Bill Mazeroski died a few days ago. I was 6 when he hit his walk off homer against the Yankees. Maz was the greatest fielding second baseman and still holds some defensive records. Maz and Clemente were the only two holdovers from the 60 team that won the World Series again in 1971. Maz died at age 89 and was one of my boyhood heros. RIP Maz.

I think I read that he still holds the MLB record for most double plays. Those were some smooth quick hands. It also must credit Groat, Scofield and later SS's with helping out since it takes 2 or 3 to perfect the DP. OK 4, since maybe more importantly the pitcher who must be credited as well for keeping it on the ground in the infield. Well done Maz. The statue of him at PNC is amazing!

In 1966 Gene Alley and Maz set the major league record for double plays turned in a season. Still the record 60 years later.

Ah, forgot about Gene Alley. And then several years later didn't Mario Mendoza play SS? The benchmark Batting Avg guru in perpetuity. At least until the 2025 Suwinzki Level outdid the Mendoza Level or underdid it. :lolol:

Neal Sedaka died today at age 86. Many of us old timers remember his hits from the 60's like "Calendar Girl" and "Breaking Up Is Hard To Do".

Lou Holtz died today at age 89. He's the last Notre Dame coach to win a National Championship. My favorite Holtz quote was after his Arkansas team won a berth to the Orange Bowl fans started throwing oranges on the field. When asked about he said "I'm just glad we aren't going to the Gator Bowl!"

I had just moved to Arkansas the 1st time, the year after he was Hired. I remember seeing him on Johnny Carson, and him giving Carson a plastic Razorbacks hat.

I have this one cable channel that I watch all the time called Antenna. They have some of my favorite comedies from back in the day like "Sanford and Son" and "Barney Miller. Anyway at 11:30 every night they have the old Johnny Carson shows. I forgot how great Carson was as a comedian/talk show host. We'll never see anyone that good again.

Back in the day Carson came on at 10:30 PM in Hawaii. Me and my roommate watched it almost every night. To this day I imitate him when someone tells me something new. I say, "I did not know that" with the little head tilt he gave when he said it.

I remember when he got divorced from one of his 4 wives. He made jokes the whole show about the money he had to pay her. He made it funny but you could tell how pissed off he was about it.

One of his all time greatest laughs was when the guy was throwing tomahawk's at a wooden figure. The guy threw it right into the wooden figures penis. Crowd went crazy and Carson had to run behind the curtain he was laughing so hard.

That was Ed Ames of the Ames Brothers singing group who played a half-Indian named Mingo on the TV Show Daniel Boone with Fess Parker. Probably the funniest moment ever on the Tonight Show. He died only 2 years ago at age 95.

All the older folks I knew were pulling for Baltimore since they hated cocky Broadway Joe. That made me a Jet fan for that SB. Snell had a great SB leading Jets to their only SB. I enjoyed that day.

    Thanks Matt. RIP!

RIP. I met him through one of my instructors/coach/trainer back in the day. He acknowledged me, but he sat, and talked with my trainer for a while, apparently they knew each other from before.
I for some reason expected him to be bigger. Not that that matters, but I just did. RIP

It only takes Chuck Norris 10 minutes to watch 60 Minutes
