That is not true. Their on field work is brief, but they spend nearly 40 hours a week preparing, reviewing etc

The NFL and commissioner created this monster, by not holding the refs accountable for bad calls and this can't be touched mentality. Now, the league wants to rectify these things and the refs are saying ... "no thanks"! The refs figure that they now have the power.

Plus the subjective nature of the crews make it hard for players to know what is and isn't going to be called. Some call an inadvertent arm touching the QB's head as roughing the passer while others allow the QB to be turned like a pretzel or get a broken nose with no call. They can target the illegal formation because a tackle is too far off the los but also allow DB's to mug WR'S well after the 5 yard chuck zone. All depends on the crew and how they feel about the teams playing.

I was watching the NCAA men's hockey tournament this weekend and in Sunday's Minnesota-Duluth vs Michigan game the bulldogs scored late in the third to make it 3-4 and Michigan challenged the goal for goaltender interference. I was sitting there screaming he never touched the goalie until the puck was already in the net. It was a brilliant play no need for review.

I think quality of refs and correctness of calls won't change the amount of complaining people do.

Because people who complain about refs complain when calls are made that are bad for their team, not because the call is bad. I say this as someone who sometimes complains about refs.

If improving the call correctness reduced complaining, then video review would have led to fewer complaints about calls. But I think it's done the opposite. This is why if I was kind of the NFL for a day, I'd dramatically reduce video replay.

Here's an article from 2023 talking about NFL officials and saying that almost all of them have other jobs.

    https://sports.yahoo.com/full-17-part-time-officiating-130702807.html

To make that much money from working for the NFL and still having all the time in the world for a full-time job is a joke. Much more time needs to be put into their craft, and they need to be present at a central location or locations to watch film, run simulations, work out, and work on their craft in every way possible so they are best prepared for officiating games.

It's time to make these officials a full-time position with a full slate of duties each and every day like everyone else has to do for their money. These people are making more money than many doctors, lawyers, CEO's, and the list goes on. It is beyond ridiculous to make that much money for a side gig without any accountability and limited daily responsibilities and training.

For a business that generated over $23 million in revenue in 2025, not creating the ultimate form of officiating for the sport is a disservice to everyone that watches it and invests time and money into it.

Is Rooney dumping this kind of money into the training facilities?

49ers Exploring Training Facility Relocation Near Levi’s Stadium After Wild Substation Injury Theory: Report

    Jun 23, 2026 | 5:33 PM EDT

The San Francisco 49ers have been pushing the limits of their current setup in the hopes of reaching the Super Bowl. They need to manage and prevent injuries to their stars year after year, and something big needed to happen to help with that. Under the leadership of new CEO Al Guido, the 49ers are looking at bringing a major change in Santa Clara. The Niners are contemplating moving to a new practice facility nearby – a move that lines up with all the money it has already poured into the building.

The Athletic’s Vic Tafur sat down with Al Guido for an interview recently, and reported that the 49ers have “put a lot of money into the weight room and hydrotherapy, as well as the locker room and cafe.” But they still need more room next to Levi’s Stadium to expand operations. And all of it comes with a singular goal attached.

“Everything is geared to winning the Super Bowl,” Guido told Tafur. “We have been to three in the last 30 years and not won any. That’s the appetite with everyone here, and this is the right time to do it. In talking to our fans, I think they feel that, too.”

The #49ers are reportedly exploring a possible nearby relocation of their practice facility, as they are running out of space at and next to Levi’s Stadium, per @VicTafur

The Niners are moving because they keep adding more pieces to their operation, and the campus is starting to feel a little cramped for what they want out of it. Recovery, training, workflow, and daily space – everything adds up when a team wants to be in the title mix every year.

The 49ers haven’t announced any potential destinations yet, but a new practice facility isn’t all they’re going after this year. After Super Bowl LX’s success, Guido is also pushing for more upgrades at Levi’s Stadium so Santa Clara can host more Super Bowls.

“We have to make sure the stadium continues to be upgraded,” Guido said, “but since NFL partners, specifically their media partners, reside in this region – YouTube, and Netflix, and Apple – I think it’s fair to say that we should be hosting multiple Super Bowls after Super Bowl 60.”

This push to expand around Levi’s Stadium also explains why the substation chatter around the facility got so much attention. Last season, Peter Cowan, a board-certified clinician, put forth a theory that the emissions from a substation near the Niners’ practice facility were the reason why the Niners roster kept getting injured week after week.
“The 49ers are statistically one of the most injured teams over the past decade,” Cowan told EssentiallySports in an exclusive interview. “The fans call it the curse of Levi’s Stadium.”

“They won so much in the 80s and 90s, and the fans have been frustrated for the past decade,” Cowan added. “So, there are a lot of theories as to why their injury rates are so high, and none of them really panned out because other teams have those things too. And the only thing that I could find that was different was this electrical substation that sits right behind their facilities and likely emits a very strong AC magnetic field.”
