You have an idea, Tomlin is a high school J.V. coach, and would probably be on the hot seat there after 1 year.

S.T.D., let me throw you a bone and HELP you.

I did read the entire post. If you want people to read your entire post, try to keep from posting laughable first sentences in the future.

Now, I ask you point-blank. Do you think keeping Rudolph over Howard (or Allar) makes ANY sense based on our current roster?

Do you think Rudolph would step in and take us into the playoffs and give us a realistic chance to win in round 1 if (probably when) Rodgers gets hurt?

If you answered yes to both, then I can't help you, no one can, you're broken for 2026 and need to file a warranty claim.

If you answered no to either, then you see that having a young QB step into the fire, one with SOME semblance of positive upside, untapped though it may be and stay, is best for this organization, NOW and for the future.

So according to the link, the media only sees about half the OTAs. That's not much. But according to stories they are obviously very different than the previous coach's OTAs. Minicamp is fully open to the media. Should give a better picture.

the flaw i see in your response is you don't think a seasoned backup can learn from good coaching and two non seasoned players can. do you see your flaw. it's right there in front of you. keep looking, you'll get it. every QB drafted has lofty goals for their team mostly to come crashing down once they get on the field. so we are so good at drafting that one 3rd rounder stinks and a sixth rounder will be way better and another completely broken down to a grade school level 3rd rounder is the savior because the fans want to know. got it.

I think Rudolph is the odd man out in the QB room.

This draft is probably going to be one of the better QB classes we've seen in a while. So what I think McCarthy is up to here is he has the QB who can do the job at QB1, and the hope is he stays healthy for a good run into the playoffs. But if the old man gets hurt, you then insert the kid you're intrigued by in Howard, and see what he can do.

If Howard shows you he can handle the job it's a win. If (which is more likely) he doesn't then hopefully they're positioned for a high pick. If not, then there are still enough QB options in this draft where a team could plan on moving into some range for their guy, within reason.

Worst thing that could happen to the Steelers this year is they win enough games to get into the playoffs but don't have Rodgers for the playoffs, and Howard looks bad leading us out of them. Then they're stuck knowing Howard isn't good enough. But in this type of plan there is that slight chance the old man stays healthy and we make some noise. Also there is the possibility Howard shows he can play at this level. So in all that I don't really see a plan that includes Rudolph, who also may even clear waivers and be available on the PS.

Your not throwing anybody a bone, You are making it about Mason, when I'm making it about a experienced backup. So by your words everyone should get rid of their experienced backups because they already know they aren't starters, and just keep rookies, and players that have never played a drop in the NFL. Hmm...............
    I wonder why they don't do that.:hmm:

No worse thing that could happen is we are actually good, and Rodgers gets hurt for a few games in the middle of the season, and we don't have an experienced backup, and Howard, and Allar lose all those games, and then Rodgers comes back, and we look really good again, but we end up missing the playoffs because we didn't have anyone to win a couple of games. That's the worst thing I can think of.

The GM and coach who drafted Rudolph are gone, which is one of many areas in which your comparison falls apart.

I should bring in racoon to guard my chickens next. LoL
If You are suggesting it , I want to go the opposite direction.

Problem with that approach is you have to hope Howard looks more like Roethlisberger or Prescott's rookie season rather than Stafford's, Burrow's, or Mayfield's. If Howard has a typical up and down rookie season are you going back to QB in the next draft?

I don't think the Steelers will keep Rudolph unless they decide to keep four quarterbacks. They're not going to risk losing Howard on waivers if he impresses in training camp, and and for Allar it's extremely rare for a third-round pick to be cut after his first training camp. Need to trust the young player with a higher ceiling more often if we want to be better in the long run

What makes you think the Steelers will keep Rudolph as their number two?

    GEEZZZZ freaking ......
How many times must I say ......I don't care if it's Mason, why must everyone make this a Mason thing???
I want , as do most HCs , want an experienced Qb on the team that they have actually seen win real NFL games, for the event that their starting Qbs go down for a couple of games.
It doesn't have to be Mason.

All things being equal, why would you want the 30 year old over the 22 year old?

He's going to have two OTAs and two camps under his belt. So if he has a typical up and down rookie season he's probably not good enough to QB this team going forward. Also he was a round 6 pick. Which means his inherent value is not sufficient to buy him additional looks like it would if he had been a day one pick.

So if Rodgers were to miss time this year, and Howard does anything other than impress, I expect he'll be looked at as a bridge QB and they will draft a projected QB1 earlier in the 2027 class.

Personally I don't think Howard is good enough to be the QB1 for the future. The staff may like him, but he's limited and that will show at some point. QB in 2027 is likely.
