He definitely made his share of mistakes, but that defense relied heavily on him and fell apart when he got hurt.

He was improving, but he never did figure out how to stop leading with his head, and that cost him dearly.

    This.

But even if he wasn't DPOY level and remained a guy who was kind of at the edge of the conversation, the D would have been much better.

Because the year he got hurt was the rookie year of one Trent Jordan Watt.

Watt was raw when we drafted him and took a little while (not long though) to hit his stride.

Imagine that D with Shazier in his prime and Watt ascending and Cam still as just Cam and not Old Man Logan. Still with Tuitt.

And it's not just the defense.

If Shazier doesn't get hurt, the defense is peaking while the offense is still good. So both sides of the ball would have been good at the same time.

Maybe it wouldn't have made a huge difference because Brady was still Brady. But the Steelers would have had a much better end of their championship window without a freak accident that destroyed Shazier's career (but thankfully didn't cripple him permanently).

I like Queen, plays sideline to sideline. Queen has had the same difficulties thaat every linebacker we put out there has. The Dline interior hasnt really protected our linbackers.

Why before the Draft? Right now "Before" the draft you have anyone sitting on the shelf that is ready to takeover his starting spot? Harrison and Holcomb :lolol:???

FYI Harrison and Holcomb will count $9.8 million against the cap this year.

Nor should they. Wilson essentially got his starting job taken at the end of the year because he proved to be a liability in the run game (anyone remember the Buffalo game?), and he lost it to Harrison... who is terrible. Queen is our best ILB by a lot. Now... is he overpaid? Sure. But we need two new ILBs if we want to replace Queen. Neither Holcomb nor Wilson are currently starting quality at the moment.

Teryl Austin's scheme sure as hell didn't aid that either. Regardless though, as a player, have to overcome some of your own short comings. Patrick Queen's proclivity for and overreliance in his athleticism over technique has gotten him into far more trouble in 2025 than he ever was in 2024.

Teryl Austin did have schematic issues of his own (Tomlin also) but Queen has never fully displayed any sort of consistency within his performances... ever since being acquired.

It’s kind of funny to me to hear people ragging on Spillane. When butler was our dc he said Robert Spillane will be a starter in this league. Steeler fans loved to rag on both of them makes you wonder

I think you hit on one problem people have in evaluating players or teams. They want to put all the blame or give all the credit to one person or thing. It is more complicated than that. Queen has not refined his game. Poor decisions and poor technique continue to lead to erratic play. The Steelers' scheme also did him no favors. Neither did sticking him with the green dot, which he had already shown was a problem for him in Baltimore. All of those factors led to play that has been, at best, erratic.

The Steelers can alwad find a fecent 2 down run deferrer much cah

Given his high salary cap hit relative to his performance, I believe Queen has become a liability. While he shows potential against the run, his missed way too many tackles and overall play don't seem to justify his current value. He flat out sucks vs. the pass. Furthermore, the fact that the Ravens allowed him to walk in free agency should have been a RED FLAG.

It is interesting to note that former Steelers linebackers, such as ILB Robert Spillane, have seen a resurgence after leaving. Hmmmm....this raises the question of whether the coaching under Mike Tomlin is a factor? Yes I think it was. I also think the Steelers would be better off pursuing a more affordable veteran or drafting a replacement.

In my view, the team should either release Queen or have his agent renegotiate a lower cap hit for him to remain with the Steelers.

Not this season just got his his roster bonus.

He is a UFA in 2027. Then its Ba Bye.

Some people just can't resist being D####s complaining about another post about a player or the team. Be the bigger person and just pass it by. That's the adult thing to do...

Buddy, I can always count on you to bump my threads. That is just who you are. In the meantime, please do come up with some of your own material specifically in a football context.

ILB has been a weakness since the loss of Shazier.... a very long time. Steelers got better at CB with the drafting of JPJ. But yeah... ILB, NT/DT, #2 WR and OT have been the biggest weaknesses of the Steelers for while now.

What veteran do you want them to pursue? The free agent market has been picked over fairly thoroughly.

The Ravens liked Simpson and they had already made a big investment at linebacker in Smith, so they chose not to give Queen a big contract, so there were financial reasons for that move, too.

The Steelers miscast Queen by having him wear the green dot, something he struggled with in Baltimore when they asked him to do it, too. Hopefully, they give it to someone else this season.

Any improvement on Queen will almost certainly have to come through the draft. Every single team in the NFL wants high end play from their ILBs. There is not a defensive system that isn't somewhat dependent on it.

Another part of this that I didn't mention is that if Shazier didn't get hurt, we wouldn't have felt like we needed to trade up to take Bush. So we would have used that draft capital to improve the team elsewhere instead of trying (and failing) to get back to where we were.

Let me teach you bit more Joel since you seem to be way behind

The soft deadline for the Pittsburgh Steelers to trade linebacker Patrick Queen passed on Friday, with the team paying him his $2.5 million roster bonus, nearly assuring that Queen will be on the Steelers for the 2026 season.
