Usually we don't see these sky is falling threads until we actually lose some games ( in regular season) The steelers never use pre-season like other teams. yeah it's nice to win but you have 1-4 different teams on the field depending on which game it is.
I think this team will surprise all.

As some have pointed out, the whole staff issue is not all on Tomlin, although I do believe before the team hired Haley that Tomlin was at least asked his opinion on the matter. DL is always going to be DL and I think Tomlin knows that the defensive coordinator job is his until DL doesnt want it any more. And this is a stats driven league, and the whole ranking of defenses is a little off, but nobody on here can say that our defense has not given us a chance to win year in and year out, its hard to argue with that success. I believe this season will finally be the true test of Tomlin's coaching ability. I like Tomlin as a coach, and I believe in him and the team. But with Harrison and other vets leaving to other teams or retiring, we are finally in a core of guys that Tomlin and Colbert have picked and built around. Tomlin was very successful coming in as a new head coach and has continued to be, and some argue that he inherited "Cowher's" guys, and essentially just picked up where Cowher left off. The one thing that bugs me since Tomlin has become head coach though is there seems to be lack of motivation in the players. They never seem to be fired up like they used to be, and that could very well be because of lack of leadership in the locker room, and or coaching. But that needs to change, and change quickly. I like how much the players like Tomlin and say how he's a players coach, but there needs to be separation there too, Tomlin needs to be both the fun dad, but also the enforcer at the same time. Guess I got a little off subject, but like I said, with these new hires, and new schemes, this will be Tomlin's true test. Haley and this Offense will also be tested, last year started off ok, but too many injuries cost this offense an opportunity to shine. If the offense struggles this season with a healthy Roethlisberger, who knows what lies ahead.

Tomlin can only motivate adult players up until a certain point. If the potential to make millions of dollars doesn't motivate them the I doubt anything else will.

Being fired up isn't what wins consistently in professional sports. Being "fired up" only lasts a hot minute. What gets players through is preparation and execution of that preparation.

Bingo! And this is where Tomlin's teams appear to be lacking.

I understand, I'm not saying motivation is all we need to win? Im just saying as a coach it comes with the territory, and honestly I dont think making millions of dollars is enough motivation. To us it would be, but to alot of these players, its seems as if they just expect to make that type of money.

Pete Carol might be the exception with seahawks, his high motivational qualities combined with his preparation seems to be working real well so far, players like to see their coach fired up, Pete has people skills, some coaches never will have those skills, Tomlin is one of those no people skill coaches...

tomlin was good when the veteran were leading the locker room , now that they are gone this team became a mess and tomlin has no power or balls to right the situation ..

I don't believe it's a fair assessment to suggest the entire team was lacking in preparation and execution. If it were true they were lacking in preparation and execution then they wouldn't had won as many games as they did since Tomlin became the HC. The Steelers generally appeared to be prepared to face most opponents since Tomlin became the coach. One factor that impacts execution are injuries. The Steelers remained competitive even with all the injuries they faced with Tomlin as HC. They won a lot of games with Tomlin as HC.

Some people simply believe that the Steelers are better then most teams by a wide margin. It's not true that the Steelers are better then most teams by a wide margin.

How does one measure or judge the amount of motivation a HC provides? Is it yelling/screaming? Is it quiet leadership? Does it boil down to winning vs losing? Is it something else? If you believed that Cowher highly motivated his players then I'll point out that his teams had their share of losing and not making playoffs.

Is it the players that like to see their coach fired up or is it the fans? Plenty of coaches had success without being the fired up type of coaches. There are many different styles of coaching that proved to be successful. One coaching style isn't necessarily better then the other.

It seems to me that Tomlin is a people skills kind of coach. It seems that Tomlin's players enjoy playing for him. If coaches can't get a long with their players and other people within the organization then they are not in a position to be a HC very long.

Tomlin's had more success in the NFL then Pete Carol.

Show us where the team is a mess? I'd agree that the team became a mess if they were not competitive and have multiple losing seasons. Until then........

Anyone else think Tomlin easies up too much when the team gets a lead?

That's sure what the video feed I was getting last night showed ... him ass/shoulder patting & joking with the players, then oops that 10-0 lead is gonzo. Then the same thing happened again when we got the lead in the 2nd half.
