During his time in GB they were mostly in the middle on penalties so it's not clear what the true issue was.

Major problem in Dallas was the pre snap penalties

This was certainly my first reaction (and I think it's correct).

The post you replied to here was kind of my attempt at trying to convince myself that this isn't a terrible hire.

I'm generally a "the team knows better than me" kind of guy. The only other decision they've made that I really remember hating was drafting PF over Humphrey.

I really don't like this decision though.

I was hoping to see some change and some level of rebuild. But I think this signals more treading water. And my guess is that McCarthy will be worse at it than Tomlin.

If there's a funny part here...it's the Tomlin haters wishing on the Monkey Paw. (1) We want Tomlin gone! (2) We want an offensive minded head coach! Wonder what the 3rd wish is.

At this point, I'm mostly hoping that we can find our next LeBeau type at DC.

Hated it initially but now I realize this hire is strictly about the QB position. The task at hand for McCarthy is now to find a QB and develop him. It could be Howard.

I like this hire personally. The way I look at it is I love that’s he’s got ties to Pittsburgh and he’s been successful and produced winning teams only having 4 losing seasons in 18 years. Mike has a winning playoff record record and a playoff win more recently that Tomlin and that’s with a couple years away from coaching. He had a coaching tree which says something and he might be able to pull from that. Being a little older doesn’t bother me either because I think the Rooney’s are thinking long term. Long term in the sense Mike can get us competitive quickly and bring in good enough assistants to find that next long term coach to follow in Noll, cowher and Tomlins footsteps of long sustained winning and more playoff wins. I think we’re going to be surprised in the end how this works out. It’s setting the table for more Lombardis and not getting blown away in the playoffs every year. I’m excitedly patient to see how it all plays out. Go Steelers!!!

This hire is about Art being in his 70s and not wanting to rebuild with a first time HC, so he chose an older experienced offensive guy who might be able to win right away.

I'm not arguing this topic again if you don't think Ben was a game manager early in his career then I don't know what to tell you.

    This
Don’t understand how you call a coach great
A coach that didn’t win a playoff game in 10yrs
    Make it make sense
And the Rooney running the show now shares a great deal of the responsibility

Cowher was a huge part of the development of Ben when he hired Whiz and Arians in his staff... I don't think Arians would have been our OC under Tomlin if Cowher hadn't hired him

Only in the second half when they had the lead....The steelers had the best offense in the first quarter in 2004 and 2005 in points(7.6 points in 2004 and 5.8 points in the first quarter in 2005)both first in the nfl.Tomlin don't care winning the first quarter

While the Steelers have a history of hiring long-term young coaches, I don't see McCarthy as a long-term solution. He may very well be a 10 year HC, but only time will tell. I do like the idea he is familiar with Steeler tradition. He may bring that back. My guess is he will bring in other high-profile coaches that Tomlin did not seem to attract. Let's be honest, the cupboards are bare and need restocked. While winning right now would be fantastic, I would rather rebuild than experience more mediocrity. As frustrating and disappointing as a losing season will be, the last losing season brought us Big Ben. I will not be surprised if a few high-profile trades are in store for us by shipping a few players out for that rebuild. Again, no one knows what will be in store for us. I am nervous and excited.

Win what exactly? Steelers ain't winning a SB anytime soon.

But I agree with your sentiment: to the loser owner "win right away" means to continue the non-losing streak, and maybe fluke-ing into the playoffs.

If the owner actually believes Steelers have a window for SB wins in the next few years, he's as dumb as AB and Bell.
