The Allar pick is a true disaster if they put him in the practice squad in his rookie year

why? thats what he needs. practice. once the season starts they don't have time during the week to mess with him. that's for game planning. he will be involved with that and meetings and still get some coaching along the way. howard didn't even get the few reps last year on IR. he's come flying out of the gate. allar will receive more than howard even off the PS.

Because the other teams in the NFL can take the players who are on the practice squad,so they can lose him for good....And when was the last time in the NFL that a player who was drafted in the 3rd round was on waiver in his rookie year before the season start?

Allar would need to be just awful with no hope for the future to be in this situation

they have broken him down to middle school level. how has he earned a spot on the 53 so far? will teams want aa guy on the 53 that they have to completely start over with when they could get one in the draft or off the free agent list that is farther along. even as ben said, the 3 step drop is the first and most basic thing taught when a kid is in grade school. do you want that on your 53 man roster? just potential can get a coach fired. i think he would be pretty safe for now. if he improves we can add him. i don't see him improving enough this year to be of any help to us right now. do you think mccarthy will put his career on the line for a 3rd round pick? we can draft again next year or we see improvement. we drafted rudolph in the 3rd round too. howard looks like the guy that looks to be the next guy up and allar may or may not be his backup. we shall see.

McCarthy will not put his job on the line if Allar is the 3rd QB of this team....We can put Rudolph on the PS without much risk to lose him(see post 279) and if we have injuries we can put Rudolph on the 53 man roster after that.If Allar is on the waivers or practice squad, this draft pick is a true disaster

Allar will not be placed on PS. Even though once there he can be protected from getting poached, he would never clear the waivers to make it to PS in the first place. QBs just have that much value. Some team would claim him off waivers.

If he did make it to the PS, he could then be protected from other teams poaching him. This part is true. I just don't think he would get there. "Hey, free QB for the claiming!!!", I don't think we make this move.

If another team takes him they have to put him on the roster. Are you afraid another coach can do better than McCarthy if McCarthy believes he needs a year on the PS?

I know that....But the question, how many times a 3rd round pick was cut as rookie before the season start?

I'm wasting my time with this discussion because it's very unlikely that will happen... If he were a 5th or 6th round pick, it would be a different story, but a 3rd round pick would be historically bad.

Man...some of you all are taking these offseason reports WAY too literally. Allar may or may not be the guy, but he isn't landing on a PS as a 22 year old 3rd pick that has ZERO expectations for this season.

Cut and practice squad are the same thing....You need to be on waiver before to hit the PS

A bit of semantics; "cut" meaning the team has no further use of you. "waive" is a transactional thing to move a player they might still want.

(btw, I agree that there is probably near zero chance the Steelers try to put Allar on the PS.)

Rudolph is definitely the best choice to clear waivers.

If I were his representation I'd be telling him to focus on showing as well as possible in the camp scrimmages and preseason game snaps. Whatever he gets be ready, as it's going to be his audition for his next gig. If he gets one.

Might not ever get to see what Allar can do if Howard seizes the opportunity first.

Sometimes being versatile means you're really not that great at anything....

"Benton will be entering the last year of his rookie contract in 2026. The 6’4, 309-pound defender recorded a career-high 5.5 sacks last season.

“(Benton will) definitely be playing some nose,” Peko clarified, but it might not be exclusive. “Like I said, he can play any position on the D-line. We’re gonna mix and match and see what’s best for him.”

Peko was asked what made Benton a strong candidate for 3-tech, 4i, or 5-tech. “I feel like he’s super stout and strong at the point of attack. But what really separates him is his quickness, man,” he said. “(Benton) has really good lateral quickness, and then as far as going from B to A or A gap to B gap, he’s really good with his movements — so that’s kind of the things that separate him from our other guys, is his ability to use his quickness and get on the edge of somebody pretty quickly, and win.”"

Sure let’s write Allar off based on some no name posting clickbait during OTA

Allar and Howard will pretty evenly split camp snaps and preseason

You have watched football long enough to know they aren't cutting the quarterback they took in the third round this year, especially since they did it knowing he would be a project, so why do you keep posting this nonsense? You should also know they would have to cut him to put him on the practice squad, so that isn't going to happen, either.

This is probably the most logical solution. Have the QB room as Rodgers, Howard and Allar with Rudolph on the practice squad. That way if Rodgers gets injured then bring up Rudolph to be Howard's backup. Keep Allar as a 3rd teamer for basically his red shirt year. Some team would poach Howard or Allar off of our practice squad but no team would be tempted to pick up Mason Rudolph.

Not every team has a developmental quarterback on the roster.

Why does any HC keep a older Qb with NFL experience over a young Qb without any NFL experience??
