Is there a world where both Eli and Kaleb Johnson both make the roster?

Eli is a fun story, but I see him on the practice squad.

Not sure how Eli's military commitment works if he doesn't make the Steelers 53-man roster and becomes unemployed when the season begins

Yes. It's not impossible, I'm not too sure it's likely, but it's far from impossible

Rodgers was at that level in 4 games last season, and he was a starter. All four were losses.

I think the moniker you are looking for to get your point across to everyone who is obsessing about apparent hate for Mason is that they need a proven winner at the veteran backup QB position. I would have taken a Cousins over Trubisky. They don't need a Fields, Winston, Smith, or any other failed QB looking for the right rehab situation. They need a guy that can win a game but also not lose a game as well.

My point is exactly what I said. That may be the TEAM'S plan, not yours.

Why wouldn't another team try to get Howard or Allar if they sign them to the practice squad? They aren't giving up anything to get them.

I have no idea how things are going to work out this season. Until a few days ago, I didn't know for sure that Rodgers would even be the quarterback here. In case you haven't noticed, I'm not one of the people here that predict doom and gloom for the team. I tend to be an optimist.

The team has a chance to be very good this year if a bunch of things work out well for them.

The one thing we do know is that Aaron Rodgers isn't going to be the future quarterback of the Steelers. Someone else has to be that guy. If they lose that guy to another team because they chose to keep the more experienced Mason Rudolph on the roster, it will go down as one of the biggest blunders in the history of football.

You're not wrong, but the point that I believe @S.T.D@S.T.D is trying to make is, If they're going to put the future on hold, bringing Rodgers back and hiring the old safe coach, instead of the youth movement, then they'll probably commit to it by giving themselves the best chance to win this year. Which means that MR, or some other veteran QB, would likely be chosen over someone with no experience to be the backup. It has nothing to do with whether you or I believe Howard is/could be better long term.

It's not what I want but I can at least understand the thought process from their perspective, don't go halfway 'all in".

Mason has been told his snaps will be limited

Thats not a good or bad thing

They just want to see what they have in Allard and Howard while keeping AR warned up

They will not look for another vet to replace Mason or they already would have

They know what they have in Mason

If one of the youngsters shows that they can carry the backup load Mason will be gone

Otherwise the less of the two young guys will be stashed somewhere either IR or PS

Allar most certainly is not PS candidate

I know what he means, but if Rodgers goes down with a big injury I don't see Rudolph leading this team anywhere. I would rather see youth be learning and being developed while still trying to win.

Also, he has no idea how well Howard will play this season. He may be an improvement over Rudolph for all we know.

Experienced quarterbacks that suck just suck with more experience.

Rudolph is 1-6 in his last seven professional starts. How is that dude going to save the season if Rodgers goes down? He's not leading them to a Super Bowl. The team needs to start finding out who the future quarterback is going to be. The one thing we know is that Mason Rudolph is NOT the answer as quarterback of the Pittsburgh Steelers. Time to find the next one, and they need to assess as many as they can...as quickly as they can.

If they do decide to keep Rudolph, who gets all the snaps in practice that can be used to at least try to develop some limited experience? Do they give those snaps to Rudolph so he is ready to ride in and save the day, or do they give them to the one or two players that they need to know whether or not they can play the game and become a future option? If they give the snaps to Rudolph, those players are basically just watching with almost no hands-on experience heading into next year, and Rodgers has already said that this year is it for him and he is retiring. How does that help this team long-term.

What if the team goes 2-6 in the first eight games? Do you then pull Rodgers, ignore Rudolph, and play the one young player that hasn't been prepared to play from the beginning?

I'm sorry, but it doesn't make much sense unless they think either Howard or Allar suck and will never be anything, and I don't know how that is possible for them to know when they have played so little pro football.
