Why compare? Just get excited for the coming TC QB competition. No need to pick a favorite. The Steelers win whoever comes out on top. Isn't that what we ultimately want?

Let me repeat. I did not PM you. When you wrote that post, you clearly meant to imply that I had just sent you one. I did not. The last PM I sent you was in September 2025. Implying otherwise in this manner is dishonest.

Neither of these QBs are likely to be significant starters at the NFL level. Howard's limited physically, he looks the part but I don't like his arm nor his lack of consistency in collegiate tape. Allar's just a mess, and I cannot get past that basic question of why after all those years he could not improve his mechanics. Could either end up becoming something more than you expect? Certainly. Anything is possible. But not likely.

In Allar's case this will be the best staff he's played for in terms of offensive know-how. But mechanics are not something a staff magically fixes. The player has to actively work through that change, it is very hard to adjust that. Requires real dedication and desire. This is what I am not sure Allar has. And even if he has it, then his development is going to require at least a one year redshirt, maybe two. In the NFL teams can move on from you based on speed of development, and there are plenty of recent examples of this to include last year's Super Bowl winner, so if he ends up needing much more they'll move on from him to someone newer and shinier and more ready to play well before he finally gets there.

All I gotta say about both.
If Brees, Montana, and Baker Mayfield can play in the NFL with their lack of arm strength, then so can Howard.
If L. Jackson, Rodgers, and Josh Allen can learn better mechanics in footwork, and passing then so can Allar.

 

That's not true. Penn State is hardly a poverty program like people make it out to be. Its definitely not a T1 program like OSU, but its not like they play with nothing but garbage. Its certainly a better program than Kansas State, where Howard played his first few years at. Allar and Howard are also pretty close statistically for Howard's time as KSU and Allar's time at PSU. Allar had a slightly higher comp% and a slightly better INT%, but Howard threw for more yards per game, yards per completion, had a better TD%. They had similar QB ratings. You can't just chalk it all up to "OMG Allar's WR's were AWFUL". It's not like Howard had anything better at Kansas State (plus, OSU WR's make everyone else's WR's look terrible with the exception of LSU). Howard never had a receiving TE as talented as Warren either.

There analogy is wrong. If Howard played his final season at KSU he likely doesn't get drafted. If Allar played at KSU, he wouldn't have been likely to have been drafted either. I don't think OSU wins the natty if Allar was their QB instead of Howard. Will still played great ball when it mattered, and Allar has never done that in his career. I do think the supporting cast would do a lot to cover up the flaws of either player... so yeah, playing at OSU gives any QB a much better chance of getting drafted than if they played elsewhere.

 

All of this is true, except Mayfield has an excellent NFL arm. It's not elite, but its better than most of the league's. Loads of really good QB's have very average NFL arms. Montana, Brees, Manning on the high end. More recently maybe Burrow, Prescott, and Goff being the more recent examples.

Neither of the two QB's we have in our system right now have "insurmountable" deficiencies. It will all depend on who can develop their flaws and turn their strengths into high end traits.

 

That sounds about right. People act like Allar had no talent around him. His junior year, he had two stud running backs, a strong offensive line, and tight end who was drafted in the first round and made an immediate impact in the NFL.

 

And he had no NFL receivers while Howard had at least three first round WRs at Ohio State.
