On the western side, we have only stayed at the Vidanta property. I don't know if you are familiar with it, but the property is just astounding with more than a dozen restaurants, a building with a rooftop pool and restaurant, gorgeous golf course that they have a PGA tour event at. That's why I like Nuevo. I stay on the property because there is just so much there. Vidanta is right across from the Cirque du Soleil if you are familiar with that area. The resort is so huge and there is so much to do there that we have never ventured to do the local flavor as much as we have in the other areas of Mexico we have visited.

Remember, I'm only there on vacation. I have never lived in Mexico. Cabo was just such a beautiful place. I loved it around the marina with the water and all the restaurants. The bars and just the vibe of the place. I understand it has gotten a lot more commercialized since we were there. Also, we stayed at a beautiful resort that was a Hilton, but the name escapes me right now. It was right on the water sitting up above some serious surf with an infinity pool. I would just sit there and watch the waves crash on the rocks at that point, and sometimes come over the top and flow down to the sand behind it. It was mesmerizing and beautiful. It was also an open building with the ocean breeze flowing through the building and it had a real authentic Mexican vibe through the entire place.

Also, Sammy Hagar's Cabo Wabo and a couple bars outside the protected area were a ton of fun while hanging out with locals and vacationers that venture to that area. As I said, I hear Cabo has a much different feel to it now than when I was there years ago.

That game was one of Ben's greatest performances, 44-66 for 506 yards. We were trailing 31-20 going into the fourth quarter then Ben went nuts pulling out a 39-38 win.

I've been in the marina in Nuevo several times and spent a week with the in-laws at Paradise Village. Seemed too crowded for me. I don't golf so, that's not a selling point for me. Next time you go, do Chico's paradise, visit the beach where they filmed Night of the Iguana, though it's very commercial now, go to Yelapa. Or, head west and go to Punta de Mita.
As far as CSL goes, most of us who were there in the late 70s through the 80s feel that the true downfall of the place was the Giggling Marlin. The whole area used to be able to sustain itself on artesian wells for water (Except the hotels had watermakers). We used to catch grouper, dorado, roosterfish, sometimes even marlin and sailfish from the moorings right in front of "the Office" Way before they roped everything off.

They make a fortune on the charter fishing with the tourists. Of course all the resorts get their cut because they set everything up right from the front desk of all these places. They don't want anybody casting a line without making a profit.

Thanks for the tips. If I get there again, I'll give it a look.

Well, sportfishing is what put that place on the map. That's why we were all down there. Taking our bosses fishing. They make a fortune on just about everything there! First time I ever saw a tequila bar was there. I remember looking at the menu and asking, "who would pay more than 200 dollars for a bottle of tequila?" "No senor, that is for one shot"! In the late 90s, I used to joke that, if you THOUGHT about going out, it would cot you $100.00. If you actually did go out, it would be at least $300! Anyway, I've hijacked this thread too much. All the games are exciting..........usually.

And by contrast I really have no desire to go back to either

But my wife and I do like Mexico but we tend to do less touristy places like La Paz and Zihuatanejo

I was in Progreso in '95. It wasn't much more than a commercial port then. I understand they've worked hard to make it a tourist destination.
I don't hesitate to go to Vallarta. Just like anywhere else, there are sketchy parts. My only hesitation is with time of year. It gets very humid and I don't care for humidity much!

I've been to Puerto Escondido, Puerto Angel, Huatulco and Pochutla but, not to the city. It looks really cool though.

If/when I make it to Oaxaca I was thinking of taking a bus or plane to Puerto Escondido and stay there a while

On business I’ve been to Cuernavaca several times and really liked it so
I’m thinking Oaxaca is similar +/-

Never surfed and too old now

I do enjoy watching the ocean

I lived in Colorado and was a fairly good skier

Many years ago I was doing business with an old Amish guy who I really liked

I went to the beach for a couple of weeks and when I came back he said “tell me what the ocean is like”

It absolutely broke my heart knowing that this man would never see an ocean

I tried thinking how he and I could ride a buggy over 4 states to get there

Trying to explain the ocean to someone who's never seen it? That would be tough!
Colorado is my home state but, never learned to ski. It probably would have gone the same way as my attempts to surf. I kept falling off the board, so I figured I might as well just go swimming!

A neighbor and his wife go to Puerto Vallarta at least once a year. She is from there. Just a few months ago at the height of the tensions, they were ordered to shelter in place for a week or so before they were cleared to go to the airport to come home.

So much of Mexico is becoming more dangerous for US citizens. We have actually avoided vacationing in Mexico the last couple years because of some of the outbreaks of violence against Americans we have been hearing about.

Just do your homework and try to talk to anyone that can give you true on-the-ground information. For me, if I have to work that hard to try to make sure it's safe, it probably isn't.

    Be careful brother.

Thank you! Wife and I enjoyed that. And certain old world family members called it blasphemy.:) Use to make my own but with age comes, "F that, I'm to damn lazy". Can't believe how some of the jars of sauce cost 7-8 bucks. We are fans of Prego Marinara with a little help. Sugar. And sure as hell don't pay 4.69 for it. 2 for 3 dollars on sale.
