I suppose there's a play here, but what's the expectation for making this UFA tender offer to Rodgers?

After drafting a project QB, is this just to force Aaron's hand and either force him to retire or stop being noncommittal?

Not sure I fully understand it, but I think it gives him more time. He does not (cannot?) sign until training camp in July.

This give the Steelers time to evaluate the 3 guys they have.

WOW, I had never even heard that the Steelers TAG'd Aaron Rodgers for $15 million.
IT is funny, but I don't know why more teams do not use this Tag. I wouldn't think a 10% raise would be much in the NFL after a player had a good year on an expiring contract.

    AI Overview

The Pittsburgh Steelers have placed a rare, right-of-first-refusal UFA tender on quarterback Aaron Rodgers (as reported by ESPN's Adam Schefter), offering him a one-year deal for the 2026 season at a 10% raise, roughly $15 million. This move allows Rodgers to negotiate with other teams but grants Pittsburgh the right to match any offer. The tender preserves the Steelers' right to a compensatory pick if he leaves, and gives them exclusive rights to him if he doesn't sign elsewhere by July 22.
    Key Details of the Tender:

    • Contract Value: The tender offers a 10% increase over his 2025 salary, setting his 2026 compensation at approximately $15 million.
    • Rights Held: The Steelers retain the right of first refusal, meaning they can match any offer sheet Rodgers signs with another team.
    • Deadline/Timeline: If Rodgers does not sign with a team by July 22, 2026, or the start of training camp (whichever comes first), the Steelers gain exclusive rights to him.
    • Goal: This strategic move enables the team to maintain control over the 42-year-old quarterback while preserving their compensatory draft pick formula.
Rodgers played 16 games for the Steelers in 2025, recording 3,322 yards, 24 touchdowns, and 7 interceptions, having initially signed a one-year deal.

Never heard of that tender after a player becomes an unrestricted free agent. That's a new one.

That's some shady stuff. That is essentially a RFA tender.
How come this tender was not reported in the previous league year when players were tendered before free agency? Did they fudge and back date the 2025 contract?

Why is it shady? The report called it a seldom-used UFA tender. That means that it is an existing option that is rarely used.

Do you really think that the team would back date a contract? I mean, really dude? The chances of that are exactly zero.

There isn't a chance in hell the league wouldn't come down with a sledgehammer on the Steelers if they ever even thought of doing something underhanded and against the rules to deny a player access to other teams and making more money.

Real basic- The tender does two things: It gives the Steelers "Right to first refusal", which basically means that if someone offers Rodgers a contract for $X, the Steelers can keep him by matching $X. It also guarantees Rodgers a 10% pay raise if there are no other offers.

I wish Rogers would just go away so we can get to doing what we need to do, and will eventually have to do, soon enough. Since Ben, who have the Steelers acquired and developed through the draft that amounted to anything worthwhile? Wasn't that the Steelers way, building through the draft? As an old timer, that is what I always believed was their MO in building the roster. JMO>

Tenders had to be submitted before March 12. That's one thing. We are in April 29th of the new league year. Nothing was reported.
Rodgers was an unrestricted free agent. Right of first refusal is a tender on restricted free agents.

Was just coming to post that.

Nothing to see here, not some brouhaha, just business and Rodgers was probably told ahead of time.

The only thing this does reveal is that they dont have an answer from Rodgers on what he is going to do. Like Kaboly saying you’re fooling yourselves if you dont think the Steelers already know when Rodgers will sign. Well, apparently not and now the earliest that can happen is the start of training camp.

That is how I read it, too, that it tells us they don't know what Rodgers is going to do. So much for that theory. (I'm one of the ones who thought that was the case, so I'm not poking fun at anyone else.)

    IDK

I think this is in line with what I recently suggested

They had not made Rodgers an offer

Both sides had been in regular contact

And when they drafted Allar the conversation became more specific

Rodgers can come on board and help Allar/Howard until one is ready to step up

Now I’m speculating Rodgers balked at being told he may not be the starter all year

    Possibly he suggested playing elsewhere

Then Omar/McCarthy decide poop or get off the pot

    Go Omar

Could Rodgers get out of this by retiring and unretiring to sign elsewhere or would the Steelers still own his rights?

There is no specific protocol you need to take in order to retire. To be considered officially retired, you must be without a contract for a year from the expiration/termination of your last contract. From that one-year date, you are now officially retired and a notice will be sent to the NFL.

So, it is not a tender. Steelers placed a transition tag on Rodgers, and it was not reported in March, I suppose.

    No you are not correct

Pittsburgh placed an unrestricted free agent tender on Rodgers, a rarely used tender that affords the quarterback the opportunity to accept a 10 percent raise from his 2025 salary ($13.65 million) with the Steelers in 2026, per ESPN.

    Unrestricted free agent tender

    And the did it Monday
