many here are down on our draft and many are OK with it but do you really understand how much of a process this all is with mike mccarthy being new and omar kahn learning each other and needs and wants.

building a team and getting all the coaches on the same page to teach this new offense and defense to the players is quite difficult. throw in free agency and the draft while trying to do this is not a 5 minute process.

the bottom line is you can't put it all in one ball trying to go by what was and what will be with this team. one thing we can be sure of is our new coach has been through this process before which should help the transition. be patient, let it play out. these may be just the players they wanted to fill what they want to do.

Worst pick was Wetjen in the 4th round . Insane pick when they could have had him in the 6th easily and Kyle Louis was available.

Honestly can't think of the last one of these specialist picks worked out, and worse picking him soo early.

You have no ideal he was going to last that long and just because a guy doesn't produce a lot of college stats doesn't mean he can't in the NFL..it could have been his Coach the QB maybe the scheme..He is fast he does play good in space he seems to handle the Foorball well...Remer a player with not a lot of College production by the name of FWP? I do he may become like that as a slot WR.? The skills are there...

There's a reason Louis fell to the end of the fourth round. Too small to play LB, too slow to play safety. Usually when you get those tweeners, they have the athletic ability to make them attractive. Louis doesn't.
And at some point, you have to admit that getting the best return man in the draft/capable slot receiver is worth more than a seventh round flyer. Wetjen will help the team more this year than Louis would.

he should help in 4 wide sets in the slot. iowa doesn't throw a lot so the stats will be down. we needed a punt returner and he's quite good at that. ST's are 1/3 of the game.

That he will have to change positions or be a situational player is why Louis fell that far, but your characterization of him shows you don't know the player that well. Louis has good man coverage skills and the quickness to move to safety. He isn't going to blow you away with his 40 time, but there is plenty of film of him running man-to-man with backs, tight ends, and even the occasional wide receiver.

Not saying Wetjen won't help out but he was picked too early and 1000 percent he would have been there at least 50 picks later.
The new special teams coach was probably just thrown a bone .
The Steelers picked like they are only a couple players away and honestly they are not.

Exactly. This team has far too many holes to go wasting a fourth-round pick on a kick returner.

Failing to address safety until the seventh round and linebacker at all is negligence given the state of their roster at those positions.

But one of the gaping hole is kick return. We lost both the PR in CAIII and KR in Gainwell

I had no interest in Louis, but to take Wetjen in the 4th you would like him to be more of a receiving threat.

Every one can criticize this draft until they are blue in the face, but the thing is there is still the possibility, in time, that this class could be really really good.

That's how I see it. This is not a draft that is going to immediately improve offense and defense, this is a draft that is going to to need good coaching, and patience, and at least a year or two to develop. The raw talent is there, for real, that's how I feel

Then you pick one up in the sixth or seventh round, not that high.

CBS Sports has an article listing some of what they think are the biggest surprises of the draft.
For example, Ty Simpson being picked in the first half of the first round, when he was projected to go end of first or second round.
Followed by Nussmeier, expected to be the 3rd QB picked by a long list of analysts, who wound up as the 10th QB picked in the 7th round.

If media analysts were doing the picking, someone could be 1000 percent certain when a player would be picked.
But many of these analysts make the mistake of ranking players by their college production, rather than if the player's skills and talents will translate to the pro game. (Many of the best college players have no chance in the pros.)
At least consider the possibility that this player was misjudged by analysts who would have chosen him "50 picks later".

Trust the process? Like when they hired and then promoted Matt Canada? Or kept extending Tomlin? Nope. Ill just watch and hope for the best knowing that even the Steelers (specially in this post Dan Rooney era) can make serious mistakes. Regarding this draft, wasn't perfect but if we improve the o line and receiver room because of this draft, then it was a success. Maybe we can get a safety in FA.

2 of the top 4 kick returners (by yards/return) this past year were Luke McCaffrey (3rd round) and Ray Davis (4th round).
Devin Hester (from a dozen years ago) was a 2nd round pick.

If picking earlier is significantly less of a gamble than a 6th or 7th rounder, sometimes it is worth it.
