Star Trek at least had a healthy run. The cancellation that really got under my skin was Firefly. It's so hard to find good scifi, and in those rare shows where they get the balance of things right the suits inevitably shut them down.

Winner. Same here. Although I just read that he was the actual reason the show stopped, because He was fatigued by the schedule. Remember back then a series had 20, or more episodes a season. Hell most series today only do 8-12 episodes a season now.
Hell the original Star Trek did 79 episodes in 3 seasons. Way different how they did it then. It would take most shows today 7-8 years to do that many.

Only because they made so many episodes each season for a series. They only lasted 3 seasons, but series back then did 20 , or more episodes a season back then. Star Trek lasted 3 season, and did 79 episodes. Kolchack The Night Stalker was only one season, and had 20 episodes. Can You imagine if they did shows like that now with 20 ,or more episodes a season. LoL

Man, I loved that show as a kid. I don’t remember much other than it was spooky. There are episodes on YouTube.

I think I heard that they were bringing back an animated version? Maybe I dreamed it though...

My wife and I liked watching Pushing Daises, which was cancelled early IMO.

And for my kids...we really liked Star Trek Prodigy. I think it's the only new Star Trek series worth watching. Was a spin off of Voyager in some sense. Cancelled first by Paramount (maybe Nickelodean?). Resurrected by Netflix. Then cancelled there too. We did buy the whole Next Generation series though. We'll watch it all, but first we're working our way through the animated Star Wars stuff (Clone Wars, then Rebels, then at least Bad Batch).

I had never seen anything like it at the time. I thought the entire idea of the show was very unique and it was really well done in a time when visual effects weren't fully developed. The stories had to be good, and the idea of this reporter that was a modern-day monster hunter was incredible to me.

I still think about that show and wish there was something like it today.

I was a big X-Files fan, but so much of that also involved government conspiracies and coverups. My favorite episodes were almost always the one-off episodes about a creature or other phenomenon that was discovered after a deep investigation. Just like the Night Stalker episodes that were mostly stand alone.

I really liked the way that they had Kolchak tell a story. He narrated these episodes as they went along, and I really liked that style.

Knowing that scary stuff was upcoming made it somehow build the horror even more.

I may have to watch that entire video at some point today!

My wife and I have watched a few seasons of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, and some of the episodes have been damn good. Sometimes they try to hard, but sometimes they give you a bit of the old Star Trek feel when they keep things simple and the interactions of the characters mesh well with the plot lines and they don't force an idea.

The made for TV movie that started it all was really good. The Night Stalker. One of the creepiest Vampires. I think they just ran out of monster ideas.

Hmm. I never watched them , and so I didn't know that. Most of the series I watch from today's time is 12 episodes at most, and many are only 8.

It was no dream. Nathan Filion announced the plan earlier this year. They have the original cast, showrunners, scripts, and an animation studio lined up. They did not have a confirmed home for the series and I haven't heard anything since.

Based on everything you say you enjoy watching I am fairly certain you would like little of what I watch

This might explain why tv expanded from 3 channels

While I like the original, HBO's remake of Westworld was binge- worthy. Some outstanding writing.

X-Files, Star Trek TNG and Star Trek Voyager were the best shows I watched in the 90's, IMO. I watched Deep Space Nine about a decade after it's release... and it's my favorite of ALL the Star Trek series to this day.

Deep Space Nine is among my favorite shows of any genre. It was unique among Star Trek shows in its focus and tone, especially when it focused later seasons on the Dominion War. Ronald Moore was one of the writers who helped The Next Generation find its footing, then he was the lead writer on DS9. He was also one of the creators behind the remake of Battlestar Galactica, which was mostly excellent.

The only Star Trek live action series I couldn't get into was Discovery. The first 2 seasons were good, but it went downhill after that, IMO. The "Burn" event kinda ruined things for me. I like the new ones on Paramount.... Strange New Worlds and Starfleet Academy. Enterprise with Archer/Bakula was underrated and ended too soon... wish they could have done more with it.

There is an official announcement that a Firefly animated series set between the events in the series and the movie will happen. I will believe it when I see it. https://deadline.com/2026/03/nathan-fillion-firefly-animated-series-development-1236754122/

Think animated was the way to go. Everyone got too old for it to be how we wanted it to be as fans.

For Trek, I really like the one with Captain Pike and Spock....Brave New Worlds? I found myself liking it way more than I thought....since we know how it has to end. But the journey has been worth it so far. The one with the disgraced captain who punches weird looking Klingons and there's some new warp tech that might actually be reality hopping.....you can see how much I've been paying attention....is not Star Trek as we all know it - despite the title. It is decent sci-fi though. I see it now in Heinz's post. "Discovery".

But back to Firefly....this show will always be incredible because it brought us this:

I never got past the first episode of the most recent season of Strange New Worlds. My brother-in-law keeps telling me I should check out Starfleet Academy. I may watch it at some point, but knowing it has already been cancelled limits my enthusiasm. I never watched Discovery.

I didn't mind Enterprise, though the finale was awful.

Starfleet was cancelled by the "new" management at Paramount who are sympathetic to the President-Emperor and his movement. Had nothing to do with ratings, quality of the show... or any of that. Similar to Colbert situation. Hell... if the ratings were so bad, they wouldn't have even made a 2nd season. All political.
