I wouldn't include Staubach with those other guys teams knew he had to complete a four-year military commitment.

The odds are much lower when you are drafted late but I agree this is possible to ruin a young QB in a bad team

As mentioned previously, I think Kirk will return to the Vikings and I also thought he is not the best mentor. Cousins wasn't the same with Atlanta, though he did play well at the end of last season. The Achillies injury is tough to return from as a QB, ie: Rogers.
I do think McCarthy could get the most from him and he would be a better option than previously mentioned. But I don't see it happening.

I don't really have any confidence in Omar aggressively adding anything unexpected.

Of the 14 teams who made the playoffs this past year, 12 of them had first round QB's. The only exceptions were Hurts and Purdy.

No argument there. But it's been proven you can have success without a first rounder. Both Hurts and Purdy have made it to the Super Bowl, with Hurts winning a ring. And you can fail miserably with a first rounder. And you can choose a QB in the first without having a losing season. So, given the QB position is the most important one on the entire roster, it would be nice to see the Steelers doing a little better finding Ben's successor than we've seen to date. Especially the plan they've had with cheap, aged vets.

And if you're going to take a swing on a first rounder, you don't pair him with an unproven offensive coordinator who turns out to be the worst in the league.

The Steelers need to draft a QB every year until they find and develop their next Franchise QB. This year doesn't have much in the way of first round talent, but they have 12 picks and should take a flyer on 4th-6th round QB, whether Rodgers comes back or not.

Even if that QB is not going to be 'the one', they can possibly be flipped for low round draft picks.

I guess that means no Tua or CJ Shroud. QBs who are a disaster outside in the cold weather.

I am good with this. :)

I guess you could count Mac Jones for the 49ers, he did win a few games for them in the regular season.

Good idea. Let's wait until the sixth round to draft the next franchise QB since there isn't one worth drafting in the first...:icon e biggrin:

Cowher already had Neil O'Donnell and Bubby Brister on the roster when he took over in 1992, after Steelers went 7-9 in 1991. The '92 draft was one of the best of the decade with Searcy, Kirkland, Steed and Perry.

Steelers could have drafted Chad Pennington in 2000, but Steelers had signed Stewart to a long term contract in 1998. Steelers drafted Burress instead. I remember the old Steelers message board on Sporting News website... and most fans hated the Burress pick, since we drafted Edwards the year before.... and wanted Pennington to replace Stewart. Pennington was a good QB, but nowhere near as good as Roethlisberger.

Also.. Steelers could have drafted The GOAT in 2000, but drafted Tee Martin instead. :lolol:

A big part of the franchise QB drought between Bradshaw and Roethlisberger was due to bad luck and bad judgment. Not drafting Marino, extending Stewart, settling for Brister, O'Donnell, 1st round QB pick Malone being average, etc.

So after saying all that....we still didn't get a franchise QB from Bradshaw till Ben even though we had multiple losing seasons in between the time.

Steelers should have drafted Marino in 1983. And I'll say it a thousand more times. The original Art Rooney agrees with me. :icon mrgreen:

Lots of different Qbs should have been drafted between Bradshaws late carrier, and Ben

Also... last time I checked, Steelers did draft a QB in 2004 after going 6-10 in 2003. I was drinking a lot of beer at the time, but if I recall correctly... things went quite well after that.

So Bradshaw played 9 games in 1982, and one in 1983. I think 22 years was too long. So if you think that was ok, then you won't be upset if we don't get one till about 2040s.

At the time... I thought Neil O'Donnell and Kordell Stewart were capable of winning Super Bowls. Both led their teams to 2 AFC Championships.

    O'Donnell in 1995
    Stewart in 2001

Nobody said anything about top 10. I said we had losing seasons , and didn't get a Qb, and You bring up a CB that didn't get us to a SB, well if that's OK, then I bring up a OLB that's a HOF player, and that should make everything OK.

LoL. Stewart sucks. The team got them to AFC Championship as was proved when they both left the team they sucked. Stewart was so bad they ask our OC why they didn't run certain routes, and he said if we make it to the SB, and Win He would tell , but we got beat by the Broncos. Kordell threw 1 td, and 4 ints that playoff run, and our OC left, and he never told. Also people forget that back then more than one team got a bye week, and you could make it to the AFC Championship with one win in the playoffs

I really thought and believed that we could beat the Patriots in the 2001 season AFC Championship game with Stewart at QB. Patriots were nothing great at that time... got lucky with Tuck Rule, etc. Steelers were more than capable of winning that game. Special Teams penalties and mishaps killed the Steelers. Now beating the Rams in the Super Bowl? That would have been a tall task. Our D was good, but I don't think it could have held the Greatest Show on Turf to under 20 points.
