Did Kordell Stewart play in the wrong era?

Talk about trying to fit a square peg in a round hole. He was particularly bad in the red zone. Maybe more consistency in the OC department helps his cause. He had 5 different coordinators in 7 years.

    A) you’re the second person to repsond that missed the sarcasm directed at another board member.

    B) you wrote all that and didn’t even address the point. Tomlin is not the only coach to win with inferior QBs. Cowher did it too and was more successful at it.

Also, one factor we need to mention is that Wilson and Rodgers had franchise QB salary with the Jets or Broncos, who was not the case when they were with the steelers.....And the Jets and Giants have been the 2 worst NFL franchise in the last 10 years, nobody have said that the steelers were in the bottom 5 as franchise....they are in the middle of the pack franchise right now

He would be Justin Fields, which is EXACTLY what he was then. Unreal arm with the accuracy of a t-shirt cannon.

Kordell still wouldn't be able to get to a super bowl today because he still wouldn't be a good enough passer today just like Lamar hasn't gotten to a super bowl for the same reason.

Great athlete. Once teams forced him to beat them in the pocket (97 & 01 AFC title games) he imploded. He was dreadful in both of those games.

Lamar is a much better passer than Stewart ever was.

I'd argue that Kordell played in an era that should have been better for him than today's NFL. He was a surprise at the position that defenses weren't as prepared for as they are now. In today's NFL, I think he wouldn't be as "successful" as he was.

Kordell would have been an awesome WR. He was a good route runner in the slash role, fast and quick as hell with good hands. Imagine Maddox having Burress, Ward and Stewart to throw to in early 00's.

And maybe he could have been the first to throw a TD to Hines Ward in a super bowl as a WR, before ARE did it in 2005!

I was thinking about Kordell Stewart’s tenure with the Steelers. In my view, he was a runner first and a quarterback second; he simply couldn't read a defense effectively. I believe he would have fared even worse on another team.

As it stands, he arguably cost a stacked Steelers team multiple chances at another Super Bowl. Can you imagine if he had played with an average or poor defense? His mistakes and interceptions would have been even more costly for the team.

He was better than Graham and Miller because they were never going to win games no matter how stacked the Steelers were at the skill positions. I'd put Maddox and Stewart just slightly above NOD.

I would put O'Donnell above him too.

Neil left us as he was peaking and Rooney was too cheap to pay him in free agency. He was a super bowl QB, Stewart was not. As a starting quarterback in the playoffs, Stewart had a 48.6 passer rating, throwing for 744 yards, 2 touchdowns, and 8 interceptions. He fumbled some too.

He was too inconsistent as demonstrated by SB30 and I'll never forget the interview he gave about mid-season that year in which he stated that he had bad mechanics and he had worked to change that which accounted for his increased success. Because you know you want to wait until you're at the middle part of your pro career to change fundamentally how you play football. Nope NOD barely ranks above the dumpster fire that was Miller.

Keep that **** out of here, it’s not difficult to do.

@Eichburgh@Eichburgh you’re new here so more leeway to you but we have a no politics policy because the thread will just turn into a **** show.

Football is urban, tough and based to a large degree on the capacity to overwhelm the other team with sheer force. Football is a tank attack, a sky-borne assault, a charge into the trenches for hand-to-hand fighting. Football is following orders and sticking to the strategy; it’s about acting as a unit and taking hits for the group. Football is generals (coaches) and captains (quarterbacks) and the enlisted guys who play on the line.

Mark Edmundson, an English professor at the University of Virginia, is the author of the just published book “Why Football Matters: My Education in the Game.”

Even if Stewart plays better in 97, I still think they lose to Denver. The Broncos were the better team and actually had one less loss than the Steelers. That game was in Pittsburgh because the Chiefs had three losses to the Broncos four. Had they advanced to the SB somehow, they probably get their doors blown off by GB. Denver was the only team suited to beat that Packers team.

If he didn't turn the ball over in 01, I think they beat NE. They had no business losing that game. But terrible ST's and QB play cost them big time. Then he has the nerve to say "the best team doesn't always win".
