.
Ben is clearly the better Qb.
Hell every Tomlin sucks , and Sean Peyton is a genius guy should say this.

 

Give me Brees.

Super Bowls aren't just a QB only stat.

Brees has far more accolades and is the more accomplished of the two.

 

Well - Ben never had a losing season as the starting Quarterback. Funny no one mentions that.

 

Ben was the better QB, and not just because I'm a Steelers fan.

 

This is actually hard.
Ben is a 2-time Super Bowl winner in 3 appearances (should have had 3 wins)
And Ben has provided many highlights for the Steelers.

But Brees was so pinpoint accurate.
His missed passes, probably 50 or 60% of them were the receivers fault.
But he has 1 Super Bowl win.
My god, he has 80K yrds, a 67 wait, make that 68% completion percentage..
Against Brees, you could NOT rest on a 15 point lead with 2 minutes to go.

I'll take Ben. His highlight reels week after week consisted of some DT hanging off him while he tosses 1 of many TD passes, are insane.
So many clutch passes....

 

I am biased obviously, but I agree with this take. They're wildly different players as Brees was a pocket passer that had limited physical ability, so he relied on his reads, quick to intermediate passing, and his accuracy to become a great player. Ben had a lot of physical talent (big arm, size), but was more of a down field QB who would put himself in danger by holding onto the ball and "free wheeling" in order to fish for big plays. Both are relevant playstyles and both were great at what they did. They're hard to compare really, but I'd take Ben. I've said before I think Ben is a borderline top 10 QB of all time. He's certainly one of the most unique players at the position.

 

I think there's an element of "you had to be there" with Ben. The stats are just okay for the first five years or so. 6 pro bowls, no all-pro nods, was never really a factor in the MVP race. But all of that misses the intangibles and big time plays that he brought to the table. In a tight game, late in the 4th quarter, not sure if I'd take anyone over Ben, especially in those first 5-6 years. Need a play, he'd go get it for you. Pro Football Reference can't tell that story.

The 3rd and 28 conversion in SB XL is forever etched into my memory. And the TD on the QB keeper to end that drive. Obviously there's the Santonio TD in XLIII. The TD to Mike Wallace at the buzzer against GB in 2009.

Granted, Brees probably has a million clutch plays as well.

I remember in the Requiem for the Big East 30 for 30, talking Syracuse/Georgetown, Boeheim basically said there are other rivalries out there but this is my rivalry. I feel similarly about Ben. Who cares about the rankings. Ben is my QB.

 

Roethlisberger never played in a SB without a top 5 defense. Brees did. Brees was also robbed of a second SB.

 

So again, when debating Players, regardless of position, individual achievements matter more. Super Bowls help but the Super Bowl isn't won by one person. Takes the whole team.


Big Ben was Top 3 in his generation once, 2011. Even then, he didnt earn a single All Pro. Brees was countless times. Brees owns more NFL records and possesses more All Pro Awards.


In short?! Compare the players by their own standings and not outside factors. Brees was categorically a Top 3 QB during the prime of his career. Big Ben was not.


Hot Take: Big Ben was never the best Steeler during his Super Bowl years either.
