Since Mel Blount and Rod Woodson, who have been the best two Steeler cornerbacks since then:

    Ike Taylor
    Joe Haden
    Chad Scott
    Dewayne Washington
    Deshea Townsend
    Others?

    You just made me think

J T Thomas sat near me at games and I would see him in the club area

But now I’m thinking I haven’t seen him for a season or two

    Hmm

Corner has never really been a great area of strength. After the two you mentioned there is Ike Taylor, and possibly Joe Haden.

I put Chad Scott and Washinton into the ok to good category for what they were asked to do (play zone in the zone blitz scheme). Townsend was an ok nickel corner imo.

As for the guy you want to line up against the #1 for the other team, i'm only really putting Mel, Rod, or Ike in that category. Haden and Ramsey have been serviceable though.

Agreed he played strong safety mostly.

I guess he should go on the list with Rod as he made the probowl playing corner

William Gay is up there. He was excellent in his second stint at slot CB. JPJ is third on this list IMO. Hard to argue that Taylor, Haden, and JPJ are the best outside corners we've had by a good bit. Nelson was pretty good for us even though he wasn't here long. Seems like he's either a bad dude or bad teammate (or both), but he was a good CB.

only twice the years he played corner. As a left corner he didn't. A few more at safety only.

The conversation starts with Ike and then we can discuss the rest. He couldn't catch a beach ball, but he was an elite cover man who would line up every week against WR1.

Agree that Ike is at the top of this list.

I think Porter is probably next. But in fairness, it's probably too early to tell.

Maybe others (e.g. Hayden) would be higher than Ike if we consider their entire career instead of just their time with the Steelers.

Even still...Hayden is probably still CB2 IMO if we don't count Porter yet.

Porter way too early but I like his trajectory. Hopefully we can lock him up long term. The Steelers for having such a storied history until the last decade or so have had underwhelming corners.

I disagree with the "long storied history (of good CBs is what I assume you mean) until the last decade". Because of the "last decade or so" part.

IMO, we were not good at drafting CBs under Cowher or Tomlin.

Ike is probably the only really good CB we drafted under Cowher (and he didn't really become good until under Tomlin).

And JPJ is probably the only really good CB we drafted under Tomlin.

I think a big part of this is that we have been much more focused on the "rush" part of "rush and coverage go together" equation.
