You would expect so. This was a classic Arthur Smith misuse of personnel, one of the big complaints about him in Atlanta.

Steelers didnt give Muth that contract to not be involved and with less focus on jumbo packages under MM, he should see plenty of action.

    Both guys should be featured!

For passing downs that is 'Muth

For running downs that is Washington.

Both play in the 2 TE sets.

Trust Mike McCarthy to pick the best men based situational football. Mike McCarthy is far better than Art Smith on play calling. Smith was merely competent. Mike is good to very good.

Washington will still be involved but it is only natural with the addition of Pittman and MM running a west coast offense that Washingtons snaps will take a hit. There is no argument that Muth is a better receiving TE than Washington.

He should receive less targets in the pass. This is true. But the man is huge and a big time player in the pass catching department inside the 10 yard line!

Here is the #1 TE and likely a primary or secondary target. A tough cover he is. Too tall for all DB's and most LB's inside the 10.

Figuring it out is one thing, stopping it is another.

Agreed, but they can't just take Washington out every time there is a passing situation. That makes it too easy for the defense.

Washington is a mismatch for any defense and should be
used in red zone at all cost.

I don’t have anything sound to base my optimism on but I’m hoping Washington can improve in the receiving department

He could be a heck of a weapon

Are you suggesting playing two tight end sets more often

Or are you suggesting playing Muth on passing downs and Washington on running downs

I’m trying to figure out if this is a bad idea or a ridiculous idea

This is why I think we should trade Muth. I just think that Washington is more of a mismatch / threat. And we're almost certainly going to extend him (I hope). And we might be able to buy low here becuase we've been running such a ****-show of an offense.

It made sense to have 2x TEs you could start in an Arthur Smith offense.

We'll have fewer snaps for TE2 this year.

The "good news" here is that although we won't be running 2x TE2s with Muth and J Smith.

But I don't think we'll trade either one of them. Muth's contract still has 3 years left, so I wouldn't give him away for nothing. He's an average TE1 and a good TE2 (using him our TE3 - most used TE3 in the league certainly - last year was really stupid).

If that's the case, hopefully we don't draft one before day 3 and again have this 3 TE problem.
