Gardner seems fragile. Porter's young, he's tough, and he removes the opponent's top threat.

I agree the Steelers need to pay the man. This one's easy.

    Strongly agree.

And I believe that it's as close to 100% as you can get.

But I think it will go right to the wire on time (like TJ's 2nd contract).

And in two years when the top cornerbacks are making close to $40 million per, fans will most likely look at his contract as a bargain based on his trajectory and still have three years left.

But...but...after stupidly caving to Watt, the Steelers need to use all of their leverage to keep the cost of Porter's deal down!

    No that is not correct

    Yes that is correct

Both contracts will be handled similarly

    Some of us understand this

Otherwise the world needs ditch diggers too

Steelers are already at 5th highest paid CB room in the league. I guess we may as well be tops in that position along with edge rushers.

Are you anticipating all of them being on the 53 at the end of camp

Or is this just Monopoly money now

Ramsey will likely be gone next season and if Dean is a bust they can get out of that contract after one year, no big deal to pay Porter Jr.

If we are within the cap limits we're good. We have more players on 2nd+ contracts on the defensive side of the ball. Most players on our offense are on rookie contracts. More than half of our cap should be getting spent on the defense, that just makes sense. Next season players will come off the books and new contracts will get made. None of this is carved in stone forever and permanent.

Add 10%-20% markup to this years asking price. Whatever that number is. That's most likely what JPjr will be asking for next year. If he is one of those players that grew up Steelers and never wants to play for another franchise, and is willing to take less than his market value, bonus to the Steelers. Doesn't make him worth less on the open market.

It doesn't really matter how much other Steelers players are being paid, their ages, injury history, or which side of the ball they play on. Joey Porter Jr's contract negotiation will only be about Joey Porter Jr and his worth to the organization.

If they want to sign Porter there is nothing hindering them

I suspect they will sign him before the season starts at a fairly negotiated contract

Although I’ve stated that clearly before

So swap Ramsey's pay for JPJ. Gonna need to find a cheap safety to balance it out.

    Just so I am clear

Are you suggesting they start a 7th round draft pick who has never played a down in the NFL at Safety

I can’t see anything that could possibly go wrong

If you mean, the only important part of this entire thread is what pertains directly to Joey Porter Jr, ie his play on the field, his willingness to negotiate with the team, and his current market value, the yes, it seems pretty simple.
Now, how any of that goes between player and management may or may not be so simple as that. Especially if his camp decides they want $1 more than the biggest CB contract, like some players have done in the past. I could see that scenario being rather sticky.

    Well yeah
    how much?
    top dollar?
    not yet in my opinion

    I'd give him a 2yr deal for 60M total
50 in pocket, rest in incentives

    best for both parties

So now the guy starts talking about it being Monopoly money, as if other posters aren't taking the concept of financial limits seriously. Never mind that he is the one who keeps insisting that overpaying Watt doesn't matter, all the while insisting that it is others who don't understand. We all see the contradiction.

Cue said poster trying to alter his argument yet again rather than stand by it, falsely claiming that others just don't understand.

    Rinse, repeat...regurgitate.

Once again, they're not paying a franchise QB might as well sign guys to extensions and build your team up.

I mean...it wouldn't be the first CB we signed in recent memory with legal troubles.

Sounds like this guy wasn't even on the lamb for a little bit.
