The article was ranking Pickett as the worse selection because he was ranked the worst QB. It’s not based on draft position, obviously guys selected top 5 or that a team gave up a lot of draft capital for would be worse picks for those reasons.

But from pure capabilities perspective, scouts and executives polled chose Pickett as the worst. There is nothing special about him, what does he do well? Not particularly athletic, undersized hands, average arm, poor accuracy, poor wonderlic score.

Agreed, when was the last time the Steelers picked up a 5th year option?

Pickett threw a pretty good deep ball at Pitt (had two great WR's), but it never translated well in the pros. But yes, everything else was average or below average. It was a reach for the Steelers to draft him in the 1st round, and unfortunately it didn't work out. I'd be surprised if he's still in the league next year.

There is no way a QB drafted in the top 5 is “better” than a QB drafted in the 20’s if franchises give up on both.

I think the reason Kenny is in the discussion is because folks thought the Steelers were a QB away from glory and expectations were high. Yet we often handcuffed Kenny until the 4th quarter.

I was a huge Pitt/ Pickett fan so I have time when it comes to Kenny. He didn’t pan out but we just watched Aaron Rodgers put up 6 points in a playoff game. The offense was inept under Tomlin and company and if we invested in the offense like we invested in defense maybe we have more success.

I’ll say this.. go back to the Raiders game, both Baltimore games and even the Miami game that we lost. Kenny showed flashes when we opened the offense up.

Buffalo invested in Josh Allen and gave him weapons after his first few years. What did the Steelers invest in on offense? We shipped Pickens out of town and he was a top 5 WR. We brought in DK who is also a head case. My frustration with the FO was giving the D the world but the offense was treated like an afterthought.

Pickett had a weak arm, horrible pocket presence, couldn't scramble, etc. He was just not talented, and he had the least amount of talent compared to the other QBs on the list which is the criteria for the article.

Its a good thing Steelers didn't invest in the offense and moved on from Pickett when they did. Had they just had a tiny bit more success, we'd likely still be saddled with Pickett.

If multiple draft picks are given up to get a 1st round Qb, and they are still a backup, I don't see how a guy taken later in that round for nothing but that pick could be worse.
If neither one of you are playing.....the one that more was given up for must be worse.

This thread, well, is something else.
The idea of Pickett as the worst QB has to be filtered by 'the last 5 years.' which is just terrible.

    So here we go.
First and foremost, Kenny Pickett was supposed to be 'project' despite what some have said here.
Bad decision #1: Big Ben was out of gas the last 2 years for sure. I don't care if he whined if I draft a QB. It was obvious Mason wasn't the guy. They passed.
Bad decision #2: Omar and Colbert(handing over the torch) had that in mind. This while thinking Mitch Trubisky could mentor him in.
Bad decision #3: They trot him out on the field week 4 after Mitch produced exactly nothing, they kind of did the right thing as Pickette threw 13 times for 120 yards and rushed for 2 TDs. Bad news is, he threw 3 picks.
Bad Decision #4: They name him the starter for a game against the Bills. Our genius Offensive Coordinator, Matt F@#$king Canada, has him dropping back 51 times! Result a whopping from the Bills 38-3.....
Bad Decision #5: Etc..... and the concussions start. Matt Canada's offense was unwatchable.
Bad Decision #6 Pickett missed some games... but again came back and provided some last minute heroics with some late wins. What's wrong with that? Well he's a twice concussed rookie project QB who even if upper tier would provide highs and lows... the offense did not adjust Nothing changed.
The good? He became the first rookie to throw game winning TDs for 2 games. He has a game ball in the HoF too.

Bad Decision #7: Still no WRs that break open games. Pickett was here but Canada didn't know how to work him.
Bad Decision #8 -20: Keeping Matt Canada.
Bad Decision #21: Not sticking with the "clerical error" and named Mason #2 and let Kenny earn what he earned which may be nothing or maybe more. In not doing so, they gave the false security of being the Steelers QB. Darn right he was upset when old man Wilson showed up. Even though year two was terrible for Pickett, Canada was supposed to get the best from him, he couldn't even get the best from his offense.

There were other bad decisions. The entire thing was toxic lending credence to dimwits that don't know a QB from a mountain goat let alone a colossal string of utterly terrible decisions. I wish I had magical powers to impress on some just how God-awful Matt Canada was.... I literally had a colleague seek me out in the press box to remind me that I left Washington for this... pointing out Matt Canada's terrible offense.

It's all water under the bridge. The coaching has changed and there's probably going to be a lot of new faces. I can't worry about Kenny Pickett, he has to write his own story. My gut feeling is that unless he can get on the Rams, or 49ers, maybe the Vikings, his career is as a backup or maybe over.
I do hope Howard has a better shot.
And any future QB, I am really skeptical that Omar will produce anything. I want to be wrong.

You’re applying parameters different from what the scouts and executives are basing it on.

Matt Miller compared where he ranks pre-draft compared to quarterbacks who went in the first round. Miller polled scouts and executives to make the list, which included only pre draft evaluations.

Lance and Richardson have far better talent than Pickett.

do they? I know Richardson killed it in shorts at the combine but anyone who watched him at Florida knew he was TERRIBLE and clammed up anytime he had an INT or bad throw.

What talent does Trey Lance have? He has 5TD’s and 2 INTs in his NFL career.

I looked up to see where Matt Canada landed after getting fired from the Steelers and the answer is nowhere. He is now entering his 3rd year of unemployment.

Good for him. I hope he was wise with his money, because his days of getting those big paychecks are over.

Absolutely. Name one trait that scouts look for that Pickett excels at? It’s why Lance and Richardson were selected so early.

And once again this exercise is based on their pre draft evaluations but I dont think stats is where you want to go to defend Pickett anyway, he had 6 TDs in 13 games his first season. Lance 5 in 6 games.

I'm a bit surprised myself at how badly things have gone with Pickett. But we didn't do him any favors. I think he may be in a better position now had we not taken him in the first, had Tomlin not declared "we got our guy", had we not thrust him into the starting role so soon, had we had a better vet mentor than Trubisky, had we had an offensive line that wasn't a weakness, had we had a reasonably competent offensive coordinator and had we not essentially benched him after injury.

I'm not saying we'd otherwise have a star franchise QB on the roster but I think the Steelers put on a masterclass of how NOT to handle the guy they thought was "our guy".

The KP pick smells of Rooney all over it. NFL scouts (and maybe even the Steelers) knew the draft class was weak. Pickett was the latest first QB picked in almost 30 years. Rooney wasn't going to let the 'next Dan Marino' slip by the Steelers again even though evidence of Pickett being a Marino type QB is non-existent. Very possible Rooney overrode the org and forced the pick.

“As soon as I made the decision to come here, I texted Kenny and got to talk to him a little bit and told him, 'Hey, every day we go out there, let's be the best version of ourselves and try to make this team better,'" Wilson said.

Apparently Ken Pickett thought the best way to make the team better was run away from the team.

    Who am I to argue.

But the fact remains that he was staying with the team and then ran from the team as soon as competition came.

Another reliable proof of the facts.

    Survey question

Is there anyone intelligent who does not understand and agree to this.
