Gruden interviews Ty Simpson.

Same here... was listening to Facelift and Badmotorfinger albums before I knew who Nirvana was.

I remember posting/lurking on the Harmony Central forums in the late 90's and 00's... and there was some serious butthurt from the glam rock, shredder dudes hating on Cobain and how he destroyed rock music. Called Cobain's simple style of guitar and songwriting "flogging." Cobain didn't play the guitar... he flogged it.

I guess Bob Dylan was a flogger, too.

 

I never hated on his 3rd grade level of playing, many bands have gotten away with that long before Cobain. I just knew why they were the most popular. It's not magical that some of the most popular songs written are some of the most simple songs ever written. For most people if it has a simple hook is all they need to like it, and the more complex it is the same people tend to dislike a song. Hell 90% of rap has lived off this concept. Playing to the lowest common denominator. LoL
Yes Soundgarden I heard way before Nirvana, and yet people still say they(Nirvana)paved the way. See what I mean. LoL

 

I credit all 4+1 with paving the way..... SG, AIC, PJ, NV and STP.

I love complicated music... 70's Genesis and Yes... 80's Rush, Dream Theater, Mr. Bungle, Tool (Lateralus to present).... just to name a few.

I was just thinking that Cobain was perhaps the last great male American rock singer. There is no doubt that had he lived past the age of 27, he would have had many more hits.

He had such a distinct, raspy voice where the music seemed to accompany his vocals rather than the other way around. Unlike most baritones, he had incredible range and rare vocal power when he really let it rip.

Rest in peace my good man. I’m not quite sure what any of this has to do with the quarterback prospect Ty Simpson, but I wanted to share those thoughts!

I used to play. Wasn't very good, just a young college kid who could fill a small room. I sang and played the trumpet. Impossible to do them both at the same time. In hindsight, I should have learned guitar.

 

In real time, Pearl Jam was my favorite of the bunch. But in retrospect, I think Alice in Chains is probably my favorite. Of the three big MTV Unplugged concerts from those grunge bands (Nirvana, Pearl Jam, AiC), I think that AiC is the one that everyone forgets about. But it is amazing. And I severely under-rated Jar of Flies in real-time (even though I did have the CD).

I did really like Soundgarden, but didn't appreciate Cornell enough. As an old guy who now mostly listens to acoustic music from the bands / artists I loved in the past Cornell's Songbook (2011) is amazing.

IMO Nirvana was popular because they were authentic and tuning into the feeling of that generation. They were the opposite of those 80s hair bands (I'll use Def Leopard as an example here).

Many of those 80s bands were technically proficient, but over-produced and "fake" as hell.

Cobain wasn't nearly as technical as they were on guitar, but he was authentic. Which was the opposite of the Def Leopards of the world.

And while the guitar parts were simple, Dave Grohl was not-so-quietly delivering a solid technical performance on the drums. Not Pert (as a Canadian, I'm contractually obligated to like Pert first in any drumming conversation) or Bonham IMO. So for the drummers out there, Nirvana is probably sneaky good on that front...personally, I'm an acoustic guitar + singing kind of guy...but I do play edrums in Rockband (which likely doesn't count for much)

 

Among the last for sure.

If I had to pick "the last", I'd go with Grohl.

But he never had the super-stardom that Cobain had.

 

I believe Art Rooney’s recent comments could be misinformation! In my view, the less the Steelers discuss their draft plans publicly, the better.

It seems likely that these statements are intended to prevent other teams from trading ahead of pick #21 to take Simpson. By signaling a lack of interest, the Steelers may be creating a smoke screen to ensure he remains available, while privately intending to select him. I say this actaully increases the odds of the Steelers selecting hin. Ultimately, like any draft strategy, it will depend on who is still on the board at the time.

If the Steelers were really interested in Simpson, they would've sent Khan/McCarthy to Alabama pro day. They didn't even bring him in for a top 30 visit, give it up dude it's not happening in the first round.

 

It seems that some screens may be working for some individuals. It is possible that they had a private meeting with Simpson.
