Judge Mike McCatrty not by his size or age. We know he is large and slightly past his football coaching prime, but the fact that he had a meddlesome owner as the acting GM and went 12-5, three years in a row is telling. Only a very good head coach could do this.

While MM was not my first pick for the open head coaching job for the Steelers, this man who grew up a steeler fan is coming home to lead the Steelers.

His first order of business is to find a DC better than Austin, which should be easy.

My issue with the hire is the length of the contact.

Poor Buckeyes, they have bought so many players that it don't matter if they have an OC.

This pretty much is my thought. McCarthy is a short-term option.

It sounds like he presented a plan to Rooney that would mentor youth at QB while still putting a hat in the ring for superbowl aspirations.

    Rooney doesn't want to 'rebuild'.

I neither love nor hate the hire at this time.

I think it will not be terrible and possibly work out ok. I have respected and trusted the Rooneys however, which is part of why I am a Steeler fan.

Because maybe one of the other interviews would have made them feel you know what, this is the guy.

    Short term?

They gave him 5 years, there's nothing short term about this, except Art's memory loss...

I kinda agree. I feel like this decision came down to a few possible points:

    - Perhaps Tomlins decision did catch him by surprise. This feels like "I don't know what to do right now, lets hire someone safe."

    - Maybe they didn't see "their guy" during this cycle. Or the guys that were intriguing to them weren't quite ready yet. So, I'll pick a guy I feel I can trust to steward my franchise, if only for a short time. He can steer the ship till our guy is ready. He's not going to hesitate to let McCarthy go when his guy is available.

-Maybe Rooney decided that going with an offensive HC might be in his best interest. Most of the names being thrown around were defensive guys in this cycle. Maybe he thought Scheelhaase wasn't ready yet, but to not even virtually interview Kubiak, I don't get that.

They did see their guy, Mike Mcarthy from the get go, everything else was for show, they didn't even wait for Shula. This is what they all wanted, the threed headed clown show - Flanders, Khan and Weidl.

What’s wrong with the length of the contract? The Steeelers are a long way off to being a SB contender. They don’t have the talent at key positions, especially QB, and are too old in others. It will take time, especially when they will not have top draft picks in round 1.

They're very far to be a super bowl contender at this pace but Rooney is completely disconnected with the reality like crazy because the Steelers make in the playoffs, even though they're the worst or second-worst playoff team every year, and everyone wants to play against them.

5 years is a long time. I would give Mike M only 4 years to turn our ship around.

Why give him five years? If he is the playoff answer, extend the man as needed.

I wih Mike M was 10 years younger. But he is a good head coach. That much is proven.

Art doesn't think so, that's why he hired Tomlin 2.

I haven't really read through this thread but I feel like a majority of folks don't like this hire.

It is a safe hire, that's for certain.
On the positive side, Mike McCarthy is very good at offense. The inside scoop is that he has spend the year off refining that.
Also on the positive side, he doesn't mess with his coordinators a lot. They are hired to do a job.
Yes, they still work together to plot the game.

    On the bad side.
I don't really want to depend on a 43-year old QB. Rogers did well and we squandered his talents in not having 'the guy' on the roster who replaces him.
Rogers could be my #2 guy if he wants to, because he is very good for a player level coach. But my rather would be Howard and 2 new QB's.

This is not an exciting hire by any means, just a safe hire in my opinion.

I wonder how much of this is that they didn't like the young guys they did zoom interviews with.

At the beginning of the coaching carousel, it sounded like this wasn't going to be a great year to hire a coach with kind of just OK candidates.

Then there were 1,000,000 openings. A couple with marquee QBs.

Maybe we just didn't like the guys we interviewed.

And Art's probably close to the end of his time running the team. So he opted for a short term tread water guy. Who has at least some experience working with good QBs...I don't know that anyone really "develops" QBs in the NFL.

Then, whoever takes over from Art can have a blank slate to pick from at HC. And that new longer term guy won't have to live in the shadow of "we've only hired 3 coaches in the last 3 generations. All of them won SBs. Two are in the hall. And the 3rd will probably get there too.".

Now, that new guy will come in from McCarthy. Who probably gets to the playoffs at least once. But doesn't really do much (unless we get blessed with a great QB in the draft).

They will never let him coach in a lame duck year anyways, so he is really only here for 4 if he is struggling.

They will always be that way until they find a franchise QB, it begins and ends with that position. It doesn’t matter how good the rest of the team is or who the coach is.

This screams of being the 'safe hire'. Known HC, known background, known record. We have plenty of evidence that ArtII is not a risk taker. With any of the other possibilities there is a range of risk. I don't think it's in Rooney's DNA to take that risk. Five years puts ArtII at 77 yrs old and time for retirement. The safe hire puts the team in good hands for DanII. Gotta hope that he will be more aggressive in setting his own legacy.
