Pirates are presently on track to win 88 games. I’ll believe that when they make a few changes.
Time to cut loose Ozuna and find better bullpen help. The Pirates seemed to be able to come up with adequate closers in the past, now would be a very good time to do it again.

Past practices are keeping me weary. Another message board I'm on has had a "Salary Dump" thread for years. Generally at the trade deadline Bob likes to cut the payroll. Maybe things will be different his season???

 

Arrighetti has been their best pitcher this season, but he's far from an established ace. Based on what I have read, the underlying metrics don't support that ERA. Their ace is Hunter Brown, but he's on the IL.

 

Well maybe I should head over to Vegas today. The Buc bats overcame another less than stellar Bubba game with 3 HRs with runners on base accounting for 8 of their 10 runs and Santana came in in a somewhat laugher and tried his best to give it away. Thankful for Soto closing it out with 2 final Ks. Dotel did an excellent job holding down the fort for 3 scoreless innings. Looks like it's time to move Santana out to pasture, he's lost his mojo for sure. Bubba is risky as well but with their new lineup (without Ozuna) they're pretty formidable. E-Rod and Gonzo are piling up the hits nicely - Gonzo is beginning to remind me of Freddy Sanchez a bit the way he sprays his hits all around. Nice start - hopefully the good Skenes shows up tonight and can keep it close and his pitch count down and make it through 6 or 7 innings. This seems (to me) the closest this team has assembled anything close to the Lightning and Lumber Co of the 70's. Lowe and finally Cruz are putting together nice seasons and stats for complete physical opposites. Keep it going fellows!

 

They aren’t doing the salary dump this season
They didn’t build this roster during the offseason to do that
You can go to Vegas and bet they don’t do that this season

 

Steel, I honestly think they will be buyers instead of dumping salaries this year. The reason is that they are in contention, and the 2027 season is a looming question mark because of the expiring CBA. Baseball overall would benefit from a salary cap like the NFL has. The players of course oppose it. Owners want one. It will be a big sticking point, and maybe everyone will be hard headed enough to put the season in jeopardy. So, 2026 may be it for this group of players.
Of course, Nutting’s past tendency to throw nickels around as if they are manhole covers could come into play again if they collapse down the stretch. But I think we will see a different Pirates team this year, due to unique circumstances.
