Long time lurker- infrequent poster. I was there for Pimpdylan (AKA Pimplydan) on steelers.com if that lends me any more credibility.....

I am starting to think Art II was invested in Tomlin and not much else with regards to this team outside of the mandatory spending for the cap. This franchise has not kept up with the really good franchises on the margins. I think the 4 teams in the championship games represent some of the better franchises overall. It was funny to see Seattle fans lament their "down years" on pregame between the Pete Carroll superbowl years and today. Meanwhile we have been living in mediocrity far longer. I believe in order to be successful in this league you need to bring it from every angle. It doesn't guarantee a championship but is more likely to result in periods of success. I make this claim because:

    1. Steelers facilities are consistently ranked at the bottom of the league on player surveys.
    2. I found the hard knocks AFCN series interesting. Baltimore had a dedicated analytics guy advising Harbaugh on recovery. Steelers shots seemed to be an endless stream of Tomlinisms.
    3. Tomlin's lack of coaching tree is well documented. How much of that is an unwillingness to pay for the best coaching staff? I'm not defending Tomlin, I was done after the Jacksonville playoff disaster.
    4. The McCarthy hire reeks of the safe home team discount hire. We always assume Pittsburgh would be the ideal coaching spot because we are fans, but I'm seriously questioning that after this hire.

On a side note, maybe Tomlin did quit out of pride. Maybe he knew the house was cheap, and saw himself as the guy keeping the aging, cheap, poorly constructed thing together. Although I am glad he's gone, I'm starting to think until ownership changes its ways, we may be in for worse.

I think there’s like 10 other threads complaining about these same topics, but we need another one?

I was young for PimplyDan but I remember haha probably one of my earliest recollections of a sports team message board. Either way, appreciate seeing a lurker post.

Hard to argue with much of what you said. Only thing I'd dispute is that we are a good job. We came off a 19 year HC who's never had a losing season. We don't have a QB, but a decent enough roster with good players to build around. This was a pretty good spot... and we still hired in a way that baffled us. This could change, of course, by the next hire depending on how the McCarthy experiment goes. It wont have the same luster if McCarthy fails.

If we could have beat the Texans…I think we could have hung with the Patriots and possibly have won. Texans were just a bad matchup for us.

We beat the Patriots this year…yeah they gave the game to us with the turnovers, but I wasn’t impressed with their QB. He isn’t Mahomes or Allen.

Unfortunately, it was a down year for the AFC this year, it was a missed opportunity this year.

I agree with all points made.

Tomlin may have quit due to non football reasons. Tomlin did not have a PC in any of the drafts shown in the war room ( did he know how to use one ? nor did he write a goodbye to the fans by the Steelers. Something was up.

I understand being upset that the Steelers were -2 in turnover differential in a game they only lost by 3, but I'm still going to push back on the notion that the Jaguars should have been steamrolled.

For that season, they had a good team.
2nd best defense, 5th best offense. #1 rushing offense (in yards/game).
In the Conference game, Bortles was playing as well as Brady (who is a much better QB normally). They were leading with 3 minutes left in the game. If their defense had played even average in NE, instead of poorly, they would have gone to the SB.
(Earlier in the game, the Jaguars had a defensive mix-up that left Gronkowski undefended deep in the middle of the field. Funny how helmet radio and signal mishaps keep happening in the Patriots favor when they play at home.)

i think we saw a hire of a guy that baffled them with BS. he was handed a super bowl caliber team and kept it just barely above water. the front office was stale as well. colbert wasn't as good as he thought. tomlin wasn't as good as he thought. i said way back that this grouping together were going to not be good. they weren't. the franchise's quality may have been the one thing keeping our head just above the surface. so, i think you may have this backwards.

no i don't think art2 is the best we have had either but as it trickled down it got worse for the overall development of this team. they were mediocre and we pretty much stayed that way through these last 15 or so years after the cowher era.

i didn't think it was that great either until they overrode cowher and did pick ben. cowher could build a defense but again too one sided.

time to move forward and maybe get back to prominence. it is possible.
