Rodgers is coming back

It's possible I suppose but I'm just fatigued. This languishing just seems to have no end. I'd almost take anything as long as it's different. The McCarthy hiring took the wind out of a lot of peoples sails already. Then to bring back Rodgers again just feels like backpedaling, not moving forward. I believe they have very similar chances(very, very little) to win a SB with any combination of QB's they go with. And, with all things being equal(at least in my mind) I would find it much more enjoyable, and believe it to be more beneficial long term to roll without Rodgers. That's all.

 

What the hell is the matter with you and this Mason Rudolph nonsense. How much more average to below average play do you need to see? You can’t blame it all on MT he was bad in Tennessee too.

Expect the Steelers to restructure some contracts now that Rodgers has signed.

 

Rudolph looked pretty idiotic in his last appearance last year against the Bills. He went 0-3 with a pick. He missed a receiver, threw a ground ball and then his last pass sailed 10 feet over the head of our 6'9" TE and was picked off. Tomlin had no choice but to bring Rodgers back in who was banged up.

 

Again I have never liked McCarthy. But I acknowledge the man knows offense. Also he was undoubtedly behind the offensive additions this offseason, which were significant. We're going to feel the difference in Pittman and Bernard. And the defensive additions were strong as well.

So I find myself wondering whether we are in a moment in time where McCarthy finds himself in the right situation. Meaning with the right GM and organization. Only real chink in what he's done so far is his DC hire. Outside of that he's been on point with one of the strongest offseasons and this draft I think was excellent.

I'm not all that confident Rodgers can stay healthy. But if he does it would not surprise me if this team were to make some noise. I am feeling pretty good about this season.

 

OK, so if they trade Mason right now, and lose 2 QBs again this preseason just like last year, what are your plans then? FYI, Skylar signed with Baltimore.

I still have a feeling that last year's 6th round pick Will Howard will be the guy that finds himself unemployed before the season begins looking for a Practice Squad Job. We all saw the pictures of Mason and Aaron hanging out this weekend.

That being said; In Mike McCarthy's offense is Free Agent Cooper Rush a better backup QB than Mason Rudolph? Rush was horrible last year outside of McCarthy's offense; Ravens released Rush from his 2-year contract March 12th this year.

You are underestimating Father Time. It’s not physical attributes that degrade but recovery time. You pull muscles easier, tendons don’t have the same strength. Anyone that has played competitive sports and tried to do replicate what they did in their twenties, in their forties will attest to it. It’s not about fitness alone. Brady was successful later in life because his football prowess wasn’t dependent on him being a good athlete. Aaron will start out fine, but as toll of hits, strained muscles take cumulative effect, he will degrade in his performance. I think even with better talent around him, by fifth or sixth game, it will be grandpa Rodgers needs to get out of there. I still don’t think that future long term qb is on the team. I can’t think of any qb that was successful in nfl, but had only average stats in college. Both Allar and Howard had average stats despite having elite talent around them.

 

I think they should have went after Flacco rather than waiting on Rodgers

 

We havent had good consistent offensive/qb play since 2017, when Todd Haley was the OC. Yeah, at least part of it has been poor offensive playcalling and system. Rooney recognized it too, hence, he brought in MM

 

By contrast Im quite excited for the upcoming season

I don’t see Rodgers as the full year savior but I do see him being a mentor to Allar and Howard

Having Rodgers around will be infinitely better for their career growth than just some quarterback coach and occasionally a nod from the head coach

And if the two don't develop as hoped then we know we need a quarterback in 2027 draft

If one does step up then the 2027 pick is highest impact player available

I appreciate your thoughts. I will mention one more aspect of this then move on now that it's official anyway.

On top of everything else, I think there's a fear that if there are too many unanswered questions about the young guys, if the Steelers don't feel as if they have quite enough information on them, they might hesitate to do as anticipated and take a top prospect in next years potentially 'legendary' draft class. Then, after missing their big chance, of course both guys subsequently show that they aren't 'the guy'. Next thing you know, we're on the phone to Kirk Cousins to ask if he's in shape.

That's why some people didn't like drafting Allar of course; could his presence jeopardize getting the big name next year? I think the criticisms of him are fair(even as a PSU fan), it's more than reasonable to question whether he could ever be the guy. Hit rates drop dramatically after the 1st rd, and they aren't that great in the 1st. But, in this situation, it could cost us more than a 3rd rd pick if he doesn't work out, we could miss the next guy. That's why so many want some kind of resolution before the next draft.

 

You must not have been around in the '80s.

Step back and look at the big picture. The Steelers are in a rebuild whether they admit it or not. And the Steelers are in a transition from one franchise QB to the next. No one can predict when that next franchise QB will appear, but the team is attempting to stay competitive as possible during this time. Yes, you can argue as many have, that this is the wrong thing to do.
And consider the possible alternative of continuous churn and futility at the position like the Browns have had for two decades while also having losing seasons every year. This can happen to any team with poor management.

Thirty-four rookie QBs have started a game since 2000 and only a few have survived as 'franchise'. The Steelers could be on a search for while.

 

Likely not but at least we could evaluate them similar to what the saints did last season... We have nothing to gain with a 42-year-old QB

 

The way I look at it is the time it took from Bradshaw to Ben will be from Ben to our next franchise QB. History will repeat itself, possibly. JMO>

Rogers is back.
As I've said many times, this is a good thing for our 2 young project QB's, the operative word being "Project"

The contract? It's peanuts. We have 2 young QB's on rookie deals. Not much pain there.
What about them getting experience? They will.
Project w QB's growth can be destroyed by a terrible approach. You put them out there as we did Kenny Picket and have them throwing 50+ times a game... that is never a good thing.
Of course there's the over used theory of "tanking" - so there is that if it exists in your head.

Fortunately, McCarthy and I are one the same page with developing QB's. He's starting from scratch here, and he has an old vet that was really, really great for the offense last year in that mental approach to the game. Rogers did not look great times and many really base everything off that ugly performance against Houston.
But there's more to it than that.

What I think will happen is that a 43-year-old QB probably will get surpassed if the young guns are worth anything.
There is also the injury factor. I don't want to see that as I would rather see and changing of the guard. But the reality is, Rogers is not Benjamin Buttons.

Howard has a leg up, he studied under Rogers last season. Hopefully, he takes those lessons to the field of play.
I think Allar has more talent and most definitely has the better arm. I think he stands to gain the most under Rogers.

I also think, as long as one of the young QB's shows promise, that we will see them entering games around game 4 and onwards. McCarthy is going to want to get them in to see development, if they show anything at all. He has no clear QB for 2027 and Omar really hasn't showed any promise of engineering answers like that.

For me, the best scenario would go something like Allar lights up camp, plays a lot in preseason... Rogers starts the season and as the season wears on Allar earns more playing time. In that case, I don't care what the record is, just show promise.
Worst case would be not seeing either Howard or Allar.

 

I think it's generally better when rookie QBs play behind a savvy veteran before they're thrust into a starting role. I was never for bringing in Rodgers to begin with but what we gain by having him is an excellent example of how you prepare for NFL games week in and week out. A hall of fame QB who's a perfectionist is very beneficial to our rookies IMO.

And while Howard isn't a total rookie, he also hasn't taken a preseason snap yet either. I still consider him a rookie.

If I was making decisions at this point, Mason would be the odd man out. If Rodgers goes down, I'd want to see Howard or Allar come in for relief.

 

Just curious but rudolph has any Trade value ?
