We still play board games, mostly modern ones these days. We have a pretty good sized collection, but don't play as much as we did before both kids went off to college.

A lot of games do become monotonous when it's just 2 of you. My wife and I have another couple we have dinner with and we'll break out the board games or a card game sometimes. Our kids will play when they are home. We have 3 grands now so sort of starting it all over again with them as well. Always looking for new games and ideas though. What are some of the more modern games you play?

My wife and I have different tastes for games mostly, but I like more than she does.

My favorite game of all time is Space Hulk (basically a miniatures game with space marines vs. aliens, and dice rolling combat). My wife does not enjoy that type of game at all, so I play that mostly with my son or with friends. It's also not exactly a new game (came out in 1989) but is much more modern than the old classics like Clue or Monopoly. That's my favorite game, and I have a lot of games that are similar that I enjoy. I also really like the Resident Evil board game series. They are very well made and very fun. But again, not my wife's cup of tea.

But the more "modern" style games that we enjoy together are things like the following:

    • Carcassonne
    • Codenames and Codenames Duet
    • Coup
    • Dixit
    • Forbidden Island
    • Survive! Escape from Atlantis
    • Pandemic
    • A Gentle Rain
    • Catan (I'm not really a fan of this, but my wife likes it, so I'll play it with her)

My Dad was always trying to improve the Electric Football Game - trying to straighten out the motion of players by soaking the rubber under carriages in boiling water and then heated mineral oil and then spraying them with 3 in 1 oil. Nothing worked. He also tried dampening the horrendous vibration noise that neighbors down the street could hear by inserting folded up cardboard or balsa wood pieces under the vibration rod under the field with some relief. After he passed and I was going through his "stuff", I found 2 of the tiny wooden footballs from that game with even tinier magnet inserts that you used to launch down the field trying to get them to stick to some player's metal base who miraculously managed to break out of his typical circular pattern. Great memories in spite of all the imperfections. :thumbs up:
