Goodell and the NFL made sure the owners got the memo at the owners meeting about an 18 game schedule.

And tell me again how the Chiefs don't get special treatment from the league:

"Here’s the thing: The NFL’s Annual League Meetings take place from Sunday through Wednesday, and representatives of all 32 teams have gathered to go over key matters. One topic drawing attention is the 2026 season opener, where the reigning champions, the Seattle Seahawks, will host the kickoff game. Among the potential opponents, the Chiefs remain one of the possibilities. However, a new update from owner Clark Hunt has caught many fans off guard.

“I don’t think that’s on the table anymore,” Clark said at the NFL owners meeting when asked if the Kansas City team would start the season against Seattle, as reported by Nate Taylor. “I think from a league standpoint, there would be some concern whether [Patrick Mahomes] would be ready to go.

“It’s not a request we’ve made. It sounds like a good idea [for the NFL], although it’s only 1 [more] day.”"

I think for each game over 16 in the regular season, each team's owner should stand in front of the 53 starting players on opening day, and allow all of them (one at a time) to hurl an 8 lb (soft) medicine ball at the owner with all their might. That might give them some perspective on why additional games are not as simple as sitting in a comfy chair for another week.

If the per game pay check works out in the players favor, and the NFLPA agrees with the plan, go for it. It's all about money anyway. The league, the owners, and the players. Make a deal that makes sense for everybody.

Why stop there? 20 game seasons and players will stop playing till they're 35 and older. The war of attrition will be the determining factor every season.

I think this is the way I'd try to structure the argument
    • An extra game makes the NFL a bunch more money.
    • Currently with a 17 game season, player take of revenue is 48.8%.
    • We are prepared to increase player take of revenue to 50% with an 18 game season. This is similar to how we increased player take from 48% to 48.8% when we went fro 16 to 17 games, but the "bonus" to players for the 18th game is 50% higher than going from 16-17 games (1.2% increase from 0.8% increase)...the league might think this increase is too high.
    • We also propose to increase league minimum salaries, including practice squad salaries (I assume practice squad players get to vote on the CBA too).
    • We will add an extra bye week to all teams to provide players more rest time in-season. This means that (i) players will get more gross money because there is more revenue, (ii) players will also see an increased share of revenue, (iii) more of this income will go to players at the bottom end of NFL income distribution (where most of the voting members are).
    • We will also work with the PA to consider adding a cap on the snap% players can play on a rolling 4 game average in the regular season (lifted in the playoffs). [IMO, this is better for the league than the alternate idea that each player can only play 17 regular season games or something...because who wants to buy a ticket to a KC game where Mahomes isn't playing?]
Crafted this way, I think all low earning players would mostly vote for the plan. As is usually the case in sports, I think high income earners would be against it. But guys who ware only going to be in the league for a few years at or near the minimum would probably vote for something that gives them more money now IMO.

I think the PA will vote will go the way the owners want if they make it attractive for low-end roster guys with shorter careers. This is the majority of the voters.

And it's why lockouts will always make players cave. Because if you only have 2 years in the NFL to make more money than you will ever make again, you aren't going to sit one of those years out so that star players with long careers can get even more advantages.

He is the face of the League. Not stating I condone the NFLs blatant admission of favoritism but the League wants $$$. Mahomes brings that and then some.

Now, by himself?! No. Is he still the biggest overall draw in the sport? Yes.

Just remove their pads, add flags, and make a 40 game schedule already. That way I can be done.

Horrible idea but not surprising. 17 games is already too much as is 7 teams making the playoffs. 16 games and 6 making the Dance was the perfect setup
