I didn't say that, but you can't let him get it elsewhere, and then 3 year down the line think, man I wish we got the deal done when we are still looking for a different CB

I know some don't like points, but someone tell me how many tds JPJ has given up since he's been here.

This is such an impressive thing IMO.

For context: Sauce Gardiner is an excellent CB. In his first 4 years he's given up 5 TDs. Over his first 3 years (where JPJ is now): Gardiner gave up 3 TDs. He was targeted 199 times in his first 3 years. Those targets led to 110 completions (55.3%) and 1325 yards. Passer rating when targeted (averaged by year, not by target) = 76.6. 1 sack. 40 PDs. 3 INTs. 6 TFLs. 26 accepted penalties for 268 yards. 15 accepted penalties for 172 yards.

Here are Porter's numbers: In 3 years: Porter has been targeted 215 times. He's given up 1 TD. He's also given up 116 completions (54.0%) for 1466 yards. Passer rating when targeted (averaged by year, not by target) = 71.2. 1 sack. 31 PDs. 3 INTs. 3 TFLs. 24 accepted regular season penalties for 254 yards.

And it's not like Porter is getting easy matchups either.

I'm not making the argument that Porter is better than Gardiner. But they appear to be pretty similar just looking at the numbers here. I think Gardiner is probably better.

Re: Penalties. Porter did better last year re: penalties (5 accepted / 42 yards). Last year isn't in the sample above for Gardiner. He had 4 accepted penalties for 51 yards. Pretty comparable last year anyway.

I think we're "lucky" that Porter doesn't have any individual honors. He's certainly good enough to be on a probowl team. Not having any PBs (or 1st / 2nd APs) should keep his value a little lower than it would be otherwise.

He's a very good CB IMO. And as Colbert used to say "Players only leave Pittsburgh when we let them leave". The team has control over Porter for at least the next 3 years. Which is why it really, really makes sense for him to take a 2nd contract with us so he at least gets the big SB up front.

Pay him now because it’s only going to get more expensive.

Would be gross roster mismanagement to let a CB like Porter get away when this team has struggled so much to find good talent there.

What's defining elite in your view?

Porter has more INTS and pass breakups than most of that group.

Any staff that doesn't highly vskue Porter shouldn't be coaching jv high school ball let alone the NFL.

I guess the next trick will be to predict that there will be a sunrise and a sunset tomorrow.
